But this book is not 2.5 stars The concept for this book is so unique and fun, a prince of Christmas with a prince of Halloween? It sounds incredible. But this book is not exactly the fun festive rom com it markets itself as. This book almost read like fantasy at times with all the holiday 'politics' and the negotiations between the different holidays. It kind of bored me to tears at times, I'm not a big fantasy reader and I could care less about all the politics between the holidays. The romance in this book was just okay, I think this book would've been better if we had a dual POV instead of only getting Coal's POV.

I really liked the nostalgic feel to the writing, since it takes place in New Orleans in 1995, and I loved the group of friends we were following. I also loved the intrigue of the vampires. Maybe I enjoyed this so much right now because I'm currently watching The Vampire Diaries for the first time and I'm absolutely obsessing over it, and so much of this book did remind me of the show in a lot of ways. Critically speaking, this book definitely has some flaws. I really wish the characters were fleshed out more, they all felt kind of one dimensional and I wanted sooooooo much more from the romance. Jared was such a boring love interest and the romance was not interesting at all, but I know these things could be improved upon in the series. I just had a really fun time reading this book, it was exactly what I was in the mood for.

I haWow, ahhhh, this is my favorite book I've read so far in 2025. I LOVED THIS. I am shocked that this YA book just completely knocked my socks off. I haven't had this feeling with a YA book since I read We are the Ants and A Monster Calls. I ADORE these two in this book, the romance is such a slow burn and it's so freaking SWEET. I love the WRITING, oh my gosh the prose is some of the most beautiful sh*t I've ever read in my life and it was so atmospheric and stunning, and I annotated and highlighted an insane amount in this book. And also, the ASEXUAL REP in this book was absolutely everything oh my gosh. I'm asexual, and it's so rare to have this rep in books, and I just really appreciated that about this book. I can't wait to reread this book, I might try to reread it soon.
Also, random side note, but the character Thomas, I swear he's giving Klaus Mikaelson vibes and since this was the first book I read after finishing my first ever watch of The Originals, it made me love this book even more. Klaus is my favorite character in the TVDU and Thomas is sooooo giving Klaus vibes in this book if he was a young queer teen and I'm absolutely living for it.

I don't often read cozy fantasy horror, but it was really the romance in this book that sold me. I adored Shesheshen and Homily soooooo much. I also thought the writing was so good, it was so gorgeously written, packed with great quotes. The horror also definitely delivered too, this book was so gory and some scenes were so hard to read -- but the character development was incredible, I got so attached to them.

I was a big fan of this authors debut novel when I read it a few years ago, and I鈥檝e been in my self-proclaimed *vampire era* in this last year and I thought I was going to love this! But I just didn鈥檛 connect with it the way I was hoping to. I LOVED the beginning, I was convinced it would be a new favorite, but I found so much of this story to be so boring, and I didn鈥檛 really feel any chemistry with the romance. I love the concept of this book, I love the idea of vampires that are written about in a popular book series being real, but the execution of this story wasn鈥檛 my favorite.
I also didn鈥檛 like that the tone felt all over the place, at times it was so serious when talking about our protagonist鈥檚 past, she is a survivor of sexual assault and it gets brought up constantly anytime she has any romantic scenes, but then in the next scene the tone of the book feels more silly and campy and kind of cheesy? It just didn鈥檛 really work for me. Some scenes kind of read like fanfiction for other vampire franchises, and some of the mixed media elements of this book got annoying after a while. I don鈥檛 think this book needs to be 400 pages long, it really started to drag after a while. ...more

A light magical realism type of story where a different husband comes down from the attic every time, he goes up there? I love anything related to the idea of alternate universes and parallel realities and all that fun stuff, so I couldn't wait. There were some things I really loved about this, it was way more lighthearted and sillier than I was expecting, but overall, the tone really worked for me. I think this concept was so fun and interesting.
I think my biggest critiques though are that the book started to get a little repetitive after a while. And even after spending 350 pages with the main character I still don't really feel like I know anything about her. I guess I just wish the characters were more fleshed out in this. It sucks to only give this 3 stars because this is a 5 star concept for me, but the execution of the story wasn't my favorite -- but this idea had so much potential!!!
I'd still recommend if you want something that is easy to read, and something that is a little silly but still interesting. ...more

The woman working there gives her 10 days to go back to reality, and find this man, and along the way she discovers all the things in her life that she took for granted. I loved the small-town vibes as you follow this character who is opening a coffee shop in a town that doesn't even really know what coffee is. The characters were so wholesome (especially Thimble, what a sweet little bean) and there was something so cozy and comforting about this book. It was like the feeling I get while playing a video game or something, I'm not sure how to describe it, but it was kind of wonderful and unexpected and perfect for this time of year. And DAMN this book made me crave coffee on every page hahaha.

I enjoyed the dragons way more than I was expecting to, but I wasn't a huge fan of the characters or the romance in this book. I thought I'd be into the romance because I'm a big romance reader, but this read so cliche and both Violet and Xaden kind of drove me nuts haha. The dragons were definitely the coolest part of this book to me, which is shocking to say because I thought it would be my least favorite aspect of the book. I don't plan to continue in this series.

It's a bit out of my comfort zone with being a fantasy / gothic horror / romance, it's not my typical read. Sometimes I absolutely LOVED the writing and it felt so atmospheric, but then sometimes I felt like the pacing dragged quite a bit (especially with the use of all the footnotes, which I didn't find necessary). I think the design of this book is so aesthetically pleasing and they really went all out with the little details (like the borders around the pages and the indented margins on the chapter title pages), but unfortunately the story itself was a little disappointing for me. I feel like this book could've been better if it leaned more into the horror or the fantasy genre, instead it just kind of straddled both the entire story and I feel like the horror elements were never strong enough to keep my interest throughout the story.

This is such This book is one of my top favorites that I've read this year. I was completely floored by how much I loved this; I wasn't expecting it. This is such a unique and original story about a married couple who finds out that Louis (the husband) is slowly turning into a great white shark. It sounds ridiculous, but this book is actually very serious in tone, and so sad! It was written so gorgeously, some of my favorite writing I've read all year. Even though the chapters are incredibly short, and you can easily read this book in one afternoon, it's left such a lasting impression on me. These characters felt so real, and their connection was so genuine and beautiful to read! I feel like this book can be a huge metaphor for grief and change and loss and how the people we love can become people we don't recognize anymore and how heartbreaking that is. I was also just FASCINATED by the concept in this universe where people can mutate into animals.
Here's an example of a quote I loved: "He was an aimless kite in search of a string to ground him to the world. But instead, he found Wren, a great strong wind who supported his exploration of the sky." like... ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? So beautiful.

The book is mainly about a woman who is tracking down a book about sex magic, and at first I was like.... wtf is this haha but then it got so interesting and honestly kind of sad as we learn more about our protagonist, I just instantly felt connected with her and her story. I feel like this book does hit a point around 150 pages in where the story gets soooo repetitive and I was just waiting for things to pick back up for a good 50-100 pages which is why it doesn't feel right giving it a full five stars because I got very bored in the middle at some parts of this. But that ENDING!!!!! The ending was everything and more and I love it, I'm obsessed. This book is one of those strange, weird magical type of books that'll stay on my mind for some time.
