Insect Hag and Other Stories by Yvette Tan is the third horror anthology collection that has a theme of real-life / realistic horror stories. It has witchcraft, Filipino superstitions / beliefs and grief. Each story is atmospheric and well-detailed 鈥 you can read this at night since it鈥檚 soft core horror. The illustrations are simple and it adds the creepy vibe especially on the last story.
I am sharing to you my top 3 stories:
鈥苍迟颈苍驳别谤补鈥 鈥 you鈥檝e got to save the best for last because this is timely to what happened during former President Duterte鈥檚 regime but add some paranormal twist to it. I love the gore and the anticipation as the story unfolds. So dark and gritty. I love it!
鈥orror Vacui鈥 鈥 My favorite line from Joshua鈥檚 grandmother and I quote 鈥淚 live alone, forgotten, no people to care for me. How do you think I survived? You don鈥檛 know what it鈥檚 like to be old, people forget when you aren鈥檛 useful. Nobody remembers an old woman. I felt sad when I was reading this book. In the Filipino culture, grandparents stay with their family rather than transferring them to nursing homes or home for the aged. It鈥檚 terrifying to feel the abandonment and being alone even if you have a family or relative.
鈥wera Usog鈥 鈥 this is a common superstition that until now my mom believes in it. You don鈥檛 just greet babies, you say 鈥減wera usog鈥 to drive away curses in life. In this story, the main character鈥檚 life is unfortunate because of sheer bad greeting by someone.

They shared their voices thru writing and it takes a lot of courage to do it. It was emotional and comforting at the same time. I cried to some pieces. I love annotating this on my end and even write short messages to the authors.
I gave this 5 stars because of its authenticity. I love how these authors bared their hearts out to us in the hopes we find our own path, embrace imperfection and most of all, our purpose in life. It was a beautiful collection. Congratulations Ms. Claire and everyone who are part of this anthology!...more
