First published in 1974 which is the year of my birth. Maybe that’s why I love reading horror books. Did Carrie seep into my young brain and soul, possessing my thoughts and actions? Well no, seeing as I have just got around to reading it in 2018.
My read before this was The Shining, which was a 5 star classic. So could Carrie, the first novel by Mr King, be just as great. Yes!
As a first book by a new author it “hit the ground running and never stopped. Mr King is one of the most well known authors ever.
Carrie is the bullied outsider at high school and her mother holds extreme religious views. So no happiness for Carrie at home or school but she does have telekinetic powers which increase as she deals with her cruel classmates and obsessed fanatical mother. It all leads to a final showdown at the school prom as Carrie reigns destruction on her town.
It is relatively short for a King book and it has a particular style which involves inserting news reports, interviews and excerpts from books into the story.
The story is real, gritty and brutal. This is what would happen if a bullied outcast did have telekinetic powers. King writes great characters, showing us the worst in humanity but still maintaining hope and goodness.
A horror classic.
