Who here has seen the show Shameless? (I am thinking of the American version, but I know there is a British one, too, that it is based on.) To me, that show could have been inspired by this memoir. Frank Gallagher and Rex Walls are the same guy!

I enjoyed all the vignettes from Jeannette Walls' life. She did a great job throwing them all together to create a story even without a specific plot. I am not sure that any of the stories lasted more than a few pages, but each one of them was interesting and important in its own way.

I listened to the book and it was great because it was was read by the author. I think that this is how all audio memoirs should be. Also, I thought it was interesting that although some of the stories made me want to reach through the speaker and shake her parents, she told the story without any positive or negative inflection. It was like she was saying, "here is my story, you decide how you want to be affected by it."

I believe that most people will enjoy this book. Some might be frustrated. Others might be brought to tears. But, in the end, I think there is a little something for everyone here.

I watched an episode of the show right after finishing the book and I could not stop saying to myself,"Dang! He really does sound like Rex!"

Thanks, Vanessa!

Charlotte Guzman This is my next read. I can't wait because I have heard so much about from different viewpoints.

Thanks, Mary! My wife read it years ago and kept bringing it up. As mentioned above - finally went for it with the movie coming out.

a. I love Shameless. I was on the fence about reading this, but this has tipped them. I'm not usually a memoirs person.

Its definitely worth it for all the Rex Walls facepalm moments!

Brandice Great review! I really enjoyed this book... I found the parents to be frustrating but couldn't put it down. I am looking forward to seeing the movie too!

Leah Martin I was just telling my friend Rex could totally be Frank! She loved the book but hasn't been keen on Shameless and it may have just changed her mind. Haha. Glad to see someone else thought it!

Yes! I think knowing this about Rex might sway some. I think the perception is that it might be a cutesy memoir - but that is so far from reality!

Eric Smith Great review, Matt. When I read this a few years back I remember it was a heart check moment for me. I loved my family but struggled as a functional alcoholic, this memoir seated as a stern warning for me, I remember thinking about certain aspects of Rex's life seemed all too familiar. Two years without one drop this March. I won't say this is what did the trick because it wasn't but when a book like this can make you think and reevaluate you life I think it is a worthy book indeed!

Wow! Thank you for sharing your story. I can imagine how seeing how someone else was affected by alcholism in real life could be a contributing factor towards a desire to get better. Congratulations to you!

Eric Smith Thank you for your kind words, Matt. I appreciate it, life is so much better now!

Robbie Matthew....your comparison between Rex Walls and Frank Gallagher is somewhat true...but at least Rex loved his family (didn't always prove it by his behavior) and gave them some semblance of positive gifts along the way. (His "gifting" of stars to his children in lieu of Christmas presents, for example, is something they (and I) will never forget!) Frank, on the other hand...is just a creep who constantly preys on his children and never provides anything but misery to them.

I will say I do agree - however, sometimes on the show it seems like despite his seemingly selfish ways, he actually does care. Then, he messes it all up again the next episode . . . so I am never sure! :)

Robbie I have a friend who uses a phrase that makes me cringe when I hear it...."He is a waste of skin." I've never felt like anyone deserves that description....until Frank Gallagher! Haha! ;)

I have heard "A waste of space" or "A waste of air" - definitely Frank!

Robbie :)

Amanda Van Parys I've always wanted to try and write a memoir and it's actually really hard to not come off as trite. There are so many unconventional/abusive childhood memoirs, yet I want to read them all, it seems!

I am always impressed when people can open up and be very candid about their life in a memoir - especially because the things that would make it interesting are often scandalous. Not that I have a whole lot of scandal in my life, but I don't think I could do it!

Amanda Van Parys I used to never talk about my childhood and I certainly never talked about it as it was happening. The basic thing about growing up in an abusive home with addicts and parents with mental illness is that it's normal to you. I respect those who can write objectively about their personal story, especially when they know the people they are writing about are still out there. I wish I could put a story out there saying "____ nearly ruined my life with their abuse and they will say they didn't... but it happened!" but put it in an eloquent way that doesn't sound like I'm doing that.

Robbie Amanda...I didn't have an abusive childhood, but I've always wanted to write a memoir as well. I think you should just start writing and see what happens! I'd love to read your book!! Good luck!! :)

Agree with Robbie - go for it! You never know what you might find!

Yes! Great minds, as they say! 😁

Pedro I’ve read this more than 10 years ago. Such a nice/cute/sad little book. I think I’ll have to read it again. 😁

Maybe one day for me - I still need to see the movie!

Khristina Chess I also read this many years ago and enjoyed it, and I recently saw the movie. It's good. The real-life pictures from her family at the end are neat to see. And you're right about Frank! :-)

Robbie I have to say I was very disappointed with the movie. Placed all the culpability with the Dad and portrayed the Mom as more of a victim...which didn't tell the complete story by long shot.

A friend of mine from college is an actor in the movie (the guy she meets in a bar), so I definitely need to see it!

Interesting - good to have another opinion going in! 😃

It's all I kept seeing, even after I found out Woody Harrelson was playing him in the movie!
