It had a strong beginning but only 50 pages in and i was so disappointed. the book’s constant switching between different characters perspectives was absolutely unnecessary and took away from what could actually be a brilliant book. but what really bothered me was the book’s subtle orientalism and the way it portrayed white characters as saviors. It felt like it was reinforcing this age-old idea that oppressed afghan people, especially the women, can only be saved by western intervention. it felt like, sometimes, the sole purpose of the plot was to present the long history in a way that it appeases the white audience....more

i like holly bourne and expected a better book from her.. but this was so bad? i understand the book really is just about olivia being a horrible person but.. it was still quite frustrating and i couldn't sympathize with her. you could argue that olivia has a mental illness that clouded her judgement. but there were so many instances that made me think that she's just a horrible, entitled and insensitive human being. for instance, 1. girls are sooooo mean to me bcs boys LOVE me (this was mentioned more times than i can count) 2. treating her only bestfriend, who didn't abandon her, like shit and mentioning her perhaps 3,4 times in the entire book (that may have been bad writing) 3. taking advantage of another guy struggling with mental illness and getting pissed of AT HIM when he refuses her advances. 4. is admitted to a mental hospital willingly because she is desperate for a change but decides that she knows better than the professionals there even AFTER witnessing fellow patients getting better
you know, she's so wrapped up in her bubble that we don't learn ANYTHING about the characters. even the love interest which actually pissed me off, becase we don't anything about lewis other than the fact that he is OBSESSED with maths. he was such an extraordinary character, just like sophie, and i wish we had learned more about them.
another thing that i absolutely disliked is how quickly hannah was turned into a mean girl. it's like someone HAD to be the mean girl in the book and it just didn't make sense to me?? also, i could, you know, wrap my head around the idea of 'kindness is contagious' but it just felt too much like a disney movie???? plus, the ending was so abrupt... like what just happened?
overall, i think the book had so much potential and it could've been executed well if we explored ALL the characters...more
