okay okay okay, hear me out, back in the day i was obsessed with vampire academy. Ii recognize in 2025 that series had a lot of problems, but i was yookay okay okay, hear me out, back in the day i was obsessed with vampire academy. Ii recognize in 2025 that series had a lot of problems, but i was young and in love with adrian lol. i also grew up reading house of night, which i didn’t even love back then, but i still read the newest book every halloween! but that's what reading zodiac academy feels like - you can see all the problems, but you’re also flying through the past, giggling at the cringe, and having a good time.
this paranormal academic fantasy romance stars two twin sisters who have had a pretty rough life, only ever able to rely on one another. and this book starts out with them finding out that they are actually fae and were swapped with human children when they were babies because their lives were in danger! well, this book actually starts out when breaking and entering but they are quickly swept away to the mirror world of faerie where they must graduate from zodiac academy so they can get the inheritance that their parents left them.
oh, and their parents used to be the ruler of the fae but since their murder, four heirs, who are also attending this school, are the ones who are supposed to come together and rule upon graduating. and now they are very unhappy that this could impact them sitting the throne together. obviously this school is called zodiac academy, so the star signs play a huge role in this story. including the four heirs being from the four different elements. oh, and our main characters, darcy and tory, are geminis, but i bet you guessed that lol.
but if you’re fae, you also have an order, which is essentially a paranormal entity that you can shift into well.. or be a vampire. let me also say, the vampire is the earth sign in this story and he just goes around assault biting people. i mean, this book says it’s a bully romance, so i do want to cut it a little slack, but that’s the biggest issue with this story - the magical compulsion and how it doesn’t feel good to read about. The other very big issue is the character diego, who i do not think is being written in a respectful way.
but besides those two things (and i’m not saying those are two huge things that she discussed) i did have fun reading this. maybe its because 2025 has been the year of such disappointing romances for me that the bar might truly be in heck, but i never wanted to stop swiping those pages. this is compulsively readable and i am actually excited to start the next book.
the only other thing i want to ask is how is there not a virgo character! i don’t want to be too loud with this question because, again, the taurus is assault biting people, and you can just tell these authors don’t love capricorns because of all the strays they were actually catching in this first book, but i am manifesting a virgo character to come into this and make it an even better story.
“The answers you seek are hidden between Leo and Libra
if you’ve made it this far, i will tell you the reason i picked this up is because my mom really liked it. now, me and her have very different tastes, especially in romance, but she is the reason i grew up reading all the paranormal romances, and i love being able to talk about a new series with her. and i promised her i would at least read the first three books! (so maybe a little bit of bias went into this experience, but i also read quicksilver because of her and you all know how that went so)
trigger + content warnings: poverty, abandonment, bad foster system experiences, cops, magical compulsion, extreme bullying, assault, loss of parents in past, a lot of drug references, drinking, talk of food and weight, unwanted pictures being taken and posted also involving nudity, one harry potter reference, weird teacher behavior (the tarot proff), student and professor flirting (not the tarot proff), unhealthy power dynamics, talk of car accident in past, talk of drowning in past, public humiliation, a bad joke about polyamory, cheating, attempted murder, actual murder
this is my favorite read by this author yet! I truly had a really good time with this. the basic premise (depicted with this 11/10 book cover) is thatthis is my favorite read by this author yet! I truly had a really good time with this. the basic premise (depicted with this 11/10 book cover) is that our mc is fleeing from domestic abuse, and makes a deal with a demon for seven years of consensual service, in a different realm, where she will be auctioned off to a partner who is looking for a human partner. and she is quickly secured by a dragon lord who is in need of a human life to make his land, maybe on the brink of war, more secure. and i highkey loved the setting of our love interest’s land/kingdom? like, give me a full story set here, i am begging! but what i also really loved about this was just the themes of reclaiming all the things - sex, boundaries, trust, your safety, your pleasure, and yourself in general. it was really beautiful, and i promise this is the highest of three stars, and i really recommend!
(may have spoilers for your reading experience, so please use caution/only read if you need tw/cws): domestic abuse (historical, off-page, but the heroine is dealing with the aftermath of getting out of that relationship), murder (off-page), human/non-human sex, size difference, explicit sex, breeding, pregnancy (epilogue)
additional trigger + content warnings i found while reading: anxiety, panic attack symptoms, mention of blood, mention of loss of parents in past, talk/fear or war, nightmares, self harm to get blood for a spell
“I have hungered for you in ways you cannot comprehend. I've craved you. More than my sin. You haunt me.
you all know i keep reading these books because they are truly so much fun, but they are just never perfect reads for me. and also let me remind you that i have praised each book in this world for the amazing twists and turns! so imagine my surprise when i thought this was going to be a five star, because i loved these characters and circle of hell so much, only to be delivered the most nonsensical twist ever. and maybe that’s my bad, for hyping and awaiting what i was really sure would be a mind blowing reveal only for foolishness.
so in this new spinoff series, we follow a new prince and get to see his hell domain (my jjk biased fingers wanting to type expansion) - and this one follows gluttony, who i truly ended up falling in love with. this story is also a loose cinderella reimagining, where our other mc, adriana, is just trying to make life more bearable for her and her stepsister, while working as a journalist, reporting things that others might not want her reporting. you know, like how ice dragons are attacking and our prince is trying to keep it undercover while he figures out what is going on. So gluttony (aka: gabrielle), assigns adriana to report on his own fantasy love island competition to find a suitor to help him rule his circle of hell. yet, both of them can’t seem to exactly remember things that took place in the past, and you as the reader are trying to piece things together alongside them.
i adored both characters, and their banter was truly 11/10. i loved the setting, and i am always going to eat up a dating competition side story. i actually enjoyed the sex scenes in this, and for the most part didn’t find anything too cringe like i did with book two! and this even has a very adorable baby dragon! truly, the only other negative thing i can say, aside from the twist in this being outlandish, is that you can just tell that this author is a fan of bridgerton, and at times i felt like i was reading from a blue haired lady whistledown. but truly, i had a really good time with this and i am excited for what (and who) comes next!
trigger + content warnings: debt, talk of money problems, abusive home, loss of father in past, grief, battle, blood, drawing blood to do a blood oath, violence, unwanted sexual advances, drinking, magical memory violations

jjk has been taking over my manga life this year, so i have been slacking with yona! but it was truly so nice to be back in this world with yona and hak! So far, yona has found, and is traveling with, all of the dragons except the yellow dragon - and no one really knows where to look for them! but soon their paths cross, very unexpectedly. (and maybe a little too conveniently for me hehe!)
but we also get to see a lot of suwon in this volume, and what kind of king he is trying to be. and i was actually in love with the part of the story where he was doing a mock battle with some lords from the village he was visiting. we are always going to love a ruler supporting women’s business, too lol!
ahhh, i am very excited to see him and yona’s journeys to become the people they want to become. and i am counting the volumes until their paths meet again (which i am hoping is very soon)! but in the meantime, having hak teaching yona sword fighting is going to be my new roman empire for sure.
trigger + content warnings: hunting (deer), mention of captivity and torture in past, mention of human trafficking, violence, inappropriate + unwanted sexual jokes
listen, i know this is not the best story in the whole entire world, but you cannot deny the impact that we ar1.) Fourth Wing ★★★★ 2.) Iron Flame ★★★★
listen, i know this is not the best story in the whole entire world, but you cannot deny the impact that we are seeing each new release in this series. from breaking first week records that we haven't seen in twenty years, to every barnes i follow on insta having a midnight release party, to the sheer buzz and excitement of theories on all social media platforms being so beloved by at least my algorithm - this series is different and it makes the reading experience so much more fun for me. i have said this for years, but that feeling of awaiting that highly anticipated book to hit your kindle, while you feel like you are buddy reading it with the rest of the book community? that feeling is unmatched to me, and i know it biases my enjoyment of the story, but that’s okay! And upon finishing this last insane chapter, after all those pov shifts, i had such a good time while reading this and i absolutely cannot wait for the next book and all the hype and excitement all over again!
okay, let me actually try to write a semblance of a mini review, but i promise more gushing in the last paragraph. onyx storm picks up right where iron flame left off, with all the characters dealing with the ramifications of that last very serious battle. some are harboring secrets from the others, some are discovering that they may have another magical signet, but all of them need a lot more clues if they wish to someday live in a world that feels more stable and safe. and this story actually goes in a questing way, where we see violet and most of the gang going from place to place to try to decipher some clues and maybe get some answers on how to fix multiple problems. (listen, i am trying to be vague!) but a venin with hair much like violet’s is making everything even more difficult, on top of xaden’s dreams that seem to be getting more and more intense, and it really gives you a setting of a perfect storm brewing more and more every chapter.
as always, the dragons are the best part of this book. i cried at two parts of this book. 1.) over andarna and 2.) over xaden and how he was reacting to sgaeyl. that’s my baby and that’s mother. tairn is also always perfect, and i fear i am for sure shedding tears over him soon. but i truly think the voices of these dragons are just perfect, i love the mystery that is surrounding them, and the whole storyline that is added in this third installment about the dragons was for sure the highlight of this entire series so far!
the only negative things i will say is that a character death did put me in a bad mood haha, but i also know i can just be a little sensitive about that. and that i feel like rebecca didn’t do the best job at recapping all the events from the previous books, which i know i could have fixed with rereading, but i highkey was very confused as to who was who with all the side characters at the start of this. but i was flipping to the front and remembering whose dragon was whose with speed!
let me do a little quick section on theories and theorycrafting - this section will have spoilers, so please do not read if you have not read onxy storm! first, i think we got rhiannon and imogen’s povs before xaden’s because rebecca wanted us to feel really disoriented figuring out what just happened. i think the biggest one is who is “brother and i think the only ones, out of the four missing riders, that is could be are garrick and bohdi, but if i had to put my money on one i would guess bohdi. aaric, who is my favorite side character, and knowing his signet now does have me scared for his life, but i think he is missing because he and my second favorite side character, ridoc, are giving the dragon eggs in exchange for help. andarna and learning more about the irids was the highlight of this book for me, just because i think this is where we are starting to see the main story really start to take place. i think the connection of them channeling from the sky and the venin channeling from the ground is a huge symbolism dot that is going to be further explored. dain and sloane are crazy but that ship is sailing, and even i let out a breath i didn’t know i was holding after he said “eyes here (im in a cursed “look at me dramione brain rot right now, too, so forgive me.) but yeah, dain is for sure more powerful than we, as the readers, know and that siphoning scene was intense. speaking of, if mira would have died, i would have stopped reading so praise bless. and lastly, i saw the most unhinged theory of what if the marriage isn’t to xaden but to bohdi. the gasp i am still gasping even while just typing this lol. i would hate to see it, but i also would love to see it. i am just so obsessed with the six gods, and the six countering powers, and the six different colors of dragons - i feel like my mind is constantly spinning with new theory after new theory.
okay friends, i think that’s everything! this ended up being longer than i intended, but i hope you enjoyed! again, the whole atmosphere surrounding the hype for this book is just a happy place that i like being in, and then you add theorycrafting to it, and i just start foaming at the mouth. but i really did have a good time reading this, and i cannot wait for what is to come!
content warnings at the start of the book: onyx storm is a nonstop-thrilling adventure fantasy set in the brutal and competitive world of a military college for dragon riders, which includes elements regarding war, hand-to-hand combat, blood, intense violence, brutal injuries, gore, murder, death, animal death, injury rehabilitation, grief, poisoning, burning, perilous situations, graphic language, and sexual activities that are shown on the page. readers who may be sensitive to these elements, please take note, and prepare to face the storm
additional trigger + content warnings i found while reading (please use caution because of potential spoilers): a lot of talk of loss of a parent in past, talk of self sacrificing, mention of cheating in past (not the mcs), panic attacks, illness, vomiting, and death of a queer character
“I am glad, glad that you are alive. To see you take breath puts the breath back in my lungs. If there must be another my fate is twined around, I am glad it is you.
this third and final book in fitz’s first trilogy was just everything to me. you all know i love a quest storyline, and as the title does hint at, there are a lot of quests for my favorite assassin in this concluding novel. truly, i could read another thousand pages of fitz on the road, picking up companions, finding out new information, and reading little story, after little story, to eventually lead up to one big masterpiece. i feel like robin hobb is so amazing at creating characters, because you not only love them, and love reading about them, but you get so attached to them and their lives. i felt fitz’s heartbreak, his rage, his happiness, his contentment, all of them so viscerally.
royal asssassin's ending was very wild to say the least, so i knew the start of this book was going to be heart wrenching, and i was indeed crying seeing fitz learn to be human again (and to contemplate if it is worth it to be human again). but in this third novel, we see him on the road with nighteyes, and on a mission to get revenge, but also on a mission to find the ones he loves - even if they are in a very different location than the mission for revenge. we get to see fitz meet different people, different minstrels, and be in different inns, different towns, who are all trying to stay safe from the forged ones who are out attacking anyone and everyone. and truly there is not much more i can say without getting into major spoilers.
let me do some other really fast, somewhat vague things that i really loved about this book: i loved all the discussions with the fool and with gender and how that can be something so fluid, and so changing, but also something others will prioritize over knowing way more than you could/ever will. i loved everything we learned about elderlings and dragons! and i really liked the first starting glimpses of a new generation being forged by war and hiding, but also by love and hope.
overall, i just can’t recommend this trilogy, and the start of this overarching series, enough. i loved this story, the heartbreak and the love that is so easily felt throughout every chapter. and i know i will carry so many of these characters with me forever. i also am so excited to finally start liveship traders because that is a brand new series for me, and i am so curious how a new cast of characters are going to maybe cross paths with fitz.
trigger + content warnings: blood, slavery, violence, death, murder, gore, seizures, mentions of animal death in past, mentions of suicidal thoughts, poison, drugging, insects, talk of abortion, talk of loss of a baby during child birth, death of a child, illness, physical assault, threat of rape, talk of rape in past, human trafficking, attempted suicide, loss of a loved one, animal abuse, ableism (in negative light), and maybe misgendering (also always in a negative light - i believe the character in this book is somewhere on the gender fluidity spectrum, and could possibly not care about any and all gender labeling, but just use care in case something like this could be triggering for you)

“And Yona is human too. No one can stop themselves from falling in love.
i love seeing yona just continue to reclaim her own agency and just become more of a badass each installment. look at my katniss everdeen wow. i just love yona so much, but i also loved seeing all the dragons come together, learn to work together, and want to continue to choose each other and yona.
and wow at finally being reunited with su-won and get a glimpse into what he has been up to (while also seeing the cover of vol. 8 and quaking)! also, the love potion chapter at the end of this... hak, we are all rooting for youuuuuu !!

I am so torn on giving this a three or four star rating. this book was for sure too long, and for sure had way too many parts tha1.) Fourth Wing ★★★★
I am so torn on giving this a three or four star rating. this book was for sure too long, and for sure had way too many parts that i had to push myself through, but the end of this book felt five stars to me, so here we are. I actually think the pacing was the weakest and strongest parts of this second installment, because again some chapters were so pointless and tedious, but then the book would hit such a fast paced stride that I didn’t want to put it down and had to know what was going to happen next.
like i said in my review of fourth wing, there is nothing ground breaking within this fantasy romance (i mean, i guess so a little with it seeming like goodreads made a brand new category for her), but it is a fun read and a fun world to be in. the banter is a little cringe at times. the twists and turns are a little wild and back to back to back at the end of part one and part two, but i also couldn’t stop turning the pages with speed. and overall, there was just way more things i enjoyed than disliked.
i loved that we got to see the other quadrants of this school and them working with the dragon riders sometimes. i loved all the additional “friends we met in this one (yes, even that one. maybe extra that one lol). i really extra loved all the family dynamics within these pages (even though i was very emotional throughout). and i loved seeing more signets and learning more about them (and all the foreshadowing of what is to come with them). the dragons are the best part of this story, so i loved every single scene with them. but the best part of these reading experiences is buddy reading with so many of my friends and theorycrafting about everything. truly overall i had a really good time with this one and it was a fun read with an absolutely wild ending.
trigger + content warnings from the author: "Iron Flame is a nonstop-thrilling adventure fantasy set in the brutal and competitive world of a military college for dragon riders, which includes elements regarding war, psychological and physical torture, imprisonment, intense violence, brutal injuries, perilous situations, blood, dismemberment, burning, murder, death, animal death, graphic language, loss of family, grief, and sexual activities that are shown on the page."
additional trigger + content warnings i wrote down while reading (the last two could be potential spoilers so please use caution): drugging, ptsd depiction, nightmares, medical attention refusal, alcohol consumption, self harm to get blood for magic, mention of parental abandonment in past, suicide/self sacrifice

“I know the spells I make aren't helpful, but it's still an important dream to me.
oh, this second installment was even better than the first! i loved seeing the friendships, some easy + some hard, between these little apprentices, and seeing them work together. (i extra love tetia so very much!) i loved the introduction of some new characters and some new groups. i love the brushbuddy, forever + ever. truly, these pages were just filled with so much that was so easy to love. i am not sure how i am going to restrain myself from immediately purchasing volume three.
i go back and forth with wanting to call these cozy, because there is a lot at stake with this plot, but the way i had all the best cozy feelings at a rainy day picnic, under a bridge, with a little magic involved. and the art for those panels was so extra lovely, heart warming, and even hunger inducing.
trigger and content warnings: implied verbal abuse in the past to a child, anxiety depiction, + mention of harm to a parent in vol 1.

“I would rather lose this entire war than live without you, and if that means I have to prove myself over and over, then I'll do it. You gave me your heart, and I'm keeping it.
i promise you, no one is more surprised than me. the hype really is real and valid, but what made me fall in love was something i was not expecting to find within these pages. i will honestly say that the content of this book was probably more of a four star from me (still amazing obviously), but the reading experience for me was truly above any five stars i could possibly give this.
it has been so many years since the book community has had a book like this, where everyone is just vibrating with excitement. from the book being sold out everywhere, to all bookish platforms non-stop talking about it, to threads and threads of theorycrafting, to having the happiest of conversations with my friends, this book really is impossible to not know about if you’re in any part of bookish spaces. but why i think this book is so successful, and what surprised me the most, is the insane nostalgia this book was able to evoke from me, because fourth wing feels like all the fantasy series i grew up devouring and obsessing over.
i completely recognize this is not a perfect book, but rebecca yarros has created a feeling that i haven’t felt since vampire academy, twilight, hunger games, divergent, falling kingdoms. i feel like she personally handed me a big cup of my favorite nostalgia, that i almost forgot the taste of, and for that she really is going to get all the stars from me.
but the story of this book is good and solid, and the characters are truly amazing as well. violet is such an amazing main character, and i felt so much pride for her throughout this book. I love her sister, i love her bestie, i love all the dragons with my whole entire heart, and xaden is six stars all on his own as well.
i will forever adore a boarding school setting and a main character who loves the stories she grew up reading. And this book really did have a few good twists that surprised me. the pacing was great and made me never want to put this book down. overall, i really just do not have a bad thing to say - this was a complete joy to read and will forever be a happy memory of the reading experience.
trigger + content warnings: war themes, mention of heart failure, loss of a parent in the past, loss of a loved one/friend, loss of an animal (dragon), death, murder, blood, violence, vomit, anxiety depiction, self sacrificing actions, and ableism (always in a negative light). i know i compared the feeling of this to many ya series i grew up loving, but this is a very adult book with very adult themes !!
“I hate the thought of dying from something I could have avoided... But losing you would be even worse.
oh i really loved learning about the four dragons, and four gifts, and four dragon warriors destined to protect the crimson dragon king so very much! i feel like this third installment really showed where the series is headed and i absolutely cannot wait.
and very in love with gija + granny ;___; so sweet. i can't wait to make it back to this legendary village one day.

okay, i just love this world a whole lot. this book was even better for me, because we mostly got to stay in this little village that has completely stolen my heart. this second installment follows cin's best friend, brie, who is also a big lover of paranormal romance, get to live her best romantic main character life. but much like the first book, these also deal with some heavy themes. but there is also so much light, happiness, and laughter within these pages. oh and a lot of steam (view spoiler)[the way i was not expecting or prepared for the tentacles lol (hide spoiler)]!
i extra think this one would be perfect for the autumn season. and... i just cannot wait for more books in this series, but i truly never want to leave this world!

(please look at some content warnings down below!) but i really enjoyed this one, especially the first half and set up. this also is a four part quest storyline, and you all know how much i love watching characters travel to their adventures! i was so impressed with this, and i promise it is a very high three star, but i just didn't love how... intense.. the love interest was towards the last half of this book. but i very much do not think that will be an issue for many readers, especially romance readers! plus cinnamon is just the absolutely best main character, and she is so effortlessly funny! i am so excited to continue on in this world!

“For when man has the power to do anything, then anything he will do.
this was such a cute start to a story about a girl who has been intrigued by magic her whole life, only to realize that it has been at her fingertips in wait. also, the magic system in this is so smart and unique - i am very in love with it and even more in love with the visual learning incorporated into this story! but there are a lot of secrets in this first volume, one big one being a magical school/apprenticeship that is going to change how she has viewed the world for her entire life.
but why i gave this volume four stars was truly because this has some of the most beautiful art i've ever seen. from castles, to trees, these panels were able to evoke so much emotion from me, so very unexpectedly. one of the most impressive mangakas i've ever laid m eyes upon, truly.
i am so thankful so many friends recommended this one to me. i couldn't resist already purchasing volume two!

“Our words, like our hearts, are weapons still hot from the forging, beating themselves into new shapes each time we swing them.
The first of brandon sanderson’s secret cosmere projects was everything for me. This story is truly unlike any other that brandon has created before, for so many reasons, but mostly because it reads like a fairytale! This is inspired by The Princess Bride, which I actually have never read before, but it didn't hinder my reading experience whatsoever! And just seeing some long time favorites from the cosmere world, and some cameos and name drops that I was not prepared for, felt like coming home - even if this setting is one that I would have never anticipated! But dare I say, because I know this is a keyword everyone is looking for these days this was cozy fantasy perfection!
You do not need to read any other book in the cosmere to read this story, but you will miss out on so many easter eggs throughout and i am not sure if not having that appreciation will hinder your reading experience - so here is a little warning, in case!
To put this very briefly, this is a story about a girl who leaves the only home she has ever known to brave a very strange ocean, in a very different cosmere world, with a very sweet pirate crew (for the most part), for love. Because at the end of all my favorite types of stories, it’s always for love and it’s always worth it.
But I so quickly fell in love with Tress and her teacups and her story. Also, if you’ve been following my reviews for a while, you will know how much I adore a questing storyline and this book delivered that and more so! I also feel like every cosmere series has such a perfect and different found family, yet you always feel like you are a part of that family as well, and it’s so beautiful each time, but this one was extra close to my heart.
I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on the second secret project, because the bar has just been set so very high for me. (plus howard lyon is one of my favorite magic the gathering artist so it was extra perfect for me!) I also have a very soft spot for the character who narrates this story and to keep being secretive I loved the whimsy of this story extra, too! muhahahahah!
I predict this will probably make my best of 2023 list, because my heart overflows more and more each time i think about this story. It just felt so warm and cozy and was filled with so much light and hope - and that’s exactly what I want to be reading in my life right now.
trigger + content warnings: mentions of war, poison/drugging, vomit, captivity, murder, talk of cancer/tumors very briefly, brief weight loss comment, mention of slavery, and lots of mentions of spores (i only say this because i think a lot of people are watching last of us right now and it might make you think about things lol)
