The Nix is made up of many good parts, some very funny even, but most of them never come together. There were whole chapters of this doorstopper that felt like unnecessary padding.

The central story - about a bored college teacher who is commissioned to write a book about the mother he hasn't seen for years - is diluted by hundreds of tangents that wander off in all directions, spending far too much time on inconsequential anecdotes and subplots from Samuel's childhood, as well as side stories about minor characters. Plus, I don't want to be the kind of asshole who says every book over 500 pages is too long but, truly, this is too long. A third could have (and should have) been cut with little effect to the story.

I've started with the negative, but I did enjoy this book. It was much funnier than I expected and there were some really fantastic scenes where Hill's writing just sparkled with charisma. Several people have noted the early exchange between Samuel and one of his female students, in which she attempts to get away with plagiarism by using almost every logical fallacy you can name. It was hilarious perfection.

Moments of brilliance are scattered throughout but, overall, the book just needed another round of editing to sharpen the focus. Detail can be a great thing, but often excessive detail reads like filler. That was the case here. The great writing didn't disguise the pointlessness of certain sections and it was very tempting to skim read them (as I found out later, that would have probably had no effect on my reading experience).

Not bad for a debut, though. I'd happily check out Hill's future work.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. It was pretty exhausting.

Brad Jensen I think my perspective is a little skewed as I'm just listing to the Audiobook version of The Nix, but I rather find myself enjoying the diversions and learning about the other characters that Samuel interacts with, even though they may not be fully Supporting Characters. I found myself rather enjoying learning about the downfall of Ponage... I actually know some individuals that are super wrapped up into their virtual gaming worlds and hearing all the details about the degradation of neurotransmitters and brain activity put a smile on my face and chuckle into my slightly twisted sense of humor. So there's that! =8)

Cheers!

Steve I couldn't get past the plagiarism discussion that opened the book. Actually it was pretty funny, until it wasn't. That scene alone should have been half as long as it played out. I've been reading long enough to know that in a 600 page book, that pattern will be repeated again and again.

Robert agree completely

Sherri I am 70% in (listening) but I can't agree with you more. This book would have been a lot better if 1/3 was cut out!!

Sydney Bollinger I’m about halfway through this right now and have such mixed feelings: do I like this book? Do I like any of the characters? Why are they this way? Though at some points I find I can’t put the book down. I definitely agree if this was cut down it would have been much more enjoyable

Carolann D Glad I am not alone reading these comments.

Mildred van Berckel Wow, my thougts exactly! Hill is a great writer but this novel is way, way, way too long! It totally loses focus and even becomes boring in the last 200 pages. It was a bit of a struggle to finish. Such a pity! Where the hell was his editor?? Hill was a little too ambitious to write the great American novel! But he is one to watch, for sure.

Lea I agree! He has poignant moments, but its overworked in so many places. I struggled to finish it because it became a chore to read in a way.

MD This review is spot on. The tangents are driving me insane!

Denise Perfectly stated. I love your reviews.
