it was ok

Well.

I can't get behind a relationship where one character is a racist, sexual, verbal, and physical abuser. Then go as far as market their relationship as "slow burn." LOL yeah. Don't insult my intelligence.

With that being said, however. I can't say this is the worst book I ever read. I've mentioned this once in my review for 50 Shades of Grey that while it's not the best book ever written, EL James at least knows how to keep her audience reading and I found this true for Captive Prince. I mean, I finished it in less than 24 hours and I was interested enough to keep reading and reading and reading until the end. So on that level... yeah.

On the other hand, this book does not have a plot. All it is is moving our main character, Damen, into increasingly and escalatingly horrible situations. I guess I should say trigger warning for rape? A lot of rape. And while of course I don't agree with that at all, I did feel like it accurately represented a time period of slavery that we all kind of just want to pretend didn't happen but did, I just wished it wasn't so romanticized. I mean all the orgy parties in this book I've seen on shows like Spartacus, Game of Thrones, pretty much any historical drama series on networks like HBO, Starz, etc. I also preferred if this book was a historical fiction book because this "fantasy setting" was extremely weak with literally no worldbuilding. I could have substituted any place mentioned in this book with a city like "Rome" or "Athens" and the story still would have made complete sense. That's not how fantasy should work.

So with all these orgy parties and rape, it wasn't exactly that, that had bothered me, it was Laurent and Damen's relationship that bothered me. If you want all these things in your story, (and done well) hey, do it. I like books that push the envelope, exploring things that have happened in our real-world. I don't think subject matter in books should be restricted because they make people uncomfortable or they are taboo. As long as it is done well, with purpose, and advances the story.

But this relationship between Laurent and Damen made me sick.

I literally have no idea why people ship these two. And don't tell me Laurent makes this huge 180 in the series and gets better. Fuck. That. The entire book Laurent goes about finding ways to HUMILIATE and CUT DOWN Damen. But these two should get together?

ARE

YOU

FUCKING

SERIOUS.

I say that as a statement and not a question because it should be a no brainer. I'm also saying this because goddamn, it needs to be said but if Damen was a FEMALE, everyone would be up in arms about this book. There would be no praise. But, just became Damen is a MALE we aren't supposed to defend him? I'm sorry but that is some fucked up backwards logic in our society as a whole. If you're going to complain and bitch about a female going through something like this you sure as shit need to do the same thing if a male is too

I hate to compare this book to 50 Shade of Grey because it's not my favorite book either, but that book gets so much shit for the relationship.

BEAR WITH ME BECAUSE I NEED TO PUT THESE TWO BOOKS IN PERSPECTIVE.

- A female entering a CONSENSUAL relationship of (I guess) taboo sex. Christian is crucified for reasons x, y and z.
- Damen is sold as a SLAVE to Laurent, is subjected to attempted rape, whipped into almost unconsciousness, continual racial slurs, public humiliation, and public orgasm. Laurent is praised for reasons x, y, and z.

Yeah, ok. I see it now. And I think it all comes down to gender. But whatever.

Erasmus was the saving grace of this book and I shipped him with Damen and in my head, they ended up together.

Guess I should also mention that I will be continuing the series because I need to see how this shit relationship plays out.

A love story between an abuser and his abused.

I can't make this shit up if I tried.

Kennia Literally, everything I feel.

Maya I thought the same thing while reading the first book; A lot of things will clear up while reading the second and third book :)

Kara I think the big difference between 50 Shades and CP is that 50 Shades was problematic because it promoted an actual real world lifestyle completely incorrectly. It was also given a ton of flack because it wasn't a positive role model for a healthy relationship, but I don't necessarily agree that stories need to be responsible for that? Especially since it was an adult fiction book. Twilight was aimed at teenagers, so I can see the argument about promoting the type of relationship Bella and Edward had wasn't positive for young girls. But 50 Shades was just trashy romance done wrong, and called out because it got so popular.

So CP should not be held accountable because it takes place in a fantasy setting? I find this to be a double standard. They're still human, no matter what genre their story falls under. And honestly, I see CP as a romance done wrong and is starting to be called out because it's getting more popular.

Kara No, just that that's why people were so up in arms about it. People can be up in arms about this one as well, and I can 100% see why people would be unable to handle it, wouldn't enjoy it, and it's definitely a series that needs trigger warnings. But it's not romanticizing rape. It isn't saying, this is healthy. Vere is purposefully disturbing, and a huge part of the story is exploring power and sex dynamics.

As I said in my review, the politics and setting in Vere is not what bothered me. I do feel like it portrayed slavery very accurately. The relationship between Laurent and Damen did, which is most definitely romanticized considering so many people are championing behind their relationship when Laurent is an abuser. My reasoning of bringing in 50 Shades as an example was for gender issues.

Jessica Shelley Yassss! Preach it girly! LOVE this review! <3

Kara It's definitely not a sweet romance story, and maybe it's a disservice for people to hype it as one because then you go into it with false expectations. I remember thinking the same thing when I read the first book, since there's 0 romance in it. It develops later, but it's still never easy. I don't know, I guess it comes down to the type of story people like. Sorry if I've come across as combative btw. I'm not trying to say how you feel is wrong, I just didn't think it was the same thing as 50 Shades.

Ashley Cruzen I'm pretty much completely with you on this review. Honestly I can't understand why this book is classified as romance. I just finished book two and while I didn't vehemently hate it as much as a lot of people, it just seems like a really bizarre way to classify it and I genuinely cannot understand the "shipping" thing. What. Even.

³¢²â»å¾±²¹³ó☾ Great informative review. I also really couldn't picture why or how these two would end up together. But at the end of the series I really loved them. damen and Laurent are my personal OTP

Gabby Interesting review. I've seen a lot of posts about this series lately - I guess because the 3rd book just came out (or is coming out soon?) It's bizarre because I've seen so many bad reviews that it makes me want to read it - especially since you said you read it in 24 hours. I've been in a reading slump for the past 2 weeks and I feel like I need a terrible book that is super addicting to get me out of it - books like this always tend to make me appreciate good books even more.

Allie Rose This review was just so on point. Thank you!

±·´Çé³¾²â Great review Lainey! I completely understand the discomfort you felt regarding the "romance" between Laurent and Damen. I think I liked book 1 slightly better than you did but I have to admit that while the story's extremely...well, readable, even after having read book 2 I personnally still don't get Damen's attraction to the Vere Prince. With that being said, it's pretty much a sure thing that you will enjoy the sequel a lot more than this one. I think ;-)

Tara Taillon From all of the horrible reviews I've seen, I was surprised you picked it up, but when I saw you did, I knew you were going to tear it a new one. From what I've read, there was no way you wouldn't be critical of all of these horrible problems in this book. I won this book in a Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ giveaway, and the only reason I'm interested in reading it is to understand just why these reviews are so harsh. I think some day curiosity might kill the cat.

SakuraPlum LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN Laurent was not an abuser okay.He hated slavery. He was extremely mad at Damen because he knew his identity which was his brothers killer. And this book is nothing like 50 shades of grey.Laurent don't come from inflicting pain on others. And don't tell me you don't wish to hurt your family killer.

Grace ☆彡 This review is the most glorious thing I've read. You eloquently voiced all my problems with the book, bless.

Vicky It's true that it's not for everyone. I'm sad you didn't like it better.

V. A Court of Wings and Ruin is NEW ADULT/EROTICA but Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ editors won't tell you to include it in the choice awards Well said Lainey. I can't believe that so many reviewers are giving this book a free pass on the way it handles rape and pedophilia.

Bgurl (don't h8 me cuz I'm honestful) Another excellent review Lainey! So smart. Thanks

Rohsaan McInnes Lol, I love it when I read a review by someone who hates a book (or aspects of it), at least enough to only give it 1 or 2 stars, then says, but I’m going to read the rest of the series to see if it’s as bad as this. Lol. That’ll show ‘em!
I , personally, stop reading, find something l like better.
