did not like it

I knew better than to believe the gushing reviews that said this was the best book ever written in the history of books, and that the author "accurately" captured what goes on in a (reincarnated) dog's mind. Really?

While cute and mildly entertaining, this novel is, at best, an easy-to-read, mediocre tale about this dog's lives, and his favorite owner. I just don't get the hype over it. Editorial reviews call this a tear-jerker. It tried, but failed to really pull at my heartstrings, and I am a *big* crier when it comes to touching animal stories. I would recommend "The Art of Racing in the Rain" instead.

Appropriate for children. I'll pass this one on to my 12 year old.

Jessica Yes, the writing style is extremely simplistic and child-like, but should a dog be using soaring vocabulary? I actually enjoyed this as much, if not possible more than "The Art of Racing in the Rain". I think the idea of the same dog coming to terms with its reincarnation and learning something from each life is a very unique concept. I am curious as to why "The Art of Racing in the Rain" touched you so much more. That is more of a dog's perspective on human life than a dog trying to understand its own life.

Janet I cannot see how anyone can miss how extremely beautiful this book is, but the fact you gave it to your 13 year-old is absolutely great!
There is so very much in today's society that actually teaches lack-of-empathy from vicious video games to cyber bulling. We desperately need to show kids how to connect with other people. We must teach empathy and understanding to each other. We cannot fail to show all beings, including those different from us, deserve respect.
Please go a little further and donate this book, and any others you would deem helpful to a library in a depressed area.
It's an easy way for us to make a difference in someone's life and in tomorrows world.

Lesley I so agree. I loved the at of racing in the rain so much more than this book. it seemed s if the author was trying too hard. I don't get the "laugh out loud funny" reviews either. I though it was "cute" at best. easy, quick read and a cute book but not worth all the hype

Yuan I just have to disagree with Jessica a dog reincarnation isn't an unique concept and the though of always learning something new each life isn't either its a part of how many kind of religions were build. For shamanism for example it was a death sin if you killed and animal and let it have pain or spill its blood. But reincarnation can also found in budism though they speak about humans reincarnation, i belief i once read a book about a dog becoming human. This concept is very popular in asian cultures and it makes me a little sad if i read words like unique and originality, things which are almost impossible by the many books in so many languages it sounds intolerant. Beside both books have had their charms some people don't like childlike charm i happen to like more complex sentences too but i think it might be great read it in a new language

Sabrina Right? I just had to check back here to see if this were meant to be a young adult book!

Andy Alaniz Probably not a dog person to begin with.

Crystal Rodriguez Andrea, she's a Gloria :)

Zoe boooooooo

debra So agree. It didmake me cry-because any loss of a person or pet makes me cry. Did seem like a YA book. Love your honesty

Diane I haven't read this one, but really loved The Art of Racing in the Rain.

Warren Totally agreed. Quite a simple and unbelievable story. And your suggestion of 'The Art of racing in the Rain' is a good one - that's a great book.

Merle Jacobson I skimmed it
Not one of my favorite stories...

S

Patti K I agree also. cute story, but over hyped. This easy to read simple short book took me a couple of weeks to finish as I just kept setting it down, it was 'ok-to good' at best, but not great like everyone is talking about. and I AM a dog person. However, it did make me wonder about if my own dog has had other lives? and his purpose. If your looking for an excellent tear jerker dog read then "The art of racing in the Rain" is your book.

Jennifer I think it's best to view for what it is, just a sweet little book, and then you can really enjoy it. But it's interesting that you think the Art of Racing in the Rain is better. I loathed that book, thought it was full of ridiculous cliched story lines and it was actually about a man 'disguised' as a dog. I liked that the dog in A Dog's Purpose saw everything but didn't understand everything, but the dog in TAORITR saw the world just as as a man/bloke would see it, which I found very annoying to say the least, and very lazy on the part of the author. But, it would be a boring world if we all liked the same thing. I bequeathed my copy of TAORITR to someone else who truly loved it, so it now has a good home.

Cheyenne Ford Sure looks to me like the author of The Art of Racing in the Rain is jealous and has put friends and family up to trolling on this negative review. Probably just jealous that Hollywood didn't make a movie of his book. Oh well...

Katya Franklin No one actually knows what goes around in the dogs brain, they could be right, or they could be wrong.
And dogs coming back as different type of dog?? umm....i dont think so!!! thats just weird. I saw the trailer for the movie, it was sad, but i dont believe that a dog can come back to life as another type of dog.

Ivana Mendez Katya it's called reincarnation

Pat Wahler I agree with your assessment. Cute idea but appeared to be written as a children's book, reminding me of Black Beauty and Beautiful Joe, both of which I read at the age of 9 or 10.
