Who here has seen the show Shameless? (I am thinking of the American version, but I know there is a British one, too, that it is based on.) To me, that show could have been inspired by this memoir. Frank Gallagher and Rex Walls are the same guy!

I enjoyed all the vignettes from Jeannette Walls' life. She did a great job throwing them all together to create a story even without a specific plot. I am not sure that any of the stories lasted more than a few pages, but each one of them was interesting and important in its own way.
I listened to the book and it was great because it was was read by the author. I think that this is how all audio memoirs should be. Also, I thought it was interesting that although some of the stories made me want to reach through the speaker and shake her parents, she told the story without any positive or negative inflection. It was like she was saying, "here is my story, you decide how you want to be affected by it."
I believe that most people will enjoy this book. Some might be frustrated. Others might be brought to tears. But, in the end, I think there is a little something for everyone here.

I watched an episode of the show right after finishing the book and I could not stop saying to myself,"Dang! He really does sound like Rex!"

Enjoy! I am sure you will find it interesting (whether in a good way or a bad way - I cannot say!)

Thank you Patricia - my wife was urging me to get this finished so we could go to the movies! Now I am ready!

Thanks! :) <---- had to because of your profile pic!

Thanks, Mary! My wife read it years ago and kept bringing it up. As mentioned above - finally went for it with the movie coming out.

Its definitely worth it for all the Rex Walls facepalm moments!

Thanks - yes, like watching a trainwreck!

Yes! I think knowing this about Rex might sway some. I think the perception is that it might be a cutesy memoir - but that is so far from reality!

Thank you very much, Deborah!

😃If you love Frank, this is definitely right up your alley!

Wow! Thank you for sharing your story. I can imagine how seeing how someone else was affected by alcholism in real life could be a contributing factor towards a desire to get better. Congratulations to you!

I will say I do agree - however, sometimes on the show it seems like despite his seemingly selfish ways, he actually does care. Then, he messes it all up again the next episode . . . so I am never sure! :)

I have heard "A waste of space" or "A waste of air" - definitely Frank!

I am always impressed when people can open up and be very candid about their life in a memoir - especially because the things that would make it interesting are often scandalous. Not that I have a whole lot of scandal in my life, but I don't think I could do it!

Agree with Robbie - go for it! You never know what you might find!

Maybe one day for me - I still need to see the movie!

A friend of mine from college is an actor in the movie (the guy she meets in a bar), so I definitely need to see it!

Interesting - good to have another opinion going in! 😃
