Apparently I always start my reviews with how I got the book, so here is a little story about how I got this book. On valentine's day me and two other friends went to the cinema (we saw Black Panther in 4D and it was amazing) and after that we went to some bookstores and to a comic store. In that comic store I was actually looking for the 3rd volume of the wicked + the divine but it was nowhere to be seen. But then I found this comic and I was incredibly happy because I've heard so much hype about this one and my friend Eileen LOVES these comics. The story doesn't end there because apparently it was the comic of the month, week whatever so instead of nine euros it was 4 euros and I even got a free star wars issue with it. One of the best days of 2018 so far. But now I'm gonna talk about this comic. I will talk in depth (in a non-spoilery way) about the things I liked and didn't like about Monstress Vol. 1: Awakening.
Let's start with the art. Oh boy the art is soo beautiful. Like really really beautiful. If you thought you have read a comic with such beautiful art, think again okay this may be too big of a tastement because I personally love the art of the wicked + the divine more but I love really bright artwork. This art really feels like ancient Asian inspired and I really enjoyed that and the art is also very different than the normal art style of comics. I also loved the diversity rep of this story.
For me the story and the characters were all right. All though I did really like Master Ren (the amazing red cat) and Kippa/little fox. Kippa/little fox was really cute and I felt so bad for him. He definitely deserved better. I was definitely rooting for him. And Master Ren aka my favorite character out of this story. He has to be my favorite character because I love his snarky comments and he was really interesting. Apparently I have a thing for wise and sarcastic kitty's. HE IS A CAT WITH TWO TAILS, HOW EPIC IS THAT! I personally felt really meh about our main character Maika. I never felt that connection with her and to be honest she annoyed me quite a lot. My annoyance is probably because of her choice of words (& I will get back to that later on). And the story was absolutely something different and very unique. I am curious where the story is gonna go. And man that ending though. Why do comics always end so good? Gotta say I'm a bit hyped for reading the next volume just because of that ending. All though in my opinion is the story not the most strongest part of this comic. I wasn't that captivated at all times. I do think that the story could have been a bit better.
Now I'm going to talk about the language that was used. To word it simply: the language is bothering me. Our main character Maika Halfwolf swears a lot and by a lot I do really mean a lot. In almost every page she swore and I normally don't mind language like that but it started to bother me. I feel like it isn't necessary and that it's overdone. I also think it doesn't really fit with Maika's personality. I may sound like captain America but I really was like "LANGUAGE, watch your language!" She is supposed to be a seventeen year old girl but to me she didn't really act like a 17 year old kiddo. She sounded way younger so that's always why the swearing was bothering me. I didn't mind it when Master Ren (the two tail cat) used it because it fits his personality and that cat is an adult. Hopefully they will tone down their swearing because they used it way toooo much and it wasn't needed most of the times.
I just realised I forgot about the lectures of professor Tam Tam. Those lectures were interesting and did clear some things up for me. I think they made this comic stronger in it's world building and it totally made the story and this comic more unique.
I might read the next volume because I'm interested in where the story is going to go, but I'm not sure about this yet though. Do I think it could have been a stronger first volume? Yes, I do think that. The art did make up for the story though. We shall see what the next installments will bring and if I will read it. And I can totally see why Monstress is such a beloved comic in our bookish community.
I read and finished this book in the same day, but like it isn't showing up in the right order in my reading challenge so that's why the date is different. Read and finished it on the 18th of february!

Prince Robot became decent, though. I don't hate the guy's guts anymore. This series is definitely going to be heartbreaking......more

It truly was action-packed and delivered some emotional punches. I seriously don't understand how this managed to stay unread on my shelves for so long (it legit has been eight months since I acquired this volume). Thankfully, I finally read it! It was still an enjoyable read, but it's probably the weakest volume out of the three. The ending was also a bit anticlimactic. I, however, did really like that Willa and Edison became official. That was really cute. Overall, it was a fine conclusion that made sure there were no loose ends....more
