This book was honestly much more fun than I expected. I listened to 6 hours while commuting a few days ago and it was easy to get lost in the book thanks to the writing. Whenever I saw this book on Libby, I honestly thought "not that book again". I finally decided to listen to the audio since it was only 9 hours. It wasn't much of a mystery, the thriller part of the book takes place at the end of the book. I won't say I saw it coming or didn't because I wasn't making any effort honestly (I become a mostly passive reader when listening to audiobooks sadly) but I found it okay and not disappointing.
I also liked that the characters are gray, even Jane. There's no "good" person to completely root for. I rated 3 stars because it's a fun book but just that. Not memorable and I didn't connect to the characters.
The audiobook was well done and featured three different narrators. I would recommend it if you're looking for a light thriller to listen to on a road trip!...more

I wanted to read some fun holidays rom-com and this audiobook had no holds on Libby. The idea behind a fake boyfriend + farm sounded like fun and it was at first. However, the story itself was too “sweet to my taste. I am not a fan of romance in general. Hence, I only recommend it if you are, and not just looking for a fun holidays romance read....more

I liked learning about the SCOPE project but I know nothing has stayed with me. I wish the story was more focused on Eleanor. I am tired of these double timelines, especially since the PoVs in the past are more interesting. In this case, I'd believe a chronological story with Eleanor as a MC might have been better or maybe Kayla could've been more interesting......more

It's I mentioned last year that I wanted to take a break from WWII books but nonetheless, I chose to read this book because of its interesting story. It's based on the true story of a renowned Ukrainian sniper during the war. I haven't heard of Mila Pavlichenko before this book and it's always interesting to see historic figures brought to life in fiction. So it was a real plus for Quinn in this book, that and her strong writing style.
Other than that, however, I must admit that I couldn't connect with the characters and sometimes even if my mind wandered while listening to the audio, I wouldn't feel lost at all (nor care honestly). So the idea was really nice and the story is good for what it is not in its details, was it connecting to the characters or a gripping plot.
The audiobook's narration was excellent. If you're considering reading this book in this format, you wouldn't go wrong by choosing to listen to the audio!
I don't have much to say about the book other than the points I mentioned before. I'm glad I now know her story for sure. I just hope Quinn decides to write outside of WWII because she has a big potential and I would like to read her books if set during a different time period. I truly like how she chooses a heroine figure from the war and brings her to fiction work but I've read enough books set during that time and would prefer to explore different historical events....more

I’m listening to the audio (and I’ve waited for it such a long time on Libby) yet I am unable to keep track of the story. The timelines are very different + there’s a lot of description. I might come back to it in a reading format not sure yet.
I will not rate this book of course nor add it to my reading challenge. I honestly had too many different timelines and perspectives for me to keep track of for an audiobook (I usually clean/do house chores/walk while listening to audiobooks)....more

I read the description but it’s been a while since I read a story featuring a love triangle so I didn’t think much of it. I also assumed Peter wouldn’t be portrayed in a positive light. But he was. So this is a trope i do not enjoy. If you don’t love triangles, go ahead. Almost all of my GR friends who read it enjoyed it. But if you don’t like love triangles regardless of the genre, then this book isn’t worth your time.
I started reading this book considering it’s adult fiction and maybe now that my reading taste matured (a bit), I can see the story in a different light. I didn’t. I truly still can’t like books where the MC isn’t sure who’s the person she loves The writing was beautiful though. So it really depends on what you like/dislike. Just make sure to read a bit about the story before you start, there are several triggers in this book after all....more

When we reached the ending and the climax, I was not surprised of the finale because really, there’s nothing else that could’ve happened. I honestly expected a lot more of this book and its premise.

The only chapter I enjoyed was probably Candle's (with Mercy), the chapter wasn't that bad either but then I lost interest in the story. Luckily, the book was short and I was done with the audiobook within a few days since I had two long drives.

I wish we had more information on the country of asylum but I guess the point was to be general because this reflects many countries' views on refugees. The book was short, the author delivered the main idea behind his book in a sufficient number of pages and he did it very well.
I recommend reading the book. I tried listening to the audio but I couldn’t maintain my focus. When I started reading, I made progress faster and understood the story better.
Overall, recommended if you’re looking for a short story about a refugee’s (young boy in this case) onward movement, by sea, to another country as well as the response of the local authorities in thr host country. ...more

I honestly didn't have very high hopes but I was intrigued to say the least since books featuring this theme are rare.
I'll summarise my opinion on this book through bullet points: - it started good enough, the atmosphere was interesting and the foundation for the characters was well placed. - although the characters are adults, it gave me major YA vibes (not necessarily a bad thing but better know this beforehand in case one wasn't a fan of this style). - the magic was too vague - I'm no fan of this in fantasy. - the characters were okay, but none were memorable. Aicha was probably the best-written character - using Arabic words I understand was super cool since well, I get the meaning, but was surprised when some keywords weren't translated. For example, when someone took the "makhraj" which translated to exit. It would've been helpful to the reader. - the book was mostly fast-paced but I was still bored? the story wasn't very gripping to me, unfortunately.
the book was overall fun but nothing I'd remember. It was a light fantasy read and I needed that since I was reading a heavy fantasy book on the side. It could've been much better with more complex characters and a better-structured story. More points to be added later!...more
