My penultimate Jane Austen novel. (nooooooo!)

For me, it took too long to get going. Not until they arrived in London that I started to get curious about how the story will unfold and what will happen to the Dashwood sisters. Elinor, I liked well enough but I found Marianne to be too self-righteous and annoying. She did turn a new leaf in the end but I think it came too late for me to start liking her at that point.

Owning to the fact that because of HER, I had to deal with a selfish man named Willoughby. And even after I thought I was in the clear, had to suffer through his long arse, asinine speech of how he pitied himself (view spoiler)

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Insufferable man! Get lost already!

I'm afraid I was not partial to any of the men in this. Can you tell? Ha!

The only one with Y chromosome who was a bit interesting was Colonel Brandon but he had such a small role in the book. I wish we could see more of him! Even Mr. Palmer was entertaining to read about. As for the rest, I hated Willoughby (yes, needed to be point out again) and Edward was... well, he was kind of boring.

All these main characters in this book made me appreciate, probably for the first time, the 'mouthy' characters in Austen novels. I know, I know, I'm shocked myself. I never endeared myself to any of them before. Although I was real close to do that for Miss Bates in Emma but ended up didn't - she was okay but that was all.

Here, I loved it whenever Mrs. Jennings and Charlotte/Mrs. Palmer were in the scene. Delightful in contrast of several insipid, stoic characters.

Ariya Delightful and funny review!

Melanie (TBR and Beyond) Great review. I did enjoy the book more than you but I agree with lots of your points. Marianne drove me crazy a lot of the time.

Cyndi Great review!! Although I adore Jane Austin and always will, this book has no good men in it. I've often wondered if she wrote it at a time when she was really displeased with men. ;-)

L A i N E Y (will be back) @Cyndi - Hahahahaha!! That's a great speculation!! I'm glad I'm not the only one coz I've been hearing about Edward this Edward that and I was like,,, hmm,, I'm not feeling him at all, what's wrong with me?! .. Thanks Cyndi ^^

message 5: by ղí (new)

ղí I tried to reading it once, but I got bored and i abandoned lol It´s just, nothing compares to Pride and Prejudice! Imo obviously, I´ve lost count how many times I´ve read the book and watched the movie. Great review btw, I think I may pick it up someday just to get it over with haha

L A i N E Y (will be back) @Talia - Thank you :') And I almost put it on hold many times *gasp* Me? Putting Jane Austen book on hold?? Oh the horrorr! Hahaha.

P&P is masterpiece so I think we're being bit unfair to compare this one to that. But yes I did that too, couldn't help it! xD

I hope you do enjoy it if you decide to pick it up Talia :)) Is P&P your favorite out of Austen books??

L A i N E Y (will be back) @Melanie - Ohhh thank you Melanie and also for saying Marianne annoyed you lol! What about Willoughby??! I really count't stand him....

Yeah, you may be right about comparing P&P when it´s a masterpiece.

Haha I didn´t want to dnf it at first, because is a Jane Austen book, but I was just like "nope". The same happened with Persuasion tbh.

Besides P&P, I have read just Emma (plus tried S&S and Persuation), I know, I´m a horrible person. I do want to read all her books, but I haven´t felt in the mood in a while. P&P is one of my favorite books ever (so is obviously my fave of Jane´s work) and I also love the movie that has Keira Knightley in it lol :P

What about you, Lainey?? Since you have read almost all her books (just one left damn), what are your thoughts? any favorite besides P&P? give me all the dirt hahah

Julie G Lainey,
It's definitely one of the slower Austens, but I have developed a love for it over time. Have you seen the Ang Lee movie of it? Greg Wise as Willoughby and Alan Rickman as Brandon will definitely increase your interest in these men! Greg Wise=yes. Oh yes.

L A i N E Y (will be back) @Talia - No I totally understand you Persuasion was very different tone from P&P but I listened to the audiobook version and I did enjoy it (maybe even more than S&S now that I think about it!) Maybe if you wanna try that again, opt for audio? It's free the librivox version :)

Oh that movie got me into Austen!! Have you seen the BBC version, the series that Colin Firth was Mr. Darcy? I liked the Kiera movie so much when I saw it but after watching the series, o m g so amazing so now I definitely prefer BBC version. I rewatched it every year since lol! Both leads were incredible <3

Anyway haha, my fav of Austen's books is weirdly not P&P (wtf lainey? right? xD). Yeah I lovelovelove Mr. Darcy & Elizabeth - truly one of my otp. But as a whole, my fav book of hers is Emma! I just really adored Emma and I found it such a clever and hilarious book. P&P is also my fav book though *point to favorite shelf* I just love Emma a bit more ;D

I envy you Talia, still have several of Austen wonderfulness to enjoy ahead of you!! I only have Mansfield Park left (T_T)

Ps. You have no idea how happy I am to discuss/fangirl Jane Austen with you <3 Lets keep going!! :D

Bgurl (don't h8 me cuz I'm honestful) "The only one with Y chromosome who was a bit interesting was Colonel Brandon but he had such a small role in the book."

HA! That's a great line Lainey! Sorry this didn't work for you. Have you ever seen any of the movies?

L A i N E Y (will be back) @Julie - hahahahahaha I love your 'greg wise yes. Oh yes.' ;))

I did watch the movie Julie, and it was just so-so the first time but after finishing the book, I watched it again and this time I actually appreciated the movie more. Like I got that it was hard to make coz the source was like you said, real slow especially first half. And YES I didn't despise Willoughby as much in the film lol!!

I still liked this book though because I can't resist Austen writing: marvelous every time <3

Yeah, I think what happened was that I was so enamoured by P&P that I set high expectations for the other book and I was a little disappointed by the difference. I was young and foolish, I mean younger and a little more of a fool (I´d like to think hahah). Anyways, thanks for the rec! I´m gonna check it out and see what happens (especially since Im still not used to audiobooks haha)

Lainey omg SAME!! I watched that movie, and I fell in love with it and I just wanted to check the book. And the book killed it too <3
I haven´t watched the BBC series bc I actually didn´t know it existed lmao until maybe last year, wtf right? I´ve seen gifs and I hope this doesn´t come out wrong, but I feel the cast is not as pretty as the Kiera knighley one, so Im not that interested (mr darcy is WAYYYY more good looking at the 2005 version haha). But I do wanna watch it because SO many people have talked wonders about it, and how they liked it even more than the other, which it sounds insane to me bc I love the 2005 one with all my heart. So I deff will check it out, and I´ll come screaming at you with my thoughts haha

Also, talking about P&P adaptations, have you watched the youtube series?? Lainey, you´ll get obsessed with it BC IS SO DAMN ADDICTIVE. I´m deff gonna ruin your life bc you´ll just want to binge watch it. Just search "the lizzie bennet diaries" (which I also think is based in a book with that title). Oh and there´s an Emma version too!!

Mr. darcy and elizabeth slayed me, I love them. I actually have to confess that I didnñt like Emma that much. I think is part of what I talked before about having high expectations after P&P. I thought it was funny, but I guess I was waiting for more, so I was just "meh" about it ahah Don´t hate me!!

Yeah, I do have tons to go, but hey! You can always reread them, so I don´t see how is it bad that you have read ALMOST all of them. I know there won´t be any "first time reading this" after Mansfield Park, but at least you can go back to the ones you really did love and feel it all over again.

Ps: I´m happy you find talking with no-knowlegde little me fun!! I´ve enjoyed this too so I´m deff agreeing with the fangirling motion <3

Nissa | Of Pens and Pages Book Blog omg yes yes yes! I agree with everything in this review, especially about Colonel Brandon. Wonderful review, Lainey! xx

L A i N E Y (will be back) @B - Thanks girl, I did enjoy it though inspite of everything coz the writing was awesome as always and I'm weak in the face of great writing ;)

I've only seen the film with Kate Winslet as Marianne. (I don't know of other version lol) I liked it more after I read the book! And for the first time I thought 'hey Kate is excellent actress!" She never stood out for me before I don't know why. But her Marianne was so believable! Did you like the movie B??

Yeah, I liked that movie! And I feel you about the writing, when great writing isinvolved, I can overlook things more easily. If I feel in the a mood of reading classics, I´ll be sure to go back and read more of Austen´s books :)

L A i N E Y (will be back) @Talia - I had the same thought as you when I started watching the BBC series!! Like everyone looked so much older than they were supposed to be! Especially the Bennet sisters. The 2005 cast was more age appropriate I believe but then everything was just too modern (i only realized this after watching BBC haha).

Their looks may not looked quite 'right' but the acting was superb though. Jennifer Ehle played Elizabeth so gracefully and snappy but in a mild way that I think women back then had to be. They couldn't be confrontional or forceful I mean. Regency English society man!

And Mr. Darcy... You thought Colin Firth wasn't hot right? Me too! Wait til you see him in this! I think he was in his 30s. I gaurantee you will see how perfect he is as Mr. Darcy esp. the scenes where he was trying (&failing in Elizabeth's mind) to flirt with her at the piano and another ones when he starting to think she liked him back when she was real nice to Gorgina (his face was so handsome trustme!). And he looked so infatuated with her, my face turned red just watching him!!! I promise I'm not crazy hahaha!

And don't you rush with her books Talia! I think you need to be in certain frame of mind to consume classics 'effectively' at least that's how it is for me HAHA! I am rereading her works almost every year girl! Sometimes I'm afraid if something's not quite right with me but damn I love how she used language so much!! We're the same on the score i see, glad to know ;))

L A i N E Y (will be back) Oh I didn't know about that show Talia, have to search it soon thanks for the recc girl <3

L A i N E Y (will be back) @Nissa - Thanks nissa glad we're on the same page on the Colonel ;) Such a gentleman!!

Okay, you´re selling this BBC series to me so good, I swear that after my finals week is over I´m gonna go adn watch it haha I already watch the 2005 version a lot, so why not to switch things up a little bit??
I also have seen posts about how the BBC version is more accurate about this sort of historical stuff, but im trash for the other one okay? hahah

The piano scene OMG tbh I sometimes re-watch the movie and laugh about how akward Darcy was at flirting haha I love him

If you end up watching the youtube series, please come scream at me bc I haven´t met people that love the books/movies that had not liked the series lol (is modern P&P btw!!!, but I loved it so much!)

PS: Im happy we´re officially friends now hahah here´s to more fangirl/rave talks about books <3

Oh Emer yes i second this! About the one not deserving AND the one deserving ;)))

That wasn't my intention though but hey if it works, i'll take it! Hahaha xD

Hello to you too my new friend 😙👍

V. A Court of Wings and Ruin is NEW ADULT/EROTICA but ŷ editors won't tell you to include it in the choice awards I love age difference romances, I always imagined Coronel brandon as someone not exactly handsome but attractive in a mature way. He's way more interesting than Edward and Willoby

L A i N E Y (will be back) @Veronica - I don't usually like Hero lots older than the h but even me prefer Colonel all the way in this!! Oh oh don't begin with the Willoughby man - annoyed the hell out of me!

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) Great review--but it was her first novel, after all. Like all of us she had to learn about pacing. Golden rule: you have to get the reader's attention, and then hold it. But then, the novel as we know it was pretty much in its...well, teenage years...when Austen started.

Eric Hausman-Houston Great review! Austen was so great at dialogue and that is missing here. Think she learned a lot from this.

C. (Comment, never msg). Last names as names make women sound like men and are jarring to me anyway, if family names don't include "Ms". ;> I am not a classic reader and loved this. The pace didn't matter. I look forward to her next ones in publishing order. If they get better as experience goes on.... you see why I treat myself to publishing order! :-)
