It is an excellent comic tale in the world of the reality TV show (some would say talent show). It's a very satirical view of the whole Pop Idol/ X Factor thing. I should point out here that I really do despise these kind of programmes as I believe they are what will eventually kill the music industry However, that aside this is a hilarious story with some great characters, some of whom to me seem very much based on some of the judges of the UK's pop Idol and X Factor. There are some real laugh out loud moments and an excellent twist at the end which really took me by surprise. I will definitely read more of Mr Elton's work...more
Having been an avid reader of the NME for nearly 40 years I love to read the published works of anyone who has worked on that august journal. Mr MaconHaving been an avid reader of the NME for nearly 40 years I love to read the published works of anyone who has worked on that august journal. Mr Maconie worked there for some time (as did Andrew Collins - check out his books too)
This book also covers a similar period in the UK when I grew up, although Stuart Maconie is slightly younger than me
It is at times incredibly funny and delivers a great insight into the way a music paper operates. There are some great anecdotes about a number of starts too, my favourites of which were Stuart's time with Mick Hucknall, Napalm Death and Mark E Smith, not all at the same time though!
So if you like Maconie, the NME or indeed music I think you'll enjoy this book...more

It's very cleverly written and who knows perhaps it's true ;-)
It is a little gory in places and often weird, but that is what I loved about it. For anyone who hasn't read Clive Barker before this is perhaps not the place to start but anyone who has read his work before will almost certainly enjoy it...more

Anyone Having read a lot of Mr Moore's stuff and enjoyed the movies I think I knew what to expect with this book and I certainly wasn't disappointed. Anyone eligible to vote in the US Elections (I'm a Brit so I can't) should read this book
I agree with a lot of Mike's views, however that for me isn't the point. The point is really that people should make an educated decision when voting not just follow what they or their parents have always done. For me it is also important that evryone eligible actually votes, if you don't then why do you have a right to complain if the wrong person gets in
Finally in my opinion I would hope that my neighbours across the big pond make the right decision in November. ...more
It's hard to believe that this is a first novel, it is a very well accomplished book, I can see me becoming an Andrew Davidson fan over time.
What I loIt's hard to believe that this is a first novel, it is a very well accomplished book, I can see me becoming an Andrew Davidson fan over time.
What I loved most about the Gargoyle is that it is so hard to categorise. It is a love story, an adventure story, a supernatural thriller, a horror tale (perhaps?) and there are many heart wrenching and indeed comedic moments in the book.
The characters are all very well developed and the parallels and use of Dante's Inferno have kicked my curiosity into overdrive in a desire to read it
I was given the opportunity to read this as part of a Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ giveaway and having read it I would certainly go out and buy the next Andrew Davidson novel
I urge you to read this book I cannot believe anyone would be disappointed with it...more

I happened to spot this while queuing in the Library for a book about Vincent Van Gogh (hopefully more of that in another post sometime).
The principle of this book, er sorry graphic novel, is great. It follows the life of a photographer from the late thirties to more modern times and his career is built around taking pictures of most of the heroes and villains in the Marvel Universe. Everyone from the Avengers, Spiderman, X Men, Galactus, Silver Surfer, Doctor Doom to my absolute favourites the Fantastic Four
The artwork is excellent and there is also a great section on how the series came to be, which includes many scripts and sketches
If you love Marvel and you haven't read this then go and read it............ now!!!...more

I'm really glad I took the trouble to read it eventually. I have learnt many things from it, in particular how it is often the simple things that are actually the Tipping Points in life. I also understand where I fit in the whole concept, well at least I think I do. I don't want to say much about the theories in the big as I think it's best that reader discovers that for themselves
But it is an excellent book and well worth reading...more
