really liked it
bookshelves: memoir, graphic-novel

My first graphic novel. While I can't say this is the form I like to read in, it was a compelling look at gender. It has to take a lot of talent to write a memoir in such a way. In fact, this could have been my memoir, as I related to it so much. Liz Prince, while born a girl, does not fit into the typical "girl" stereotypes. Liz is a tomboy, who's first memory is that of hating dresses. She wants to wield a sword, not wear a Tierra. Yet, every Disney movie she sees, shows girls being rescued by boys. She begins to realize just how much a girls identity is shaped by boys attitudes. She states, " Girls shunned me because I acted like a boy, boys shunned me for being a girl, regardless or not if I acted like one." Prince's memoir takes us to high school when girls are now judging other girls. Liz is not gay, but is often called so. She simply wants to be the person she is most comfortable being. I loved how this memoir showed one girl's courage to do just that.

I sure wish I had the opportunity to read this while I was younger. I'm going to buy a copy for every grade school girl I know.

Dolors Have you heard of the French film titled the same way?
Enclosing a link in case you are interested Debbie:

Nice review, btw! :)

Caroline DJ, given what you said here, you might enjoy the book Cinderella Ate My Daughter by Peggy Orenstein. I found it incredibly eye-opening and very important!

Love it Caroline...NOT a graphic novel! Just added it.

Lisa This is right up my street! I'm putting it on my Christmas wish list. Great review, Debbie!

Debbie "DJ" Yeah Lisa, don't think you'll be disappointed. :) It was a different experience for me to read a graphic novel!

Debbie "DJ" Hey Dolors, just watched the film on Netflix this evening...really good!

Kelly (and the Book Boar) Great review! I loved this one too (and was very surprised by how much).

Debbie "DJ" Thanks! Couldn't believe how much I liked a graphic novel! If you get a chance Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened was truly the funniest book I've ever read! (Also a graphic novel)

I LOVE that one. I was a blog follower before the book too. Easily my most favorite memoir of 2014.

Debbie "DJ" Oh wow! I'd never heard of her, and the book was a gift. Best present of the year! Still haven't checked out her blog, thanks for reminding me!!

Erica Graphic novels take some getting used to but, like everything else, practice makes perfect.

I'm glad you didn't let the format get in the way of your enjoyment! There are some fantastic graphic stories out right now; I think this genre allows some authors to be more expressive than they may have been able to be in just text.

Debbie "DJ" What a great way to think of it! I'm actually reading my third graphic novel right now. Loved Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened, and now Can't We Talk about Something More Pleasant?...which reminds me, need to add to currently reading.

Erica Well done! Look at you jumping in with both feet!

Is it getting any easier to read stories in this format?

Debbie "DJ" You know the only trouble I've been having with Can't We Talk, is the print is sooo small. But that is just a GET SOME READING GLASSES issue! Otherwise, no problem.

Melanie Page Oh, Debbie, many of my recent reviews are all graphic novels! I hope you read some of my reviews, as there are many important stories being told in graphic form! I'm at GrabTheLapels. com

Debbie "DJ" Hey Melanie, will definitely check out...thanks:)
