did not like it

New review:
I gave it another shot and finished after a long struggle. I still stand by my opinion.

----------------------------------------------------------

Old review:
This is one of the worst books I've ever read in my entire life. In fact, this is the first book I gave up on. What's sad is that the premise behind the book is brilliant and mind blowing, but it's just not flexible to be contained in 200 pages. The book might strike you as a short easy read, but it's definitely not. The punctuation is horrible, and the story kept dragging on and on and on...

The progression of the book was extremely weird, it feels quick and intense and interesting and full of story details in two or tree pages, and then it gets extremely dull with obvious details.

I liked the author's style of writing, and I think I would've accepted the horrible punctuation if the story was good enough. But it just didn't work with me.

It took me over three weeks to figure that life is just too short to read a book you don't like. That's why I'm giving up on this book.

Mohammed Algarawi
The concept behind it was just brilliant, but the execution wasn't that much in my opinion.

*shrugs*

Mohammed Algarawi

Nema Al-Araby The style of writing is called Stream of consciousness, this is exactly how it's written. If you've read anything for Virginia Woolf or Chuck Palahniuk, you'll find the same style. I agree that it's confusing but it gets better once you know the two sides of the dialogue; it needs concentration though :)
Some really great writers used this style, amongst them are Sylvia Plath, William Borough, Mark Z. Danielewski and James Joyce. It was also in many novels like The catcher in the Rye and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

Mohammed Algarawi Hmm.. Interesting! I'm looking that up right now.

I did read Plath's The Bell Jar, and Salinger's The Catcher in The Rye and they're both two of my favorites. And I'm currently reading Ulysses. Quite frankly, I didn't find the writing style as hideous as this one. Lol

Thanks for enlightening me!

Nema Al-Araby No worries =) I noticed it awi in Mrs Dalloway for Woolf. It's almost exactly like Saramago's!

Read on then! :)

AJ This was the first book I gave up on in a loooong time. Thank you for making me feel less guilty about it by echoing my own feelings on it. (For the record, it's not stream of consciousness writing that was the issue; it just didn't engage me.)

I just gave this book 1 star too. Then read down the list of 5 star reviews thinking it was just me until I came across yours. Thanks for that :-)

ñ Ugh. Thank you. I thought I was the only one who didn't like it.

Jessaka sometimes when i hate a book and want to finish it i read in bed. i kill two birds with one stone. i get to sleep and one day the book is finished without wasting time.

Christen I’m glad I’m not the only one that felt this way. I think part of the problem is there are no real characters you get in depth with in the book. I like most of the books I read. This one was a chore to finish. I found it so boring.

Victoria That's just his writing style, and you really need to think when you read Saramago's work maybe that's what you didn't like.

Mohammed Algarawi @victoria: I understand that this is his style, and stream of consciousness might not be my thing, but you’re right. Perhaps I should give it another shot. It’s been almost 8 years and I’d like to believe that I’ve somehow grown and matured to appreciate this.

Kristine This is a great review that sums the book up exactly

Rokas Medonis Totally agree with you. I am really glad that I am not alone with this stance
