I was unsurprised to see the author name check Mo Xiang Tong Xiu in the acknowledgements. I picked it up because the blurb gave me Scum Villain vibes, and reading further The Emperor seemed very Yiling Laozu at first description. Still, Brennan goes in an entirely original direction and the comedic timing is on beat. I highly recommend it for fantasy readers looking for something light. ...more

Expansive, dark, comforting, and deeply personal all at once, this book has so many characters traveling across the empty country after a civilization ending disease that it should be hard to follow. It isn't. Each character is unique and real, sketched out in King's typical style. Even the people on the side of Satan - cannibals, murderers, greedy capitalists, and pyromaniacs all - feel like people. Their motivations are sympathetic, even as they make terrible, terrible choices.
The blatant religiosity of the book never feels preachy because it's always so direct. Naturally the references and allusions that those familiar with the religion are likely to pick up on add a layer of meaning, but the novel doesn't read as an attempt to sell the religion any more than Percy Jackson is trying to convince children that the Greek Gods are real. It's a novel, and it's as entertaining as the rest of King's work.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in horror or long post apocalyptic travels through broken down, unpopulated bits of Americana. ...more
