First Impressions: Here's the thing, there are like a thousand things I did not understand. I have a couple of complaints, I hated the romance (though it is a relative minor plot point). I have no idea how the magic system works (I get the basic idea, but apparently there's so much complexity that the main character studies and yet I feel like nothing was explained), the epilogue though expected (a lot of hints were set up before) still left me so confused and I (view spoiler)[ lost my favorite character (hide spoiler)]. AND YET, I still had the best time reading this book. So much so that I'm already planning a re-read later this year to be ready for book two.
It was just so good, and fresh, and it was not afraid to be violent, sad or unfair. I also really fell for some friendships here, and in between a great plot and pacing full with intrigues, a competition, secrets and survival, there was such a strong work making the characters genuine and distinct and just overall interesting. I truly liked this book, I loved the academy setting, the competition, and all the reveals along the way that disrupt Vis's choices and paths. It's one of the strongest first entries in a series/trilogy(?), and I can't wait to keep reading and unveil all those mysteries....more

I enjoyed all these stories (okay mostly, Gods of Risk is the exception) and I so loooooove a couple of them (Strange Dogs and The Vital Abyss). But overall, I found these novellas and short stories essential reading in The Expanse. This book opens up the world/universe, it gives more depth to so many characters and places. I think Ty and Daniel quickly found their footing when writing shorter stories so whenever it was time to read a new novella before a full novel, it was just such a joy to discover a new piece of the puzzle in this universe. I'm gonna miss all these characters (except for David Draper, worst character in the whole series.)
