A little story....
There are times when my child, who is 3 now will act like he is playing with my brother. He will tell me stories of him and his "unc's" conversations. He has told me my brother was in a car wreck and hurt his neck. He has told me my brother lives in the sky with Jesus. You catch my drift. My son has said a lot of things to me that I did not tell him. That seem as if they come out of nowhere.
Do I get that this sounds crazy? Yes. Do I believe God works in small children? Yes. My son was given a gift, I believe. A gift of being able to remember his uncle who passed away when he was only 10 months old. The memories are his own, not something we put in his mind.
So when I heard about this book I had hoped it would be something similiar to that. And, I guess in some ways it was. I admit I was wary. This is just not my favorite genre of books. But, it has recieved some pretty high ratings and praise, so I figured I'd jump on the bandwagon to see what the fuss was about.
After finishing, I feel ripped off. I wonder how much of that was spoon fed for the child to say. I'm not saying the story doesn't have any merit, but I wonder how much the dad added to it to make it add up. If it is for real.... good for them. It's one of those things I think was given to this family in a time when they needed it... it shouldn't have been made into a book. I'm not saying just keep it all to yourself, he was fine in telling his church in his sermon. If you were going to make it into a book and the profits were going to benefit a charity or something I might have a little more respect. But, as far as I know all the money went to this little's boy's family.
There is a book that speaks of heaven, of Jesus, of God... it's called the Bible. I should have just picked that one up off my nightstand...
2.5 stars
Is heaven for real? Absolutely, but maybe not Colton Burpo's version. I just don't think it's meant for anyone to really KNOW until you are there to stay....
Off the soap box now.
