Like I love a crazy twist but this was boring and insane but also, not shocking. Like yeah; this whole story has been meh and insane so why not make the plot twist the same way. I felt it crawl under my skin and put its clammy, gross hands around my heart. Credit where credit is due though because the ability to write in such a claustrophobia-inducing way is, I guess, a talent. A terrifying one but a talent none the less.
Like, have we checked on Will Dean, is he ok? Reading this was so disturbing, I can’t even imagine having this story swirl around in your head and then write it down bringing it to life.
The first 1/3 of the book, it was a bit repetitive, mundane even. But that was Jane’s life wasn’t it. Repetitive hell. And then it all kicks up a notch and I felt physically sick at how trapped Jane felt in the unfolding of chaos.
All of the trigger warnings. Torture. Rape. Human trafficking. Child abuse.

And the fact it was an audiobook, ugh, it was perfect to listening to doing housework on a moody, foggy Southland afternoon. You know what freaked me out the most? HG Wells studied biology at uni, was part of occultic secret societies AND is rumoured to be the author of the article in issue 2047 of the Saturday review titled “the limits of individual plasticity which basically is this book but as a REAL scientific study.
Like UGH that gives me the heebie jeebies, was this book just like a low key confession? Maybe not, but what if it is. Makes it all the more terrifying.

Especially reading it in todays current societal climate - incels and misogyny is a hot topic - it was, for lack of a better term, “modern and up-to-date without being preachy and “screw the patriarchy vibes.
