Or, if she had to (and she prob made alot churning this out as it hit the best seller lists) at least she could have tagged the book as young adult, or romance. Seriously. Lacks credibility (young (37 yr old) cop in New York asks to be assigned a murder case because he recognizes the area it happened as his ex-girlfriend's?) and is so far from a depiction of healthy women it put me off (really, a stranger makes a comment about your arms and you obsess so much about it it almost overshadows your best friend's murder? I've been reading as many Dervla McTiernan books as my library has, and have been enjoying them. Unfortunately, on this one the writing isn't up to par. Not sure what's changed, it started out reasonable, and I enjoy the backdrop of using social media to sway (or create) public opinion, but the writing of the 2nd half of the book lacks credulity and isnt well written. So disappointing. Will have to rethink the one I have on hold :(...more

I see books like this rated and reviewed so highly, and I can barely read the first couple chapters without disgust. And no, not at the acts of murder. More that the main character finds it as reprehensible to have treated an ex-boyfriend cavalierly after just admitting to being a part of murder and dismemberment of her best friend. And then ravenously eating a burger. Come on. Is this really good writing? Could not finish....more

There were parts that were so awful and disturbing that I wanted to turn away. I am awed by the mind that can conceive the characters and plot and write in such an unflinching way. Did I enjoy the book? No, I wouldn't say that. But I was compelled to read it to the ending. And I will continue to read Cormac McCarthy....more

Compelling and disturbing. Realistic portrayal of abuse and mental health issues. It's like passing a horrific accident. It's real, and raw, and painful. I'm only a 1/3 through, but feel the need to write a review now. If the book suddenly deteriorates or loses focus I will edit my review, but I can't imagine that. I'm perplexed at other's negative reviews, I truly don't understand, but I guess some want light, superficial reads far enough from real life that their complacency isn't threatened. ...more

It certainly had plot twists and turns, and it kept me going. But, it also had moments that were groan out loud challenges in suspending disbelief. Seriously? A baby monitor that 'runs out of batteries'? Come on. They may have battery backup for if the power goes out, but parents take those things seriously. They are plugged in, and stay plugged in - just for this reason. And a mom whose baby doesn't wake at the normal time, or 15 minutes later, or 1/2 hour later...any parent would crack the door, or check the monitor to see what's up. That's just basic. There were other things that irritated that aren't worth mentioning, except the final bit where the therapist is dating someone from her group. Most people know, but as a therapist I guarantee this is unethical, and would result in her losing her job and license. It's too bad, the book did have promise, and I wanted to like it, but these bits tainted it for me. When I looked at other books by the author and saw there was another where the main character was a psychologist, I decided to take a pass on it...if this book is an example, I don't think I can stomach that one!...more

I had so enjoyed The Road that I'd awaited this book with anticipation, especially as it was first in a series. I had such trouble getting through it, and it was a frustrating disappointment. At one point I stopped, and checked again what it was supposed to be about, and tried yet again to get into it. Sadly, it didn't improve (for me) right to the end. Confusing, tangential, disconnected. Maybe for someone else it held attention, so the pieces fit, but unfortunately for me, it did not. I won't order the next book in the series.

I wouldn't have rated so low, or been so negative had my library put this in the right category. I started to get a hint that it was a teen/young adult book, and went back to check, but no, it was rated as dystopian, general audience, so I kept reading. But seriously. I could barely finish it, and only did because I like post-apocalypse - especially post-pandemic. This is a romance and really could only be enjoyed by teens, or teens at heart. Wish I had those hours of my life back. Now off to rinse my mind out with a real book! ...more
