In the following years, Annie has turned to her Aunt Sam and Uncle Clarke as her source of family and her next-door best friend Georgette as her confidant. The present that her father had left her inspired her to pursue a career with the Navy as a pilot and Annie is at the top of her class. The only person better that her is her soon-to-be ex-husband Brad, who still has hope that her can change Annie's mind about divorcing him.
In an effort to take a few days off for R&R, Annie returns to Pilgram's Rest for her 26th birthday, hoping to just relax and enjoy the peace and quite of North Carolina. But her father, Jack, has other plans. Always the con-man, Jack calls claiming he is dying and needs to see Annie in St. Louis. Her orderly life gets turned upside down when she attempts to meet up with the man who abandoned her but holds a secret that she desperately wants to know - who is her real mother.
