Il sistema di detenzione carceraria non funziona. Non sono opinioni. Leggendo questo volumetto, chiaro, semplice e scorrevole, ci si persuade che il sistema carcerario non giova a nessuno. Non giova a chi in carcere ci lavora (il corpo di polizia penitenziaria è quello con maggior tasso di suicidi); non giova ai detenuti (il 70% all'uscita dal carcere torna a delinquere) e non giova a chi è fuori dal carcere (i costi per mantenere tale sistema sono altissimi e non si aumenta la sicurezza data l'alta percentuale di recidiva). Il volume, scevro da opinioni "buoniste" o garantiste, spiega, alla luce di dati, analisi oggettive e confronti con diverse realtà , che il carcere è inutile in quanto non assolve a nessuna delle funzioni per le quali è stato pensato. Il carcere, oltre ad essere inumano, non riabilita e non aumenta la sicurezza. Il superamento del carcere è possibile, anzi, è necessario. Il superamento del carcere non è un'utopia. Molte sono le pene alternative, compresi diversi strumenti di detenzione. D'altronde molte esperienze, in Europa e nel Mondo, vanno in questa direzione. Ed, in fondo, anche l'abolizione della schiavitù o la chiusura dei manicomi apparivano irrealizzabili.
