This was another great read by Edith Wharton. Although not as favored as Ethan Frome which it has been compared to, I loved it for the similarities of the complex characters and relationships. This one was a sad sort of coming of age story but more profound than a simple summer romance, and far from formulaic. Apparently this was written based on Edith Wharton's own love affair which made it even more interesting and left me wanting to read more about her personal life. Definitely recommended for fans of her books. The writing is sophisticated and beautiful as typical of her style, yet easy reading for a classic. As usual she leaves you wondering about the characters.

Iris P Julie, I love that you are reading all these classics and giving us a short preview on each one.

You might entice some readers like me, with no natural inclination to read these type of books, to consider expanding our literary interests..

Lovely review!

Dianne I agree, Iris! I always mean to get around to these classics and never do. Appreciate the inspiration.

Melanie This sounds good Julie. I haven't read anything by Edith Wharton yet but I do have The House Of Mirth waiting. Have you read that?

❶Ĵܱ Thanks so much for the kind words, ladies. Once I started reading the classics and discovered how wonderful some of them were, I wanted to read more.

Melanie, I have read The House of Mirth and liked it a lot. I had read The Age of Innocence and loved her writing so read this one next. I hope you like it!

☮K Very nice review, Julie.

Angela M Julie , I enjoyed your review and its really nice as the others have said to see your appreciation for these classics. I get so caught up in reading new releases that I very rarely go to these timeless books . I should change that once in a while .

Karen My plan is to read many classics in 2016, and Wharton is top on my list since reading Ethan Fromme. Great Review!!

Jennifer You've inspired me to read more classics in 2016!

Thanks Angela! I can relate, but I seem to have more trouble getting to the newer releases. So many books!

B, hope you like it if you try it. I like that idea of a "might-read" list.

B the BookAddict I do love Wharton's novels excepting Ethan Frome which I found terribly depressing.

You may like this one better since it's not as intense, for lack of a better word. That one was haunting...it stayed with me for a long time.

Thanks Christine! I just love her writing.
