DNF @ 181 Pages

I thought I was gonna love this so much that I spent years trolling my favorite used book stores to find excellent quality hardcover copies of the whole series. Meaning: I own the WHOLE series. And seriously wasted my time. Which makes this even more of a bummer.

This was just SOOOOOOO incredibly boring.

I read 181 pages of this...and 150 of that was probably about wine, tea, wine, architecture, tea, Oxford, wine, tea, gross under-cooked food, wine, tea...hey, did I mention there was a lot of waxing poetic about wine and tea?

description

I saw that mentioned in other people's reviews and just figured they were kinda, sorta joking. But no. No, they were not. And I am sorry for doubting you, friends.

But anyway, I take solace in the fact that I no longer buy entire series before making sure I actually like book one. I also like knowing that, hey, while not my ideal manner, at least I can scratch another three books off my ridiculous physical tbr list AND create some more wiggle room on my shelves.

Beth Crap. I have had this audio on hold on the library app. for about five months! I’m still gonna try I think when I get it.

Madia M Wise. I tried to DNF 2/3 of the way in but then the stupid in me took over and I finished it...😐

Hey, lots of people liked this and maybe the audio will make it more interesting. I hope you love it :)

E.S. Hazard Thank you for the warning.

Yodamom I bought the HC felt the same started it, and DNF'd it after a 100 pages. So disappointed.

message 7: by Olivia (new)

Olivia Also DNF it was so damn boring

🌙 Moontouched Baby 🌙 I totally feel you my friend. This book was soooo boring and slow. The author wants to describe every single detail of every room. I knew this book was not for me when the author spent a couple pages talking about rugs and architecture.

Cayote_ You forgot the rowing sis. The endless rowing.

message 10: by Susy (new)

Susy YES! I felt so alone out here in the DNF land! I thought it was so boring too!

Yes. Yes, I did lol...cause SO much rowing. And running. And rowing, rowing, rowing...

Mirta Well, congrats, you only miss the vampire guy being a manipulative and controlling dick and the protagonist becoming the new Bella Swan 😅 DNF after the second book

TinaMarie The following books get a little better but have the same problems as this first book

Holly Oh no! I am so sad you already bought the entire series. This was, in my opinion, the best book of the series. And that's saying something because I didn't particularly like this book. Definitely sell them and enjoy the new room on your shelf!

Crystal Oh, wow! Great review. I remember starting this book years ago but DNF because I just couldn't get into it. I had hoped I could "try again" to see if I felt different the second time around because SO MANY people love this book and the series.

Paulette Sad! This is actually one of my favorite series! I also have an obsession with vampires and really enjoy the scientific history intertwined throughout the series. Eh, guess it isn’t for everyone 🤷🏾‍♀

Yeah, I thought I would love it too. Super bummed.

I too love vampires and science...this was just not for me.

Eliza i felt the same way. I wanted to love it soooo much. Its like they took all the ingredients for a great cake... but came up with mud. I would pick this up and slog through a couple chapters, and then sit it down for weeks. Just never finished it. On a lighter note, I love the Sundance TV show based on the books. But that's just because Matthew Goode is kinda dreamy.

Yeah....I tried watching the show and couldn't make it either lol

Jess The Bookworm I've never bought the second book because I read such bad reviews for the 2nd one. So I'm sorry that you have the whole series already. I made the mistake of buying a whole series that I didn't love this year too. The problem is, if you love the first one, you don't want to wait to dive into the next one. Catch 22 for sure.

Elisa Glendenning Your review was hilarious and oh so true (unfortunately, I DID buy the entire series, before reading #1) 😭

I did also, Elisa... :)

Yeah, I used to but entire series when I saw them on sale, etc. but now I only buy book one no matter what lol

Sarah Johnson Omg. Please sit down and read it. It is amazing. I promise.

Maybe I’ll try again someday....but not any time soon.

Jenna It only gets worse, good thing you stopped when you did.

Somia Ditto I was so shocked at how much I couldn't get into this one.

Vallsykes I did the audiobooks, for the most part, though I have all on my kindle. Anywhoo, LOL, I don't remember pages and pages about wine, but I love wine so I might be biased, LOL. I do remember some of the character POV pivots and dialogue/streams of consciousness being TEDIOUS, and so I skimmed 20% of the first and second books, but the third one, I got through more smoothly and I absolutely loved the third book and surprisingly wanted more.

I have really enjoyed the series adaptation...a lot, a lot!
(always great getting your take on it)

Vallsykes Paulette wrote: "Sad! This is actually one of my favorite series! I also have an obsession with vampires and really enjoy the scientific history intertwined throughout the series. Eh, guess it isn’t for everyone 🤷🏾‍♀"

I agree. I will include the bit about the scientific history in my review of the third book that wraps up the trilogy.

Bookish I can always rely on you to provide the truth on these things. I watched the first season of the series inspired by the books and was like "I should read these". Now I know all the wine and tea drinking in the tv series is actually a shout out to the book 😂

I LOVE wine too, but...lol Oh well. Yes, i will definitely try the TV series. Love Teresa Palmer :)

Denise Thanks you just saved me $14.99 . I started watching the series and thought I might try the book, but a little steep for kindle prices IMO. I’ll stick with the tv series for now.

Happy to be helpful!

Kim This is one of the rare times where I'll suggest to maybe watch the TV series based on the books first. I love this book series but can see how some may not like the pace that the author sets.

Holly If it makes you feel better, the amount of wine/tea only gets significantly worse after where you quit.
