Re-read 11/12/18

After reading (and re-reading and re-reading) and loving "Kulti", I was kind of in awe of this author and so I couldn't wait to start this one. Thankfully I was not disappointed...I really had an awesome time reading this one. I do however have to confess, that I still liked Kulti better, which has a lot to do with the heroine (Sal) of that book. I gave Kulti 5 big stars... so I will give this one 4 - 4,5 stars ... to keep it fair :)
Vanessa has been working for Aiden, NFO defenseman, also known as "The Wall of Winnipeg", for two years. Two years she has been cooking, cleaning, washing, emailing, Facebooking, twittering and dealing with all his other appointments, and she has been doing all this without any appreciation whatsoever from the big guy.
She has always known that this job would be temporary since what she wants most in life, is to be a graphic designer and her own boss. So when Aiden crosses the line and starts embarrassing her in front of other people, and not standing up for her when it counts, she has finally had enough and walks out on him.
What she didn't expect, however, was to find him on the front steps of her apartment building, asking her to come back. She sends him on his merry way. But she should have known he wouldn't stop right there because when the man wants something, he makes sure he gets it. So after a couple of times, of her saying no, he proposes a deal she can't refuse..... A marriage for money ...a lot of money ;)
In exchange for this "green card" marriage, he will pay off all her student loans and buy her a house in the end. She will, however, have to stay married to him for 5 years. No other relationships allowed, for either of them (which shouldn't be a problem).
Vanessa has always stressed over her student loans and wants nothing more than to have them paid off. She comes from a family of assholes and never had anything growing up. Everything she has, she had to work her ass off to get. She knows she won't be able to pay off her loans in even 10 years' time, so this proposition is very alluring. She knows she should just accept, she will never get another chance like this....so she does.
She moves in with Aiden and they start their journey together. In the beginning, they don't see each other very much. She has her own bedroom and her work, he is busy with his schedule. But little by little they get to know each other and find out, that things aren't always as they seem.
I truly enjoyed reading this book, although the heroine got on my nerves a couple of times. Especially in the beginning, when she kept getting cautious and thinking about throwing up. I mean you made the decision....now stick with it and stop whining !! This is the difference between Sal from Kulti and Vanessa...I was a bit disappointed about that. Vanessa is a bit of an insecure pushover. Case in point... Vanessa's family !! I hated them. My god, they were just awful !! Her mom and sister...I have no words
I didn't understand Vanessa. She just took that shit and went back for seconds, and then apologized for thinking bad about them ?? Grow a freaking backbone already !!
Just like Kulti, this is a very slow build romance and the steamy part (there is really only 1), doesn't happen until the end. I knew this going in and I had no problems with it. I love my steam (very much), but this author has a way of pulling me into the book and just patiently wait until the very end, to get my little steam fix ;)
This a 4-4,5 star read for me. I'm gonna round it down to 4 stars because Vanessa did annoy me at times. It is still going on my favorites shelf though because I really enjoy this author's writing style !!
Highly recommended!
