I see a lot of complaints that the poems lack commentary. I loved that this was pure poetry without being bogged down by afterthought commentary and dissections. The poems are meant to be just that. Poems. Of course, an author always has a meaning or a thought in mind when a poem is written, but the beauty in poetry is that the reader gets to take away from the poem however it affected them personally.
Overall, I thought this was great, and I didn't realize how many T.S. Eliot poems I had already heard or was a fan of.
This is great for fans of poetry that don't need half a book to talk about the poems. This book lets the poems speak for themselves as they were intended.
This was a powerful and unique, and exhilarating way to read a story. This was my first Liz Acevedo book, but it surely won't be my last.

I highly recommend this one, even if you aren't into poetry. I was lost in the imagery created and the emotions that came across through the words and didn't even remember I was reading the story through poems.
Definitely shed tears for X and her life struggles and relationship with God and her mother.

Ocean Vuong uses short story sets of poetry to explore humanity's deepest emotions towards heritage, the language barrier, immigration, homosexuality, self-discovery, self-loathing, and self-loss.
The language flowed beautifully across the pages and did a phenomenal job bringing Ocean's emotions to life, especially when they were hard emotions to feel.
So many spectacular quotes. Here are some that stood out to me: "He grabbed my shoulder and spun me to face him. 'Look at me when I'm talking to you.' He was only nine but had already mastered the dialect of damaged American fathers."
"Do you know people get rich off of sadness? I want to meet the millionaire of American sadness. I want to look him in his eye, shake his hand, and say, 'It's been an honor to serve my country."
Trigger Warning: some abuse is depicted, and graphic sexual discovery between two boys.
Overall, this was a brilliant 4 star read for me. Definitely worth experiencing....more
Epic Poems like this don't really get written anymore.
There is so much going on, such as weepign narrative of Beowulf. Very original and entertainingEpic Poems like this don't really get written anymore.

I do wonder about all of the different translations though and how large the differeneces are in terms of religiously bent translations and the way that this affected the translation of the symbolism of the poem.
Solid 4 Stars. Worth a read at least once in life...more
