The story is about the recent civil war in Cygnar and the quest for the throne . On the one side is King Leto , his evil brother Vinter , the former King of Cygnar and his bastard son Julius . This kind of story should have been a fun read but Douglas Seacat just couldn't seem to get it altogether . The first half of the book seems like a selection of short stories that were thrown together to fill space . It was disappointing to say the least , because Cygnar is my favorite faction to play , so this normally would have given him a lot of slack . What should have been a story filled with court intrigue was instead a bunch of baffling episodes that finally lead to mass battle . A battle that seemed to be thrown together at the last minute with very little regard for tactics . Honestly the fluff in the rulebooks for the game are better written and had this been a collection of passages in the book rulebook , would not have surprised me . I don't know if Douglas Seacat has written any other books , if he hasn't then hopefully his next attempt will be better . While this book was horrible , it certainly was not very good . Which is a shame considering how important an event this was in the game world ....more
This is the third in the Ack Ack Macaque series and it is as awesome as the last two . I cannot recommend this one enough . Gareth Powell makes a world where a cigar smoking monkey is the main character so much fun . The team of heroes faces its most daunting task yet and I kept expecting the dreaded third act curse but no such thing . The story was amazing the action non stop and everything about the book shined with an out of this world flavor that could not be beat . Gareth Powell created a world that I cannot wait to revisit . If there were a way for me to become a member of ACK ACK'S crew I would , but alas I guess I will just have to wait for more adventures of my favorite Cigar smoking one eyed monkey . ...more
This book has become one of my favorite reads , I have read it twice already and I plan on doing so again . I saw this book in Barnes and Noble and I noticed 2 things , first its about one of my favorite characters, Sherlock Holmes 's brother Mycroft and second its written by Karreem Abdul Jabbar . Yes that Karrem Abdul Jabbar , the legendary basketball player that many of us watched when we were kids . I will admit to being more than a little curious to see what this book was going to be like . I was amazed at how good this book was ! The character of Mycroft was written as well as if he had been written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle . Which I hope is considered to be very high praise and hopefully the author does as well . For fans of Sherlock Holmes this book is a wonderful addition to the canon and for lovers of good books this is an amazing read .The best part is you do not need to be familiar with the character of Sherlock Holmes to enjoy it . I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone fan or not . ...more

Recipe for a rip roaring peice of sci , first add a strong likeable female lead . Then toss in an evil , shadowy gang of bad guys and toss in flavors of a sci fi old western flavor , put in the hands of very talented writer and Voila! An awesome sci fi story set in the near future.Take my advice and read this one soon....more
I love the old west , so any book about it I read ,most of the time I am rewarded with a great read. Unfortunately this one is not the case most of the chapters are little more than Wikipedia entries. The Battle of Little Bighorn was the worst example and the life of Kit Carson . Both subjects are worthy of much better treatment Maybe next time the author will take a little more time to devote to his subjects til then you can pass on this one....more
