Yet, a lot of cool catchy analogies that serve your understanding: "The primary challenges of emergence are not concerned with relating the effective to the fundamental. This connection was even short-circuited in physics with Gibbs’s revolutionary effective theory of thermodynamics; the most powerful and practical theory of thermodynamics to date. It is an approach to statistical physics that was supported by Maxwell’s demonstration that inter-theoretic reduction (from probability distributions to classical trajectories) is almost always impossible (logically and computationally). Greater attention is paid to inter-theoretic compatibility: Gibbs does not contradict Newton but cannot be derived from him. Life does not contradict quantum mechanics but cannot be derived from it. The pursuit of emergent descriptions is more often concerned with compatibility."...more

The interaction between our genotype and phenotype via nature is one of the biggest mysteries that we should unravel. It can hold a legitimate move forward towards health, but it can also allow us to reimagine society in a more just lens. Great great great book!...more

Obviously forgiveness towards our parents, but most importantly forgiveness of the self. Michelle is struggling with this heavy emotion because there's a gap of who she is and who she wants to be. This gap is highlighted and emphasized with her mother's diagnosis. And to remedy this gap, the book takes us on a beautiful journey of self-discovery. A discovery where she learns what it's like to be Michelle who is a Korean, a musician, and most importantly a loving daughter.
Speaking of, this book is also about love. Once she opened herself to love, her life starts giving back so much. Once she accepts how much she loves her mom, loves her culture, loves her food, all the music and art and success came flowing easily after. As if, it was the writer's block to their maximum potential. Once she tapped into that big emotion, she started getting closer to who she wants to be.
I could not flip a page without tearing up, highly recommend this book!
Last point: I think our character might be doing the same mistake with her dad all over again. I finished the book missing my mom a lot, but also opened my eyes that maybe I'm also misunderstanding my father all along too. ...more

The thoughts, skepticism, contradictions and deep desire for this surrender to 'Nature' is so deeply rooted in my way of thinking that I thought this book to be very warm.
It was a great read in a much needed time to remember the biggest lesson of it all: to be present in the current moment. The cure of anxious thoughts and remedy of an emotional state. I definitely will be reading it again and again....more

The name stuck in my head and between picking a Kafka book and Go Tell It on the Mountain in the overpriced Barnes and Noble, I decided to give him a chance.
I started out hating the book. Overly descriptive without a true progression of the plot and figured I might be in for a dreamy piece. But like any true best friend, you start as enemies before you truly accept who they are. And that's how I felt about James Baldwin. What a creative balance between social commentary and personal character development that truly seemed to be the opposite of a contrived emotion. As if we're truly experiencing Gabriel and Ray and all the characters without any implicit or subtle judgement about them. An achievement that seems impossible when writing such a personal piece. An achievement that I slowly try to implement in my life and my writing.
I tried to keep this review as spoiler-free as possible because I'm sending it to a friend :) much more to say about this great book. However, if you're looking for a fresh perspective about writing, pick up this book as soon as you can. I understand all the hype around James Baldwin now....more
