i like holly bourne and expected a better book from her.. but this was so bad? i understand the book really is just about olivia being a horrible person but.. it was still quite frustrating and i couldn't sympathize with her. you could argue that olivia has a mental illness that clouded her judgement. but there were so many instances that made me think that she's just a horrible, entitled and insensitive human being. for instance, 1. girls are sooooo mean to me bcs boys LOVE me (this was mentioned more times than i can count) 2. treating her only bestfriend, who didn't abandon her, like shit and mentioning her perhaps 3,4 times in the entire book (that may have been bad writing) 3. taking advantage of another guy struggling with mental illness and getting pissed of AT HIM when he refuses her advances. 4. is admitted to a mental hospital willingly because she is desperate for a change but decides that she knows better than the professionals there even AFTER witnessing fellow patients getting better
you know, she's so wrapped up in her bubble that we don't learn ANYTHING about the characters. even the love interest which actually pissed me off, becase we don't anything about lewis other than the fact that he is OBSESSED with maths. he was such an extraordinary character, just like sophie, and i wish we had learned more about them.
another thing that i absolutely disliked is how quickly hannah was turned into a mean girl. it's like someone HAD to be the mean girl in the book and it just didn't make sense to me?? also, i could, you know, wrap my head around the idea of 'kindness is contagious' but it just felt too much like a disney movie???? plus, the ending was so abrupt... like what just happened?
overall, i think the book had so much potential and it could've been executed well if we explored ALL the characters...more

Honestly, can't wrap my head around the fact that Meg Cabot - a woman who's been in the publishing industry longer than i have been alive - has written such a bad book.
Is it yet another case of trying hopelessly to resonate with the modern audience? Because that's truly what it felt like.
I have a lot of problems.
Number 1: Is Jessica stupid? Because she seems to be. Please tell me how.. HOW are you going to offer a mysterious man - who, btw, you met only twice - your home as temporary shelter? You've had like two conversations with this guy and you're just.. letting him live in your home. Just because he's hot?????
This could lead to two of these options; either a cringey, rom-com with no flavor or well, a murder. Fortunately for us, Miss. Cabot chose the romance path.
Number 2: as you can already tell that the romance was cringey, insta love with zero chemistry. I couldn't even bother with this book tbh.
Number 3: Ahh nevermind. I can't bother with this review. No amount of autumn descriptions, small town vibes could save this book. It just felt like one of those disney movie skits you see on Youtube but in a book form. Especially that last speech. I want to erase that from my memory. ...more

Besides, the writing felt flat, nothing major happens, the vampire world is not explored (I'm even confused about Freddie's heritage.. like wut?), the third and final act is underwhelming and don't get me started on the insta-love and physical infatuation. Personally, I expected the vampire to be more sarcastic - like Reginald - and I was kind of disappointed that Frederick was just.. a big old child....more
