Was her husband (who recently died) have an affair with Pauline? Why is she in town? Why does Pauline have a photo of Phoebe in her pocket? All of these questions lead Phoebe on a wild investigation to find the truth.
The story was a pretty quick read, great for my road trip! I highly recommend this book!

At times, I felt like I didn't know what was going on. But, I was able to figure it out enough that the story was very good. I enjoyed reading it.
The story moved along at a good pace, had a couple of unexpected twists. The end, after the mystery was solved, was kind of slow.
I would read another book by Sarah A. Denzil. ...more

I founTold from three different children's viewpoints, this story was loosely based on the children's murders of the late 70's/early 80's in Atlanta. I found it fascinating to be from the viewpoint of children. It illustrated how panicked and afraid they were during that time in history.
I picked the book up thinking it would give more details about the crimes or about the investigation, or about the victims. It was not historical fiction. The characters were fictional, and it was not meant to be a blow by blow account of the crimes. I liked the author's writing, but it just wasn't what I expected it to be.
I will definitely look for other books by this author....more

I had mixed feelings about this book. It was a cute, light read while I was on vacation, but it wasn't one of my favorites.
I felt like the story and romance was forced. Why would you choose someone from a different era over someone who loves you and you love in the here and now. I felt like the main character treated her long time friend in current times like crap while she was pining away from someone she might never be able to be with.
I liked some of the book, but some of it I was just reading to be able to finish the book. I read this through the Once Upon a Book Club book subscription and it had gifts to open on certain pages. I liked it, but didn't love it. ...more

She hated him, she liked him, hated him, liked him, loved him, hated him. He was the same way. You knew from the very beginning that they both had issues, but I just didn't like how the story was developing. The story was told from his and her perspectives, and I didn't like that either.
I also didn't like that one of the characters was a boy who wore dresses and they thought that was ok. They were shocked when he was teased when he went to school wearing dresses and decided the answer for the boy was to let him stay home and be homeschooled. It seems that part was just thrown in there, especially the part where it said the boy still identifies with a he pronoun, but is leaving his options open because that could change.
The family was way over the top on the environment, spirituality (or lack thereof), magic, etc. I didn't find any of the characters to be very appealing. Moving on.
Note: It seems that more and more of OUABC's book choices include LGBTQ+ characters. If you are looking for more conservative books, be careful of their book subscription....more

In this novel, Jess Morgan finds a trunk full of her aunt's old diaries written in Russian. She hires a college-age guy to translate the journals and they enter into a long investigation as to whether he aunt could really be the lost Romanov princess. As she struggles to understand her aunt and the diaries she left behind, she struggles to know and understand her true self.
I really enjoyed the story, the mystery of Anastasia has always fascinated me. It was written in a very interesting way. I thought the thrown-in gay characters could have been left out as they added nothing to the story line other than being an attempt to say there were gays in the book. Another attempt to normalize it. They were not main characters and were only mentioned a couple of times.
I liked Jess' romance story and her journey of self-discovery. ...more

I couldn't put the book down! The author did a wonderful job of researching and turning real life events into this story. The story was one of bravery, horror, and heartbreak. It is unfathomable that these experiments were performed and even worse that so many Nazis were allowed to escape justice after the war because of the knowledge other countries, including the United States, wanted to obtain from them. It's sick.
In the aftermath of World War II, a young woman discovers that the father she adored was responsible for horrific things that had happened in the concentration camp near their home. She learned that all the things she had been taught at school and in her girls' club were wrong. She began to learn the truth of what the Nazis in her country had been doing.
This book will really make you think about the role governments play in our lives, how leaders can horribly change the philosophies of the people, how misled people can be, and how justice is not always exacted on those that are guilty of the worst offenses....more

What a lesson in how people were able to make it across the prairie! Times were so hard, people literally risked their lives to make it. It was very moving to me to learn that this book was based on actual people and that many of them were the author's own ancestors.
I loved the relationships that were slowly developed. This was a slow-burn and I enjoyed taking my time unraveling the story....more
