UPDATE 09-12-17: Tower of dawn is one of the MOST read NEW ADULT READ THIS WEEK , MAAS HAD ALSO ONE OF THE MOST READ BOOKS IN THE EROTICA GENRE LAST WEEK
description
I took screenshots, because those lists change every week. THRONE OF GLASS ISN'T A YOUNG ADULT SERIES even though they toned down the erotic scenes for this book. Young adult hasn't ever been a sexless genre contrary to popular belief, but Maas books are NEW ADULT and her content is erotic, not just graphic, it's erotic.

UPDATE 09-15-17
Please check my friend Emer's review. I agree with her review
in so many accounts
Emer's A court of wing and ruin review

ORIGINAL RANT

NOT A SINGLE SERIES WRITTEN BY SARAH J. MAAS IS REALLY A YOUNG ADULT SERIES. All are new adult/adult and, in the case of A Court of Mist and Fury, erotica/erotic romance

Don't let some booktubers, Kirkus reviews, common sense media or some goodreads users tell you otherwise. They might have their own reasons to lie about this issue but trust only the reviews where the reviewers are willing to mention that this book isn't young adult or that mention the sexual content.

I repeat

NONE OF SARAH J. MAAS SERIES IS YOUNG ADULT. Perhaps book 1 and 2 of the throne of glass series have some young adult elements, but the rest of the book in the series is new adult.

One more time I'll say this just because I still get reports of 12-13 YO kids reading A Court of Mist and Fury and also several libraries and bookstore have shelved Maas books in the YA section.

THRONE OF GLASS IS A NEW ADULT SERIES EXCEPT FOR THE FIRST TWO BOOKS, the rest is heavy on adult content. If any BOOKTUBER, Book blogger or Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ user (PLUS COMMON SENSE MEDIA AND KIRKUS REVIEWS) tells you otherwise it's because they are lying through their teeth. Don't trust them. Do your own research. You can start by reading pages 21, 22, 530, 531, 532, 533 of the harcover american version of A Court of Mist and Fury

Be careful if you're planning on giving any of Maas series as a book gift to an underage reader. It will make you look like a pervert because it's like giving Fifty shades of Gray. No I'm not exagerating. Several HONESTgoodreads users have mentioned Sarah J. Maas sexual scenes in their book reviews. Of course those reviews aren't visible as honest reviewers are rarely popular.

If sexual content doesn't bother you or you are of age then I think you are okay reading both series. I think A court of thorns and roses is the best one of the two.

If you don't feel comfortable reading sexual content, or you aren't of age yet to read sexual content avoid the Throne of glass series and the A court of thorns and roses series.

If any teacher or librarian is reading my review, please be aware that trusted websites like Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, Common sense media and Kirkus reviews have covered up the information regarding the sexual content and genre of Maas books. Maybe by mistake. But don't let them fool you.

A COURT OF MIST AND FURY (book 2 of ACOTAR) A COURT OF WINGS AND RUIN (book 3 of ACOTAR) EMPIRE OF STORMS (book 5 of Throne of glass) and TOWER OF DAWN (book 6 of Throne of glass) AREN'T SUITABLE FOR UNDER 18 READERS

All Sarah J. Maas series are new adult, meaning that they portray certain themes of the young adult genre but their characters are older and the violence and the sex are more in tune with adult reads. Most libraries and bookstores don't have a new adult section so Maas books should go to the adult section even though they are new adult.

More on what New adult is HERE (Notice that SJM books are among the most read of the new adult genre)

description

New Adult fiction bridges the gap between Young Adult and Adult genres. It typically features protagonists between the ages of 18 and 30.

The genre tends to focus on issues prevalent in the young adult genre as well as focusing on issues experienced by individuals between the area of childhood and adulthood, such as leaving home for university and getting a job.

New adult is typically considered a subcategory of adult literature rather than young adult literature. Some popular new adult titles include The Magicians by Lev Grossman, A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas, Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire and Fangirl by Rainbow Rowel

Bloomsburry Children, the publishing company, has added some warnings in some editions in some countries. Those warning aren't present in all the editions of Maas books so be careful. If possible, Spread the voice, because pornographic content is often used by child abusers to lure their victims. Please don't let these books stand in the children section of your local bookstore.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: Some GR librarians will tell you that content and age of a book won't matter for a book to be considered as long as a young adult imprint is behind the publication of said book.

Don't believe them. Fifty shades of grey and in this case Fifty shades of fae won't ever be young adult books even if there's a "children" imprint behind it. Besides Children and young adult are different genres so the deceiving name of the publishing company doesn't count if they are going to publish erotic content.

Also please don't comment in my review telling me "I'm x years old and I'm not disturbed by erotic content" or "I'm a parent and I let my kids read fifty shades of grey". Good for you but even if what you said was true, everyone is different. Some kids can handle adult content others can't, some 9-13 YO will keep buying books in the YA section of the bookstores and libraries because parents have the wrong impression (maybe because there are so many YA books turned movie) that YA is a sexless genre safe for 9-14 YO to read. Which in the case of Sarah J Maas and other New adult authors isn't the case.

Thanks to Belle for sharing this picture, but how come an EROTIC/NEW ADULT series is a CHILDREN'S best seller?
description

People please don't get decieved. Honest reviewers, please do your research and post a HONEST REVIEW that mentions the erotic content of the series (not this particular book) so parents, librarians, teachers and readers can make informed decisions about this series. Stop covering up for the publishing company.

04-22-2018
I understand Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ censoring my review to hide it from the main page. But why hide it from my friends? I think it's responsibility of parents and readers and not from publishers to know what the content of a book is before buying/reading. But how are we the readers supposed to do that when Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, Common sense media and some booktubers are so bent into hiding the information? Please Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ employees and editors, don't make it difficult for us to find the appropiate information, your DECISIONS should be ALL goodreads members's best interest in mind, not just a few authors and publishers' interests in mind.

Agreed!!! BUT Like You said. It's a Little TOO Late For That

I Quit Reading The Throne of Glass Series, Well.Over a Year Ago. After Finishing Queen of Shadows, It Got Suggestive. and I Had a VERY Strong Feeling That I Should Not Finish The Series. But I Had No Idea What The Feeling Meant UNTIL I Read on The Bloomsbury Website Page for Empire of Storms. That It Was Going to Have * Mature Content* . I Refused to Read The Book.

A.F. Rose I once met a 9 year old girl that told me she had just finished Empire of Storms... I was so uncomfortable, she wasn't lying, I asked here about stuff and she had read it. Parents need to be more involved. I love Sarah J Maas, but I am an adult. Definitely not suitable for children!

9 Year old reading empire of storms?? Wow, that's what happens when you add a coloring book for a new adult/erotica series to your already deceiving marketing. Please spread the voice and don't let your bookstore or local library put this on the teen section. This isn't a young adult series.

La Coccinelle To be fair, adult colouring books are a thing. There's even a Game of Thrones one (and I don't think anyone's going to argue that that's a series suitable for kids).

The difference is that Maas' books are falsely marketed as Young adult reads and Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ gods are helping the publishing company to get away with their fake marketing so many readers don't know that Maas writes erotic scenes and then sell the books to 9-16 YO kids. Everyone knows that Game of thrones is an adult series which by the way, has less erotic content than Throne of glass 5 and A court of thorns and roses 2 . Even in common sense media some people complained that GOT had a 17 + rating and A court of mist and fury a 14+ rating when Maas books have more erotic scenes than Game of thrones.

Chloe Fandom Queen It's a bit unfair to say no-one under 18 should be reading them. I agree that they should be marketed as NA rather than YA, but I'm 17 and have read all of her books - including the erotic scenes - and they don't bother me. I think it's a case of maturity. Perhaps no-one under the age of 15/16, but at that age a lot of readers are mature enough to handle scenes like this.

message 14: by Jenny (new) - added it

Jenny ^ I agree, it's definitely a matter of maturity. As long as parents are okay with it, I believe even 13+ people can read these books, IF they are mature enough to handle it. It really shouldn't be up to people to decide someone younger than 16 can't read her books. But yeah they shouldn't really be classified as YA, more like adult. And I mean, it's better late than never for putting a mature warning on them, since lots of people are only just discovering these books :) again, just my opinion.

Most people don't PAY their hard earned dollars to have children under 18 reading erotica books. Most parents of 13 YO don't PAY for fifty shades of grey, but if the kids read it at least they know what it's about BEFOREHAND. The erotica content of Maas books isn't a widely known fact, but still:/user_status...

Lindsay As someone who has *actually* read this book, it is absolutely NOT new adult. There is nothing in it that isn't suitable for a teenager to read.

Stephanie Honestly, I won't read this book because I can't stand Chaol. It's just a bonus that I won't have to read the awful sex scenes.

And yay for the UK cover having warnings. I really wish the US would follow suit.

message 20: by Monique (new) - added it

Monique Maybe you need to read real erotica. :/

Sunny Look, the problem with the US publishers is that they don't mention the erotic content. I think it's a 100% okay to read explicit sex and smut. The sex in Tower of Dawn isn't that bad. I hate Maas's sex scenes, not because I don't like smut because I do, but because the writing makes me cringe. I know that some 13 year olds read 50 Shades, but the thing is, they know what they're going to read when they pick up that book. The are aware of what to expect because there are warnings not only on the books, but because they're published that way.

Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight are marketed as YA because it is YA. However, Queen of Shadows and Empire of Storms are not YA what so ever, they are New Adult. But because they are part of the same series, those first two books should also be marked as New Adult. No one is going to be okay if their parents just let them stop reading after Heir of Fire because the next books are explicit. It's cruel to make them stop reading lol. I'd be mad too. The reason why publishers aren't marketing it as NA is because they won't make as much money otherwise. YA is more widely read than NA. So they're not really making an effort there, and the reason why is absolutely stupid.

Adding warnings to only a few books is dishonest and vulgar in my opinion. Chaol isn't my favorite either, but I feel sorry for him because SJM mistreated him. I hope he finds happiness. My sources tell me that his sex scene was very Crown of midnight, but it's too late to tone down the sex now.

Hey Belle. I'm sorry, I accidentally erased the comment of the person with the SJM art as profile picture. I think they aren't following the discussion either way. Message 6 of this discussion states clearly that 9 YO's are reading EOS. I was reading young adult and adult (clean adult reads approved by my parents) at age 10 and borrowing books from the teen section at 11. It's not like the YA section is free of children because parents think of YA the way they think of YA movies: Sexless and safe for younger audiences.

I agree 100% with your post.

I do. Proudly, too. AND SO DOES every single A court of mist and fury fan. It was one of the most reads books of the erotica genre last week. I took a screenshot before the list changed.

message 26: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I let my 14-year old read TOG a year or two ago after he brought it home from his middle school library on the understanding that he would wait until he was in high school to continue with the series. Once EOS came out and I realized the sexual content had gone in the direction of ACOTAR, I told him he was going to have to wait until he was even older to continue.

Veronica is right, regardless of the sexual content in TOD, these characters are ALL over eighteen now (some of them WELL over *cough* Rowan *cough cough*) and since YA is an age-based classification, they should not be marketed as YA. Neither should ACOTAR (which they have at the middle school, too). Bloomsbury CHILDRENS publishes these books so why wouldn't librarians and booksellers assume they're appropriate for that crowd? At minimum they should carry explicit content warnings so that parents (and librarians and booksellers) can make informed decisions.

This is not about censorship. No one is arguing Maas's right to write these scenes or even that these books shouldn't be published, but the responsible thing to do is to mark them appropriately so that they can be marketed and shelved appropriately. If they had done that, maybe ACOTAR wouldn't be at my kid's middle school.

Parents do have a right to determine what their minor children are and aren't mature enough to read and they shouldn't have to read every single book book first in order to make that determination, especially when it comes to this type of content.

Muse-ic ♬ If it makes you feel any better, I just finished TOD and the sex is WAAAAY toned down this time around.

message 30: by Jeanny (new)

Jeanny I agree books should be clearly classified. SJM when asked defines this series as NA she was quoted as saying she doesn't want to mislead anyone & doesn't understand why anyone would think it's YA. Either way most authors have limited say in marketing. I think the publisher should market books genres clearly. YA is a misrepresentation in this series.

message 31: by Jeanny (new)

Jeanny That said I've read books listed as YA written by less popular authors that had "harsher" scenes. I can't agree with the "erotica" genre tag either.
Luckily I have no children so find the misrepresentation a minor annoyance at most.

Sunny Muse-ic wrote: "If it makes you feel any better, I just finished TOD and the sex is WAAAAY toned down this time around."

Tower of Dawn is way toned down, however, people would have to read Empire of Storms to get to ToD. But even if they read ToD first, they're most likely going to read EoS next.

Sunny Jeanny wrote: "I agree books should be clearly classified. SJM when asked defines this series as NA she was quoted as saying she doesn't want to mislead anyone & doesn't understand why anyone would think it's YA...."

I've seen her say that, but I've also seen her say she considered the first two book a YA, and the rest as NA. If a series matures like that, then she she should just classify the entire thing as NA. Also, when ACOMAF won for YA Fantasy, she just thanked goodreads and didn't take the time to correct it as being an NA.

Sunny Idk if anyone has seen this yet but.....

I love how we're discussing whether it should even be considered a young adult, and here it is on the Children's series best sellers list for September 2017.

Really? Because I happen to be a proud reader of classic romance, new adult, erotica, adult, and harlequins. I can tell you that I hadn't ever read a YA book with an erotic scene, meaning no fade to black, use of the word "cUhck" vivid nudity and no further purpose to the plot than turn on the reader, until A court of mist and fury. I had read harlequins with very erotic covers with less sexual content than court of mist and fury but perhaps you can provide me the names of those books you say are "harsher YA" than ACOTAR, IF THEY indeed exist outside self -pub new adult which IS NEVER FOUnd in bookstores. I can write parental warnings for those too, although since none of those alleged books are so overhyped as SJM books, there's a less chance that they can be found in the MG section of libraries and bookstores as Stephanie (message 26 of this thread) reported.

V. A Court of Wings and Ruin is NEW ADULT/EROTICA but Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ editors won't tell you to include it in the choice awards Jeanny wrote: "Either way most authors have limited say in marketing. I think the publisher should market books genres clearly. YA is a misrepresentation in this series. "

One thing is SJM not having a say in the unethical marketing. Another very different thing is that although I heard that she has never tried to mislead anyone (never saw a link to a tweet or interview in which she calls her series new adult) well I haven't ever heard her say "this isn't young adult" or "under 18 readers be aware of strong language, violence and sexual content. If she has mentioned it, I want the links, because that would prove she's not as crass and vulgar as some readers say. I can't imagine JK Rowling or Cassie clare going against their publishing companies marketing plans but I can't imagine them either not mentioning the real content of their books. When Clockwork princess and its very PG15 sex scenes appeared, Cassandra dicussed it again and again in her TUMBLR blog and JK Rowling was always forthcoming about her books becoming darker and darker. SJM has been awfully quiet about this IMHO and that makes it as responsible as her marketing company. One more time I applaud SJM for wrting sex scenes, but not so much for letting kids 9-15 read her erotic scenes which as I said, are more explicit than most GaME Of thrones scenes.

That's the reason I question Maas' ethics and moral quality. All she had to do was saying "my book is new adult" or "my book is mature in content and I inteded it to be NA" or something. It wouldn't have affected her sales at all. But she seemed to want to cover up the information of the real content of her books and the real genre along with a lot of booktubers and goodreads users. I'm not saying she is doing it on purpose, but she's not helping for readers and potential buyers to know the real erotic/mature nature of her books. Not many parents and readers know about this and that's how we find situations like the one mentioned in message 6 and 26 of this comment thread.

It also make me question her writing skills. She's a good writer but if her publishing company needs to resort to deceiving marekting they should have a lot of confidence in her potential to sell books for an adult market even though her books are all adult/new adult.

In some countries there is. I don't know about The US. I don't think there is if Bloomsbury children has gotten away with this and Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ is supporting (maybe by mistake) the fake marketing. And by the way. Sarah J. Maas has the most popular new adult reads this week. Sorry for going offtopic with your comment, It's just that I don't want this discussion to lose steam.

Chloe Fandom Queen You do realise that most younger teenagers nowadays are talking about sex, thinking about sex, some are even having sex so in the grand scheme of things, somehow I don't think this is that big of a deal. We can't hope to censor a generation that is already as desensitised as it is - all we can do is put warnings on things (which they have done) in the hopes they will be listened to. It's not Sarah's or Bloomsbury's fault that people ignore it.

Sunny Chloe Fandom Queen wrote: "You do realise that most younger teenagers nowadays are talking about sex, thinking about sex, some are even having sex so in the grand scheme of things, somehow I don't think this is that big of a..."

Lmfao where?! Only the UK version has warnings. The US editions doesn’t have the warnings ANYWHERE on the book. But Bloomsbury USA Children’s does not put warnings on it. Sorry...but putting Children’s after Bloomsbury does not make this okay when selling books that have explicit sex in it. And that fact that Throne of Glass series is on the top children’s book series is also not okay. If we’re questioning whether it should be considered a YA or NA, that means it definitely shouldn’t be a children’s book.

And yes, we know teenagers talk about sex and have sex and all that jizz. But when they read things like 50 shades, they KNOW what they’re getting into because it’s marketed and publicized that way. And you do realize that some teens are uncomfortable about the idea of sex right? They have a right to know that they’re going to read some smut/explicit scenes. And none of the US copies mention that. So you’re wrong. It is Sarah’s and the publishers fault for not mentioning that. People don’t ignore anything because there’s nothing there to ignore in the first place.

Chloe Fandom Queen There's no need to be so rude. I am from the UK and they have the warnings here, I didn't realise the US versions did not. So saying "I'm wrong" is very rude, especially since all of this debate is a matter of opinion. And no it is not Sarah's fault, because she has very little to do with the marketing, it is more like Bloomsbury's fault. But since this is a very popular series, it wouldn't be hard for people to look it up before reading it.

How is it not Sarah’s fault? If I wrote a book with sex in it, and people categorized it as a YA novel, I would make it a point to tell my fans that they should be expect explicit scenes. I would tell them ahead of time what to expect because I wouldn’t want them to feel like it’s being shoved down their throat. Sarah wrote the book, she should make it a priority to warn people. I know authors that do that when they think subject matter would trigger some people. And that’s just subject matter. Sarah literally has full blown out sex scenes.

Also, when she won best YA Fantasy for ACOMAF on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, all she did was thank people for voting. I didn’t see her correcting them anywhere. You can debate whether the Throne of Glass series is a YA or an NA. But the ACOTAR series is definitely NOT a young adult book.

And what do you mean people should “look it up? Most people read and pick up books by reading the blurb or the summary on the back. I don’t do extensive research when looking for a book to read. Most people don’t.

Btw, I was surprised by the sex scene Empire of Storms. A lot of young people picked up the books knowing it was a young adult. So they expect it to remain a young adult series. Authors don’t change audiences like that when releasing a series of books. For people who love the series, they automatically pick up the next installment, it’s what I do too. So she can’t create a series intending it to be for people ages 10 and up, and then make them stop reading half way through because they’re not old enough to continue. It’s dumb.

Jenny Actually Sarah talks about it in her book signings a lot. At the signing I went to, she discussed the scenes and the importance of them. And I'm 99% sure that it's Bloomsburys fault and not hers. We have to understand there's a lot more going on that we obviously do not know. She probably doesn't have a huge say in the marketing of the books anyways. lmao I think we all need to chill a little bit, y'all are making it seems like she's committed murder or something (not trying to be rude!!)

Vicky ^^
It's also her fault because she's the author.

Jenny ^ well yeah but I'm just saying even if she talked to the publishing company about changing it to New adult and such, they could probably just say no and she wouldn't be able to do anything about it. But if you're meaning it's her fault that she wrote the sex scenes, that's not really a good point because she can write what she wants (as long as it's not disrespectful or something) and more reasons ofc

Don't put words in my mouth. I mean it's her fault because she's the author and she's active in social media. She should talk about the sex beyond books signings. I love her books, but I agree with QuirkiOmega.
