Quote-Core:
“Pity those who don't feel anything at all.

Summary for those who don’t have any intentions to read my fangirling-parade:

The book is really good, its flaws aren't bigger than its great sides. You may give it a try, but there’s no guarantee you’ll love it. One of the most important things within the high-fantasy genre is world-building, and I have to admit Sarah did well: the Fae realm is beautiful and quite unique. Characters are complex, the language is rich, there are emotional moments. The final is predictable, ‘cause c’mon, this is a retelling, BUT an intrigue is still there. It's a fast read, also this book has its own melody like a song. The conclusion of the story was logical and complete (there are gonna be sequels, but you can consider this one as a standalone if you please).

Now, here's the part for those who don’t like dry-texts and ready for more.

After a painful experience with boring like hell Heir of Fire, I wasn't eager to read SJM's new work called A Court of Thorns and Roses, but GR attacked me with praising reviews and alluring status-updates for this book, so here I am...

Yes, here I am, despite the fact that some of my friends, whose opinion I can rely on, had tipped me that ACOTAR is a super average read. Opinions differ after all, right? I decided to give SJM a chance minding potential plot-holes and holding on to whatifs. What I was warned about? MC was supposed to be pretty crazy, plot - static, boredom - all around, hot scenes and male-leads - acceptable.

"Well", I thought. "That's totally fine. Let's go."

What did I get? Not a dull moment (okay, maybe a few), no stupidity in the MC (okay, maybe a bit), no dragging plot (yes, no dragging plot).

Okay, let’s start from the start. Once upon a time there was a rich family (which surname I forgot or didn’t know to begin with): a merchant-dad, a soon-to-be-dead-mother, and their children. After the mother's death, this family lost their fortune, 'cause a good merchant must know better than to invest all the money in a risky deal. Creditors took everything that was left, including their house. Also, they broke the father's knee (remember this fact).

Disabled man and his daughters moved to a small village. The father couldn't work, 'cause he had a bad KNEE (that's just me or a man can be a merchant even with such a 'horrible disability'???), so in the short run three sisters found out what hunger and poverty are. Fortunately, Feyre, the youngest, saved them from starvation and cold by becoming a huntress. Why did she do this? The dying Mom did ask her to swear that she would take care of the father and sisters no matter what. Yes, a grown-up woman with brains took an oath from a 8-year-old girl to feed a healthy (back then) man plus two older and educated (unlike Feyre) chicks. WHAT DA FUCK?

That's why Feyre had started to hunt as long as she turned 14. She had to kill cute animals instead of painting them. The girl adored to paint, but one can't eat her arts...

The book would begin with Feyre being nineteen, fornicating with a local golden boy and still providing for her family. Feyre's relatives don't try to help her but have no problems with taking her money and asking for more. Winter. Lazy folk hasn't eaten for a while and Feyre is wandering through the forest searching for anything to shoot. She’s desperate and tired, and then she notices a deer. But her dreams about dinner get interrupted by a huge wolf. "Faerie", thinks the girl. Then looks closer. "Not a faerie". Then shoots. With an ash-arrow. Just in case. 'Cause only this thing can kill faeries, so she heard. After being done with the wolf, she kills the deer and takes the skin of the first and the corpse of the second home. All is good! Feyre gets enough money in exchange for the wolf's skin while venison would save her family from starvation. But suddenly a lion-ish-wolf-ish beast breaks into Feyre's house, the creature is hairy, tusky, and really pissed off. It says, “Come with me or I'll tear you to shreds. What a nice choice.

Okay, let me tell you about the world this beast is coming from. Once upon a time humans and fairies were living without barriers. As rulers and slaves, where people were slaves. Then an epic-battle had happened and faeries left humans be: they created a wall between their paradise and human’s trash-lands. It’s been centuries since that moment and now people hardly remember their history. Some see Fae as Nazi, some as gods. Ptythian, Fae-realm, is shared between seven Courts: Dawn, Day, Night, Winter, Autumn, Summer, and Spring. Hairy-thing came from the last one and right there it was going to take Feyre.

What Feyre expected? Dark dungeons, torture chambers, sex orgies. What she’s got? A room with a garden view, silks and jewels, cakes, and two hot men in addition. Where the men came from? The first from the beast, the second turned out to be his palace-mate.

Btw, all the subjects of Spring Court wear masks. Why? Tamlin (the kidnapper) said there's a magic blight that is sucking powers from every creature of his Court and doesn't allow them to take off masks. This decease has a weird sense of humor and smells like... curse!

So, landlords are treating Feyre as their dear guest, even trying to say some compliments, like “Your hair is clean, “Your eyes are right on your face and so on. Lucien is a king of sarcasm (this is the second hot thing living in the palace). Readers love him. Me too. He’s snarky, has a brute scar and dark charisma. He’s fiery-red-haired, BTW. After Rene Hasard from Rook, I got fond of such “torches. As to Tamlin, he’s Apollo-like (of course) and hot as the lava of Eyjafjallajokull volcano. I know, he wears a mask, but the tiny thing hardly hides anything. We can’t see his nose and brow, that's not a big deal. Lips (sensual) and eyes (green) are in sight.

From time to time our beauty-beast is annoying Feyre with “let’s go for a walk, “let’s have a chat, “what’s up?, “what are you thinking about? and suchlike things. Lucien is teasing her endlessly. And Feyre herself is waiting for the only one thing: to go home and get back to her Dobby-lifestyle.

But all it’s not what it seems.

A head-on a stick, deadly dangerous monsters, faerie with ripped wings, night hallucinations, LSD-wine Prythian is one hell of a place! What is waiting for Feyre? Who will leave a love bite on her neck? What kind of trails will lay on its scrawny human shoulders? This and more are on the pages of “A Court of Thorns and Roses. Sounds like a commercial jingle)

Ah, well, how could I forget! Erotica! Maas is awesome, really. Minimum anatomy, maximum feelings.

The writing. “The Heir of Fire was a challenge for me to read. Its language was rich but had no rhythm. The ACOTAR’s writing is so much better. I can see through the author's words that she’s a very intelligent person. I like how she expresses herself, what kind of metaphors she uses, the way her imagination works. Her story is upon words, it consists of pure feelings, images, and emotions.

Off-topic. I've heard ACOTAR was a fan-fiction work, which Maas had been posting on a site, and the story existed before Throne of Glass (though the idea of ToG is older). Those who have read ToG would notice what kind of luggage Sarah moved from ACOTAR to ToG. Two guys: the first is a prince/king/lord; the second is a I-could-be-a-prince/king/lord/-but-I-had-left-my-kingdom-and-decided-to-live-with-my-friend-also-my-family-is-awful. One killer-girl (huntress/assassin) with a girlish hobby (painting/reading). Relationships from hate to love. Trials. War. Slavery. Fae-mythology. Amarantha is a prototype of Maeve, Rhysand of Rowen, mountain king of Adarlan's one, and so on. Maybe Sarah had no intention to be back to ACOTAR while working on ToG, that's why she took so much from her older story. I wasn't irritated, though, 'cause ACOTAR's version is better, IMO.

PS: Tamlin is hot, but he's not my favorite male-lead. Lucien is awesome, but my heart isn't his either. Who took it? That's simple...

(view spoiler)

And I can't wait for the next book!

“You look . . . better than before."
Was that a compliment? I could have sworn Lucien gave Tamlin an encouraging nod.

“He brought his lips to my ear. "I would have been gentle with you, though." I shuddered as I closed my eyes. Every inch of my body went taut as his words echoed through me. "I would have had you moaning my name throughout it all. And I would have taken a very, very long time, Feyre.”

“Do you ever stop being so serious and dull?"
"Do you ever stop being such a prick?" I snapped back.
Dead—really, truly, I should have been dead for that.
But Lucien grinned at me. "Much better.”

Sarah J. Maas
“Well, good-bye for now," he said, rolling his neck as if we hadn't been talking about anything important at all. He bowed at the waist, those wings vanishing entirely, and had begun to fade into the nearest shadow when he went rigid.
His eyes locked on mine wide and wild, and his nostrils flared. Shock—pure shock flashed across his features at whatever he saw on my face, and he stumbled back a step. Actually stumbled.
"What is" I began.
He disappeared—simply disappeared, not a shadow in sight—into the crisp air.”

“When you healed my arm...You didn't need to bargain with me. You could have demanded every single week of the year." My brows knit together as he turned, already half-consumed by the dark. "Every single week, and I would have said yes." It wasn't entirely a question, but I needed the answer.
A half smile appeared on his sensuous lips. "I know," he said, and vanished.”

“What have you done to me?"
Rhysand stood, running a hand through his short, dark hair. It's custom in my court for bargains to be permanently marked upon flesh."
I rubbed my left forearm and hand, the entirety of which was now covered in swirls and whorls of black ink. Even my fingers weren't spared, and a large eye was tattooed in the center of my palm. It was feline, and its slitted pupil stared right back me.
"Make it go away," I said, and he laughed.
"You humans are truly grateful creatures, aren't you?”
Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Thorns and Roses

Sarah J. Maas
“I stared at the nose I'd seen bleeding only hours before, the violet eyes that had been so filled with pain. "Why?" I asked.
He knew what I meant, and shrugged. "Because when the legends get written, I didn't want to be remembered for standing on the sidelines. I want my future offspring to know that I was there, and that I fought against her at the end, even if I couldn't do anything useful."
I blinked, this time not at the brightness of the sun.
"Because," he went on, his eyes locked with mine, "I didn't want you to fight alone. Or die alone."
And for a moment, I remembered that faerie who had died in our foyer, and how I'd told Tamlin the same thing. "Thank you," I said, my throat tight.
Rhys flashed a grin that didn't quite reach his eyes. " I doubt you'll be saying that when I take you to the Night Court.”

“You didn't tell me this would happen."
"You didn't ask. So how am I to blame?”
Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Thorns and Roses

Sarah J. Maas
“Her magic sent him sprawling, and it then hurled into Rhysand again - so hard that his head cracked against the stones and the knife dropped from his splayed fingers. No one made a move to help him, and she struck him once more with her power. The red marble splintered where he hit it, spiderwebbing toward me. With wave after wave she hit him. Rhys groaned.
"Stop," I breathed, blood filling my mouth as I strained a hand to reach her feet. "Please."
Rhys's arms buckled as he fought to rise, and blood dripped from his nose, splattering on the marble. His eyes met mine.
The bond between us went taut. I flashed between my body and his, seeing myself through his eyes, bleeding and broken and sobbing.
I snapped back into my own mind as Amarantha turned to me again. "Stop? Stop? Don't pretend you care, human," she crooned, and curled her finger. I arched my back, my spine straining to the point of cracking, and Rhysand bellowed my name as I lost my grip on the room.”
Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Thorns and Roses

Sarah J. Maas
There are those who seek me a lifetime but never we meet,
And those I kiss but who trample me beneath ungrateful feet.

At times I seem to favor the clever and the fair,
But I bless all those who are brave enough to dare.

By large, my ministrations are soft-handed and sweet,
But scorned, I become a difficult beast to defeat.

For though each of my strikes lands a powerful blow,
When I kill, I do it slow...

Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Thorns and Roses

Sarah J. Maas
“I love you, he whispered, and kissed my brow. ‘Thorns and all.”

Sarah J. Maas
“Because all the monsters have been let out of their cages tonight, no matter what court they belong to. So I may roam wherever I wish until the dawn.”
Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Thorns and Roses

Sarah J. Maas
“His tunic was unbuttoned at the top, and he ran a hand through his blue-black hair before he wordlessly slumped against the wall across from me and slid to the floor.
"What do you want?" I demanded.
"A moment of peace and quiet," he snapped, rubbing his temples.
I paused. "From what?"
He massaged his pale skin, making the corners of his eyes go up and down, out and in. He sighed. "From this mess."
I sat up farther on my pallet of the hay. I'd never seen him so candid.
"That damned bitch is running me ragged," he went on, and dropped his hands from his temples to lean his head against the wall. "You hate me. Imagine how you'd feel if I made you serve in my bedroom. I'm High Lord of the Night Court - not her harlot."
So the slurs were true. And I could imagine very easily how much I would hate him - what it would do to me - to be enslaved to someone like that. "Why are you telling me this?"
The swagger and nastiness were gone. "Because I'm tired and lonely, and you're the only person I can talk to without putting myself at risk." He let out a low laugh. "How absurd: a High Lord of Prythian and a - "
"You can leave if you're just going to insult me."
"But I'm so good at it". He flashed one of his grins. I glared at him, but he sighted. "One wrong move tomorrow, Freyre, and we're all doomed.”
Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Thorns and Roses

Sarah J. Maas
“Would you like me to grovel with gratitude for bringing me here, High Lord?"

"Ah. The Suriel told you nothing important, did it?"

That smile of his sparked something bold in my chest. "He also said that you liked being brushed, and if I'm a clever girl, I might train you with treats."

Tamlin tipped his head to the sky and roared with laughter. Despite myself, I let out a quiet laugh.

"I might die of surprise," Lucien said behind me. "You made a joke, Feyre."

I turned to look at him with a cool smile. "You don't want to know what the Suriel said about you." I flicked my brows up, and Lucien lifted his hands in defeat.

"I'd pay good money to hear what the Suriel thinks of Lucien," Tamlin said.

A cork popped, followed by the sounds of Lucien chugging the bottle's contents and chuckling with a muttered, "Brushed.”
Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Thorns and Roses

Sarah J. Maas
“Thus I became Rhysand's plaything, the harlot of Amarantha's whore.”
Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Thorns and Roses

Sarah J. Maas
“Alis’s lips thinned, but she said, “The next time that fool Lucien gives you advice on how to trap the Suriel, you come to me. Dead chickens, my sagging ass. All you needed to do was offer it a new robe, and it would have groveled at your feet.”

Nastassja Wow, intriguing but let me guess... maybe your heart belongs to... Rhysand? I have to admit that in this book is a lot of sexy males - more than should be allowed by law)))

Katerina Kondrenko I knew you'd guess right! I ADORE this character) I'll write a whole essay about Rhys *__*
ps: yup, too much wow-men! not that I didn't like it xDD

Didn't you know I am a mind reader ^_~ I have a feeling there's going to be more Rhys in the next book and I am definitely in his team (if I ever decide to read the next book, I'll wait for your Rhys essay and see if it'll convince me to read the next part))

Pang Life is Hectic again, Wait for me!! Yay! :D (view spoiler)

I haven't thought about it until you mentioned it and now... I need the book #2 like yesterday!)

Nastassja I am convinced again - you are an AMAZING reviewer!!! Such a hilarious review, I was driving in the car while reading it and couldn't stop laughing, people around me started giving me funny looks:D You are my only friend who writes reviews in both languages and also very good at it. You deserve all the best praise for your work, Katerina \(^_^)/

Nastassja Actually till your review I haven't thought about Rhys as someone resembling Raffe but now I see some semblance) But of course he has to proof worthy of this comparison:DD Can't wait for dose of your awesomeness in your english review;)

BTW! Have you seen what Pang thinks about Rhys? If so... I'd beg Sarah to write faster the next book. Can't wait)

Katerina Kondrenko Oh, and he like Raffe place his bets on MC when she was fighting)

Nastassja Well, I will not change my mind and fall in love with this book, but I definitely LOVE your review xD This idea with true mate is very interesting and I'm all in for this to be true *Tam growling and snarling and swishing talons desperately* Ha, get it, sucker!!!

Lily-Rose I love this review so much, I cannot get enough of your fangirling...I mean i read this in May and I still can't get over it! Not going to lie I love all your reviews tho...

I cannot agree more with your Rhys perspective, like sure Tamlin's hot but the whole first half I was like, "Wheres my dark haired, problematic fave going to come and shake some shit up"...also totally feeling the Raffe comparison! Tbh I reckon there totally love triangle possibly too; I mean S.J Maas's whole pinterest board is like Feyre x Rhys...no Tamlin...hmmm ;)

Katerina Kondrenko I reread this review and found a looot of grammar-mistakes xDD Seems like I was really exciting and crazy while writing the text.

I watched Sarah's interview where she was praising Rhys and now I have no doubts, he would get a girl and I'm dying to see it. Oh my... there was only one stolen kiss with him i ACOTAR and I was already on fire. Can't imagine what it would be like to read his and Feyre sex-scene)

OMG? It's like a massive (sort of) hint for book 2! I follow the goodreads discussion thread, the one called "What do you think of the ending with Rysand?" or something, and it has like a TON of awesome pro-rhys theories about the next book. Someone found a blurb that I think was on amazon or something...here it is:

After rescuing her lover Tamlin from the wicked Faerie Queen, Feyre returns to the Spring Court, immortal and possessing the powers of the High Fae. But even at the start of her new life she cannot escape her harrowing past - she owes a debt to the dangerous and alluring High Lord Rhysand, and on her wedding day he claims her for his dreaded Night Court.

As Feyre is drawn ever deeper into the Court and life with its seductive master, war is looming on the horizon - a war that threatens to destroy everything Feyre has fought for. Only she can end the encroaching evil, but to do so she must confront her past, embrace her powers, and discover her heart's true desire .

Doesn't it just make you want to like jump up and down, honestly May is too far awayyyyyyy!!

Katerina Kondrenko ...she owes a debt to the dangerous and alluring High Lord Rhysand, and on her wedding day he claims her for his dreaded Night Court

\(O_O)/, the only word "claim" is already sexy enough to blow my mind in this context))

And myyyyy gooood, I need this book now. It sounds so awesome! Rhys (@_@)

anjuli I was ever so curious about the ending too. What did he SEE that he had a look of horror on his face. I cannot think. I'm not sure about the mate thing that you guys are talking about though? I didn't know Fae's could "see" mate like that? I don't know my brain is too full right now lol.

Katerina Kondrenko I don't no for sure either) I'm ready for everything, but what I feel and sense from Sarah's interviews and Q&As is how she's rooting for Rhys herself. It gives me hope)

anjuli Oh ok. I haven't read the interviews etc. so I have no idea. I guess it makes sense with her style if we consider her ToG series ;)

Katerina Kondrenko Uh-huh, I think her tastes have change while writing ACOTAR and then she decided to improve Queen of Shadows and she's totally in immortal hot guys team) What can be sexier? Immortal hot guy with a dark side of his!)

Giulia This is the perfect review for this book, Kat! :D I'm with you about Rhysand. Yeah, I like Tamlin, but... Rhys is still Rhys.

message 50: by Brittney (new)

Brittney Arena Sooo I'm with you... Rhys, pretty please :) but after reading some theories... I'm legit concerned that he realized at the end of COTAR that Feyre shares his blood. Agggghhhh!!! Please counteract this theory :(

(I'm glad I'm not the only one with a serious soft spot for dark babies)
