Una ragazzina innocente, un prete peccaminoso e un cavaliere feroce ma ultimamente capace di intravedere su seguire il bene e la salvezza. Da non perdere!!

Non e' stata una lettura facile anche se conoscevo molto bene i miti greci avendo studiato per anni a scuola greco antico e l' odissea.. Non voglio stare a tediarvi con riassunti di cio' che troverete nel libro, ma cio' che e' sbalorditivo e' la facilita' con cui Madeline Miller riesce a donare l'aspetto fragile umano anche negli Dei. I dialoghi sono veramente lineari e che rapiscono nello scorrete della trama. Ogni personaggio viene presentato nella sua complessita' psicologica, che sia uomo o Dio. La parte forse piu' debole l'ho trovata proprio all' inizio con la presentazione dell' infanzie e giovinezza di Patroclo. Il personaggio che purtroppo rimane sempre in una sorta di ombra e mai con un ruolo piu' approfondito come troviamo nel mito e' Odisseo. Risulta sempre una figura in secondo piano, totalmente poco incidente nella storia e nel fato di Achille. Bella la figura di Briseide, e mi e' piaciuto che l' autrice le abbia donato questo ruolo cosi' importante accanto ad Achille e a Patroclo., aspetto, come spiegato nella prefazione dalla Miller, inesistente nell' Odissea di Omero. Una vera impresa titanica, nel vero senso della parola, cio' che ha compiuto la Miller, ma grazie al dono della sua scrittura, ha donato in questo racconto, una complessita' di affetti e di pensiero che poco si percepisce durante lo studio dei miti greci [image]
I devoured this book during my summer vacation in Crete. It was not an easy read even though I knew Greek myths very well having studied ancient Greek and the 'Odyssey for years in school. I don't want to bore you with summaries of what you will find in the book, but what is astounding is the ease with which Madeline Miller manages to give the fragile human aspect even in the gods. The dialogue is truly linear and rapt in the flow of the plot. Each character is presented in their psychological complexities, whether man or God. Perhaps the weakest part I found right it, is at the 'beginning, with the presentation of Patroclus' childhood and youth. The character who unfortunately always remains in a sort of shadow and never with a more in-depth role as we find in the myth is Odysseus. He always turns out to be a figure in the background, totally unaccidental in Achilles' story and fate. Beautiful is the figure of Briseis, and I liked that the author gave her this important role next to Achilles and Patroclus, an aspect, as explained by Miller's preface, not existent in Homer's Odyssey. A true titatic feat, in the true sense of the word, what Miller has accomplished, but thanks to the gift of her writing, she has bestowed in this tale, a complexity of affect and thought that is little perceived during the study of Greek myths....more

I thought it was a humorous book, but instead the theme is related to eating disorders and psychopathological relationships between mother and daughter. Having daughters born in the late 1990s, I found myself in the midst of every tv series and programs mentioned in the book, I recalled with fondness when my daughters and I used to watch Icarly on TV, never, ever could I have imagined what life, what fiction, pains and falsehoods lie behind the entertainment productions. Jennette's story grabs your heart, you want to go into the book to hug her and tell her that she is worth it not for her abilities but just for being in the world and longing for wholeness and happiness from life. And if I have to say it to the end, I even feel sorry for her mother, who died believing to her distorted life reality of continuous fictions.

Pensavo si trattasse di un libro umoristico e invece il tema e' legato alla patologia di disturbi alimentari e relazioni psicopatologiche tra madre e figlia. Avendo figlie nate alla fine degli anni novanta, mi sono ritrovata in pieno in ogni serie tiv e programmi citati nel libro, ho ricordato con simpatia quando con le mie figlie guardavamo Icarly alla TV, mai e poi mai avrei potuto immaginare che vita, che finzione, dolori e falsita' si celano dietro alle produzioni di intrattenimento. La storia di Jennette prende il cuore, vorresti entrare nel libro per abbracciarla e dirle che vale non per le sue capacita' ma solo per essere al mondo e desiderare la pienezza e la felicita' dalla vita. E se devo dirla sino in fondo, mi dispiace persino per sua madre, morta credendo alla sua realta' di vita distorta di finzioni continue....more

I will say right away that I enjoyed the book very much and I read it in a couple of days.... the story is really dramatic but at the same time well balanced in the plot, the tragic and painful events never take over completely, overshadowing the action of the plot, on the contrary....... there is absolutely too much plot and there, in my opinion, lies the fragility of this book. There are so many stories and sub-stories that ultimately weigh down the plot line. Anna's life is unbelievable or at times too much unbelivable, devastated by death, pain and loneliness, she never seems to break down in despair, a condition that seems a little too much for a human being of this world. I would have liked to know more about the life of the village of Eyam without spending too much time glossing over the constant passages in the characters and their brief, fleeting appearances in the plot. Rector Michael and his wife Eleanor are the people who disturbed me the most. While they tried to find an appropriate solution to the spread of the plague in the village, they also adopt unclear behaviour during the story that is only revealed, not clearly and precisely, at the end. I would have liked to know more about the witches, the miners and characters such as the Quaker girl...... but their appearance in the plot did not affect the flow of the story very much, making the whole thing absolutely thrown together just to fill in the various events in a superficial way, unfortunately. But we come to the sore point of the book....... but what about the ending!? Absurd, pulled out of nowhere and really not very believable.... I closed the book grateful for the wonderful writing of Geraldine Brooks but with a slight bitterness in my mouth for the choice of how to end Anna's story.

Dico subito che il libro mi è piaciuto molto e l' ho letto in un paio di giorni.... la storia è veramente drammatica ma allo stesso tempo ben bilanciata nell trama, i fatti tragicie dolorosi non prendono mai totalmente il sopravvento offuscando l' azione della trama., anzi.......viè assolutamente troppa trama ed è qui , secondo me che giace la fragilità di questo libro. Vi sono tantissime vicende e sotto storie che alla fine appensantiscono la linea della trama. La vita di Anna è incredibile o a volte poco credibile, devastata dalla morte , dal dolore e dalla solitudine sembra non spezzarsi mai nella disperazione, una condizione che pare un filino troppo non umana. Mi sarebbe piaciuto sapere di più sulla vita del villaggio di Eyam senza spendere tropp otempo sorvolando sopra i continui passaggi nei personaggi e nelle loro brevi e fugaci apparizioni nella trama. Il rettore Michael e sua moglie Eleanor sono le persone che più mi hanno inquietato. Se da una parte hanno cercto di trovare una soluzione adeguata al diffondersi della peste nel villaggio, dall' altra addottano comportamenti poco chiari durante la storia che vengono svelati, non in modo chiaro e preciso, unicamente alla fine. Avrei voluto sapere di più sulle streghe, sui minatori e sui personaggi come la bimba quacchera...... ma la loro comparsa nella trama non ha inciso molto sul fluire della storia, rendendo il tutto assolutamente buttato lì giusto per riempire di purtroppo in modo superficiale i vari avvenimenti. Ma arriviamo al tasto dolente del libro....... ma che finale è !!?? Assurdo, tirato fuori dal nulla e veramente poco credibile.... Ho chiuso il libro grata per la meravigliosa scrittura di Geraldine Brooks ma con un lieve amaro in bocca per le scelta di come finire la storia di Anna.

Honestly, I was very puzzled from the beginning, the reader is catapulted reading about Mexico struggling with internal civil strife in the first half of the 1800's. The problem that immediately arises, however, is that these substories will weigh and slow down the already very fragile plot of this story. Beatriz, once married to Rodolfo, the owner of a large plantation and master of the Hacienda San Isidro, will find herself trapped in a cursed house where many mysteries, deaths and curses will lie together with the daily work of this Hacienda... The problematic nexus of this story is the absence of tension, anxiety and unsettling fear that one must master while reading. Is this in a thriller with paranormal elements? a gothic story? I had a hard time figuring out how to categorise this book. When Andres appears in the plot, this pretentious witch doctor, the worst of the worst starts to appear...... because the plot wraps itself in a chasm of boredom and events that repeat themselves without bringing anything to the action of the story. People die as if they were listed in a documentary, tension and eerie feeling never come. I closed the book on the last page with relief. OK writing, but unfortunately, in my personal opinion, mediocre works are published by authors who to call them such is really embarrassing. How certain things manage to reach publication is a mystery.

Sinceramente sono rimasta molto perplessa da subito,. ..... il lettore viene catapultato in questo Mexico alle prese con lotte civili interne nella prima metà dell' 800?, il problrm che si affaccia subito pero, è che queste substories peseranno e rallenteranno tantissimo la già fragilissima trama di questa Storia. Beatriz, una volta sposata con rodolfo, il propeitario di una larga piantagione e padrone dell'Hacienda San Isidro, si troverà a vivere intrappolata in una casa maledetta dove tanti misteri, morti e maledizioni giaceranno insieme alla lavoro quotidiamo di questa Hacienda.. Il nesso problematico di questa storia è l' asenza di tensione, di ansia e di paura che bisognac con maestria, saperdare durante la lettura. Nulla di tutto questo, è in thriller con elementi paranormali? una storia gotica? Ho fatto molta fatica a capire come catalogare questo libro, io non sono riuscita. Quando nella trama compare poi Andres, questo pretencamiffato da stregone, il peggio del peggio inizia a comparire...... perchè la trama si avviluppa in una voragine di noia e di eventi che si ripetono senza portare nulla all' azione della storia. Muoionole persone come se morissero elencate in un documentario....... tensione e eerie feeling mai pervenute. Ho chiuso il libro all' ultima pagina con sollievo. Scrittura ok, ma purtroppo, parere personale, si pubblicano lavori mediocri da autori che chiamarli tali è imbarazzante. A family killed for no apparent reason on which Detective Aaron Falk will have to solve, specially called to his hometown from where he had fled years before with his father.. Bravo to Jane Harper in developing the various characters and fitting them into the developments of the story, the final twist is certainly sudden leaving the reader pleasantly impressed. Why such a restrained rating? Because in the second half of the book I found myself bored and tired by its prolonged lack of resolution. The Detective did not always behave respecting the discoveries found in earlier chapters of the book. and some characters were inserted without bringing anything to the story but as filler to the narrative only. Pretty reading but without any particular praise.

Una famiglia uccisa senza apparente motivo su cui il Detective Aaron Falk dovrà risolvere, chiamato appositamente nella sua cittadina d' origine da dove era scappato anni prima con il padre... Brava Jane Harper nel sviluppare i caratteri dei vari personaggi e ad inserirli negli sviluppi della storia, la svolta finale è sicuramente improvvisa lasciando il lettore piacevolmente colpito. Perchè una valutazione così contenuta? Perchè nella seconda metà del libro mi sono ritrovata annoiata e stanca dalla sua prolungata assenza di risoluzione. Il Detective non sempre si comportava rispettando le scoperte trovate nei capitoli precedenti del libro. e alcuni personaggi sono stati inseriti senza che portassero nulla alla solo ma solo come riempitivo alla narrazione. I had been moved and impressed for so long with the book "The Door," also by Szabo, this one is too no less as beauty, schocking and delicate as the same time. A father forcing his daughter to enter in a Calvinist boarding school in the 'extreme outskirts of Hungary during winter 1943. Gina young girl of 14, orphaned by her mother, she then finds herself alone to face her everyday life. Why did her father, a major Leutenant in the Hungarian army, confine her to that horrible place devoid of human warmth? And it is in this extreme place, made only of very strict rules, impositions and silence, that Gina will experience a traumatic episode of loneliness and wickedness...... but will it really be so? Who is this Abigail to whom all the girls, secretly turn for help and support by laying a note at the foot of the statue dedicated to her? Abigail, an unknown soul until the end of the story, will be the pivot, the grace and the gift of a 'humanity made of love and help; through her the girls will rediscover that humanity made of joys sorrows, and tenderness. Giorgina will rediscover and experience forgiveness and the grace of friendship when it is revealed to her that her imprisonment is nothing but an enormous act of love by her father, hiding her and locking her there , will save her from the traitors in the army devoted to the Germans who would like to use her as bait to find her fugitive father. Ho finito di leggere questo libro ormai da qualche giorno, e ancora mi ritrovo a pensare a questa lettura e ai personaggi che fanno parte di questa storia. Ero rimasta commossa e colpita per tanto tempo con il libro "La porta" sempre della Szabo, anche questo non è da meno come bellezza per l' anima. Un padre che obbliga la figlia ad entrare in un collegio calvinista nell' estrema periferia dell' ungheria, siamo nel 1943, Gina giovane ragazza di 14 orfana di madre, si ritrova quindi sola ad affrontare la sua quotidianità ? Perchè suo padre, maggiore dell' esercito ungherese, l' ha confinata in quel posto orribile privo di calore umano? Ed è proprio in questo luogo estremo, fatto solo di regole rigidissime, imposizioni e silenzio che Gina vivrà un episodio traumatico di solitudine e cattiveria...... ma sarà veramente così? Chi è questa Abigail a cui tutte le ragazze, segretamente si rivolgono per aiuto e supporto deponendo un bigliettino ai piedi della statua a lei dedicata? Abigail, anima sconosciuta sino alla fine della storia, sarà il perno, la grazia e il dono di un' umanità fatta di amore e di aiuto; attraverso lei le ragazze ritroveranno quell' umanità fatta di gioie dolori, e tenerezza. Giorgina ritroverà e fare esperienza del perdono e della grazia dell' amicizia quando le verrà svelato che la sua reclusione altro non è che un enorme atto d' amore del padre, nascondendola e rinchiudendola lì , la salverà dai traditori dell' esercito devoti ai tedeschi che vorrebbero usarla come esca per ritrovare il padre fuggiasco. E' stato meraviglioso leggere tutta quei fili di amore e tenerezza, fatti di volti e professori che fecero di tutto per coprire la presenza di Gina e altre ragazze in situazioni simili, nascondendole dal pericolo dell' odio politico. gina, bellissima Gina, che conoscerà così tanti sentimenti, ma soprattutto farà esperienza del perdono di fronte alla sua cocciutaggine che quasi non portò al fallimento della sua copertura, della tenerezza dell' amicizia vera, nonostante soffocata dalla rigidità delle regole del Collegio calvinista Matula. Gina, la ragazza, che vivrà l' amore più grande, di un padre che si sacrifica alla morte pur di salvare la figlia. Un amore fecondo, portato avanti dalla certezza di volti che proteggeranno la vita di questa ragazza nei momenti più duri della storia europea del ventesimo secolo....more
