I read the author's first two books and really enjoyed them so was excited to read this one. Even though it is not horror like I expected it's probably my favorite from this author. It was so good.
Like I said I was expecting horror when I started this book, but it really isn't. It is the story of Miles and how he and his family try and survive in this small town. It was an odd time capsule book as it is set in 2017, so right after Trump won the election and became president. I loved all the talk surrounding that and the people who live there and just all of it. It was such a great read and all of this discourse fit into the story.
I found it really interesting to read Miles's views on living in this small town with Trumpers all around. I grew up in a similar small town and I pretty much have the opposite views from Miles on some of this stuff. For example I couldn't wait to leave and did as soon as I could, whereas he loves his town and doesn't think the awful people should be able to run him out of town. I loved reading all of that. Love seeing the opposite perspective on things. I agree with all the big things, love all the identity talk and trying to fit in, but interesting seeing other views on some of this stuff.
So yeah, this was a great read. All about trying to survive in a poor, small town. Miles was a great character and I loved watching him try and figure out how to keep him and his family safe. It was wonderful. And the side characters were just as great to read. Really wonderful book and I can't wait for more from this author!

At first I thought it wouldn't be my favorite, it didn't start off with a really creepy scene, or at least not as much as I had expected from this author. So I thought that's fine, I rarely love everything from an author and maybe this is the one I am just meh on.
Only I kept reading and after a few chapters I couldn't put it down. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. This one actually might be my favorite of the three. It is the story of a cop returning to her hometown after her daughter was kidnapped (and everyone involved in that). She has to try and remember what happened back then and figure out what is happening now to save her. There are a lot of moving parts, a lot of stuff in the past and present that were really fun to read. There is a creepy cult that I loved and just some of the idea were really interesting. Trying to figure out how it all fit together and why everything was happening was really great. Some of the scenes, just like the author's prior books, were so imaginative and interesting and creepy. I loved it. Such a great read. I don't want to say much more as I don't want to spoil anything, but if you are a fan of this author definitely check it out. If not it is a good place to start.

When I saw Cinderella, but she is an eldritch monster I thought yes! Sounds amazing! And luckily this story did not disappoint.
This story is told from the point of view of Eunice, the elder of Cinderella's stepsisters. I loved how it felt like a children's story at first, how it is YA feeling (which makes sense as it is a fairy tale/told from a teenager's POV), but it gets really gross. It does have most of the things you would associate with Cinderella, the mice, the chores, the pumpkin turned stagecoach, etc but they are all so wonderfully disgusting I loved it. There were a couple of parts towards the end that were so gross I turned away for a moment which I don't know that I have done before. I was amazing.
Really this is the story of if there was a reason why the stepsisters/stepmother did everything they did for a good reason. There are rules for Cinderella and oh, it was wonderful. I loved how it ended as well. This is the author's first book so I can't wait to see what they come up with next!

And the whole set up of the book, the first part, was so flimsy and didn't really make much sense, but I was enjoying reading it and wanted to see where it would go so it didn't bother me too much. I'm not going to go into too much detail as I don't want to spoil anything, but overall it was a fun read.
I will say our main character was not the brightest, but she tried. There was a reveal about halfway through the book that I didn't expect, but was also not surprising, and right after that I feel like the story got so much better even if it was painfully obvious what was going on. But then again I wanted fun adventures out in the snow and ice, which is what I got! The first part felt like it wanted to be a romance, but didn't really work as one (the whole romance subplot was not great in general, but not the worst I have read so I went with it). I do have questions about Samir during the second half of the book because what was going on with him didn't make much sense to me, but I again just went with it. I went with a lot of stuff because even though it didn't make sense it was still fun to read.
Now this book was fun, but I gave it a lower score because the ending was way too quick and too easily tied up in a bow. Like some of the characters there is no way they that easily changed into completely different people or just trusted others in no time. Like...it takes time if that is going to happen. And some things are unforgivable. But like everything else I just said sure. Fine. I don't love this, but it wasn't the worst read either. I ended the book feeling like that was fine. I would be curious to read more from the author and see if I enjoy his other stories more.

When I started reading this I definitely got Rosemary's Baby vibes which is great as I love that story. Then it kind of turned into Rosemary's Baby with all the same details of things happening which was odd, but I didn't mind too much. Like it could have been a fun, updated sequel to that book almost which I liked. So I wasn't that surprised when I got to the end and saw that the author wanted to write a gothic in the vein of Rosemary's Baby. But it went downhill from about the mid-way point for me.
This is the story of Emma and Sam, Sam who has just married Ben and is hoping that her life will be good and happy from now on. That Ben really is as great as he seems and she can leave her horrible past behind. And Emma her daughter whose life is going to be uprooted when they all move. Only Ben's mom has an accident while they are on their honeymoon and they have to go back to his hometown to help take care of her. A small island community where weird things start happening.
I did really love the first part of this book and was ready to recommend it to everyone. It was just fun to read and I loved the writing. But as I said as it progressed Emma's thought processes got to be really annoying. Like if you know weird, bad things are going on why would you just trust the people who are being weird? I did not get it and it was very frustrating to read. I know she is young, but still. So unfortunately I was left with a very meh feeling overall. I would be interested in reading another of the author's books since I did enjoy the first half so much.

The writing style wasn't working for me, it was like I was reading someone telling me a story that was like Leave it to Beaver or the Andy Griffith Show, but with more not great/offensive language. Including the N-word which is a no for me. I wasn't jelling with it anyways, seemed more like a coming of age story, but maybe it gets spookier as you go along.

I know I am in the minority, but the grief didn't feel real? I know everyone deals with things differently, but the way this was written it was like I was told they were grieving and doing x and y, but didn't really believe it. I don't know. It is obviously just me since all the other reviews, even the low star ones, say how realistic the grieving was in the book. I lost my sister fairly recently and suddenly so the death of a sibling should have resonated somewhat, but it didn't work. Oh well, glad others found good in it for them.

This is the story of Silas, an autistic trans boy in the 1800's. The veil between the living and the dead has become thinner and people with purple eyes can make a hole in it and do things in both worlds. But only men are allowed to do that of course. Silly little women are too fragile and are just for making babies obviously. So with Silas being a trans boy and that not at all being allowed (his parents are going to force him to marry some old guy soon and get started on the baby making) he is trying to figure out his escape. How he can live his life the way he wants to. How he can be safe. Of course his plans go awry and he gets sent to this school to learn how to be a proper lady and wife.
I really enjoyed this one. I loved watching Silad try and figure out what is really going on at this school while also meeting some people who are like him! Where he is seen for the first time. He has never had that before and I loved the interactions there. There is some pretty horrible stuff that happens, the one scene with the lady who runs the school is a lot in the best of ways, but so are a lot of the things really. And the ending was so satisfying (and I would love to read another book where the story continues. That would be so much fun!).
