it was amazing
bookshelves: writers-on-writing, long-live-the-king, memoir, the-maine-event

I can't praise this memoir enough. Not only does Mr. King validate my entire creative process (which, until this reading, I thought of as uniquely my own), but he is encouraging and optimistic and he breaks down his habits, failures and successes in the most approachable and appealing way.

I loved this book, and I can't wait to read it again.

Quotes Julie Liked

Stephen King
“...stopping a piece of work just because it’s hard, either emotionally or imaginatively, is a bad idea. Sometimes you have to go on when you don’t feel like it, and sometimes you’re doing good work when it feels like all you’re managing is to shovel shit from a sitting position.”
Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

J. Sebastian Funny how your husband won the battle here.

Julie G Sebastian,
He not only won the battle, he created a monster. I went on to rip through several King novels after this memoir, and I think 11/22/63 is one of the best books that was ever written. A close runner-up is his collection of four novellas, Different Seasons.

Aditi I haven't read any King myself Julie. I would like to read The Shining because of that episode in FRIENDS. But I still haven't got around to reading it.

Julie G Hi Aditi,
I have been organizing my bookshelves here on GRs for days, and I wonder if I just made this one pop up in my feed?
I can't recommend this one enough. It's a memoir and a "writing guide," to an extent, and it's fantastic.

Aditi Yes Julie I think that made it pop up because it was showing in my update. It was later that I realised it's an old review.

I think I am definitely going to get my hands on this one. I have been looking for works which explore a writer's mind.

Tatevik This is in my most favourites list, Julie. I have this next to the Elements of Style
