Age of the readers and how well acquainted they are with the high fantasy genre seriously need to be considered here.

I don’t think I need to say a lot on my review on this, Eragon is a very popular book and it’s been quite mixed received, to say the least. The majority of love and dislike usually depends on when did you read the book for the first time? If you were still a child or teenager, and haven’t read a lot or any high fantasy books yet, you’ll probably love this. Unfortunately, I’m reading this for the first time as an adult who’s already well acquainted with the genre.

Anyone who has read or watched Lord of the Rings or Star Wars pretty much has read this book, Eragon almost a straight copy of these franchises with different names and terminologies. And that’s okay, especially considering that the author was 15 years old when he wrote this book. However, as someone who has experienced the high number of tropes in this book out of all medium, it was hard for me to enjoy the book.

Eragon is not a bad book, by all means, it's just a book that in my opinion will appeal more towards children or teenagers; it’s something that I will definitely recommend to younger kids. If I was reading this 15 years ago, it could’ve been one of the books that introduced me to this genre and I know it, in fact, did for a lot of people. This is something I will always praise Paolini for. I don’t care what kind of books or genre you read, if the book sparked your love for reading a genre, that gets a praise from me and Paolini did it for countless readers.

“Books are my friends, my companions. They make me laugh and cry and find meaning in life.

I wasn’t planning to read Eragon in the first place but I received this book from one of my good friend, Dorina, as a birthday present because she wanted me to have this book that made her become the reader she is today and for that, I thank you very much, I will cherish this book. Although this book didn’t really work out for me, I can totally see why it’s beloved by a lot of readers, especially younger readers. In the future, Eragon could be a book that I’ll consider giving to my kids to spark their love for reading.

Silvana That's true. I might give it one or two stars if I read it now, not eons ago.

hillary You’re so right! I think this was my first high fantasy and I loved it so much that it introduced me to the genre. I reread the first three books many times, but lately I haven’t so I don’t remember them as well as before. But I also remember how disappointed I was with the last book, and now that I think about it maybe it was because it came out when I had already expanded my high fantasy knowledge :)

Petrik Silvana wrote: "That's true. I might give it one or two stars if I read it now, not eons ago."

Maybe it shoud've been a one, but I tried to implement the fact that the author was so young when he wrote this and upgraded it xD

Petrik Mari Yeung wrote: "You’re so right! I think this was my first high fantasy and I loved it so much that it introduced me to the genre. I reread the first three books many times, but lately I haven’t so I don’t remembe..."

Exactly, Mari! Haha I don't think I will continue with the rest of the series because of this book but I'm glad that this book managed to get a lot of readers into high fantasy, such as you! :)

Emma Don continue, it gets worse. The book was written by a child for children, as an adult it’s too hard to read when you’re used to proper writing.

Deedi Brown (DeediReads) This is a great point! I read these when I was a teenager and still love them. I remember reading the last one right after it came out when I was 19, and I stayed up until 4am finishing it and cried cried cried alone in my dorm room at the sad ending. I think it’s like Legally Blonde the Musical; if you go into it expecting The Lion King, of course you’ll be disappointed. But if you accept it for what it is and the purpose it’s meant to serve, you’ll see just how fun and engaging it really is.

TS Chan Very well said, Petrik! Nothing wrong with the book I'm sure but just not the right one for seasoned fantasy readers.

Kristen I think you are very right. I read this when I was in high school and remember really liking it. If I read it now, I would probably feel differently because I've been exposed to a lot more fantasy. Great review 😁

Mili Oh yeah, I remember I picked this up - looks up - 8 years ago, when I just started to read a bit more and my english needed warming up. Im not sure Id like it now though haha. But it was a good starter book and a nice genre.

Petrik Emma wrote: "Don continue, it gets worse. The book was written by a child for children, as an adult it’s too hard to read when you’re used to proper writing."

Don't worry, I won't! I agree with your point, Emma. The writing was really clunky, written by a child for children sounds about right. xD

Thank you, Deedi! I'm glad that you had such a great experience with this series! Maybe if I did read it back when I was younger, I could feel the same way as you. xD

Thank you, TS! Yes, you got that right, my friend! :)

Petrik Kristen wrote: "I think you are very right. I read this when I was in high school and remember really liking it. If I read it now, I would probably feel differently because I've been exposed to a lot more fantasy...."

Thanks, Kristen! Yeah.. can you imagine reading this for the first time after reading First Law, Manifest Delusions, Stormlight Archive, and all that? Exactly.... xD

8 years ago is a long time, Mili! Hahaha yeah, I completely agree that this book would serve as well as an introduction to the genre! :)

Verlkungen I share your thoughts exactly! I read Eragon over 10 years ago, but I’d already had my fantasy cherry well and truly popped by Lord of the Rings by then. It didn’t compare. But, it was entertaining and had I not been obsessed with LotR, it could have well been my gateway drug.

Colleen I can totally see how, as an avid fantasy reader, this one wouldn't be up to snuff! You probably shouldn't even try the rest of the series then; I don't think you'll enjoy them either.

Manda Jackson That’s exactly how I remember feeling when I read this. My dad and I read it together quite a few years ago, when I was in my early 20s. He loved it, but he hadn’t read much fantasy at that point. I, however, read the Lord of the Rings when I was 11 and that had been my gateway into fantasy, so I was well acquainted with the genre. (I tried to continue on with the rest of the series with him, and the second book ended up being my first ever DNF.) My dad has since gone on to read and love many other fantasy series, so I definitely think this book is great in that way.

C.P. Cabaniss I actually want to give this another try. It's probably been 12 years or so since I first read it. I never read the last book. I don't think I will love it, but I know what to expect. And it's certainly better than the book I wrote at 15!

message 19: by Mayim (new) - rated it 1 star

Mayim de Vries Wow, very lenient rating my friend. Benefit of the debut?

Petrik Victoria wrote: "I share your thoughts exactly! I read Eragon over 10 years ago, but I’d already had my fantasy cherry well and truly popped by Lord of the Rings by then. It didn’t compare. But, it was entertaining..."

"my fantasy cherry well and truly popped by Lord of the Rings" that's a sentence I'll never forget, victoria! xD

Petrik Colleen wrote: "I can totally see how, as an avid fantasy reader, this one wouldn't be up to snuff! You probably shouldn't even try the rest of the series then; I don't think you'll enjoy them either."

Yup! Definitely not continuing, Colleen! :D

Totally understandable! After you've read LOTR, this is almost a straight up bad copy from that series that it will be really hard to enjoy it! That's really great though that your dad read a lot fantasy books since then! :)

Oh, I doubt I'll ever write anything at this quality when I was 15.. I hope when you do decide to visit this again, it will still be a good experience, Courtney! :)

Petrik Mayim wrote: "Wow, very lenient rating my friend. Benefit of the debut?"

Nahh, it was still readable, and considering that I couldn't possibly write something like this when I was that age, giving it 1 star felt too harsh.

Mayim de Vries I admire your generosity. Myself, on the other hand, I think that just because somebody can cook, it doesn't mean they should be opening a restaurant. ;) Are you going to continue the series? I never did so perhaps it gets better?

Petrik Mayim wrote: "I admire your generosity. Myself, on the other hand, I think that just because somebody can cook, it doesn't mean they should be opening a restaurant. ;) Are you going to continue the series? I nev..."

Oh continuing is another matter, absolutely not. I have thrown away the behavior of continuing a series that started with below 3 stars rating, just no. Too many books to read!

Birte I have to agree with you, it really depends on the reading age. I read this book when I was 10 I think and I loved it but for memory's I wouldn't pick it up again, so I can cherish it even though now I'm aware that it's not the best book written.^^

Yeah, exactly! I'm glad you love and cherish this book, Birte! :)

~Dani~ Absolutely, age has a lot to do with this book. I read it originally when I was about 15 and loved it. I reread it last year and didn't hate it but it was certainly not what I remembered it.

Thought so! I think it will be the same case for me. Come to think of it, your case is also the scary part of a reread, the moment when you find out the book you loved isn't the one you remembered! xD

Yes! It was pretty disappointing. I have been considering rereading The Lost Years of Merlin by TA Barron which was probably my introduction to high fantasy when I was about 11 so it was once an absolute favorite. I am scared to reread it though because i dont want it ruined in my memory

Oh damn, 11 years old!? My suggestion.... don't. xD I mean, cmon! it's been 15 years!! Let your good memory stay the way it is! :D

Jody Great review Petrick! Eragon is one of the books that got me started reading fantasy all those years ago. I completely agree that if I was reading it now for the first time it would not have the same effect. But it will always be one of my favorites simply because it helped me fall in love with reading.

Alexis Rogers-Esparcia I love this book! It's great for kids! I was just thinking my daughter is now old enough for it! It gets way more deep as the books continue :)

Thank you, Jody! Oh i didnt know this was the book for you too! I totally understand that feeling though, i'm a very late novels reader, Mistborn was the one that sparked my love for high fantasy novels xD

Petrik Alexis wrote: "I love this book! It's great for kids! I was just thinking my daughter is now old enough for it! It gets way more deep as the books continue :)"

I'm glad you love this book, Alexis! Make sure to read it to your daughter while she's young! Spark her love for reading since she's a kid! :)

Liam I loved it when I read it, but definitely for a younger crowd. This book got me reading fantasy too, because it's really designed to be entry level fantasy for those who have never experienced it before.

Rinaldo Totally. Back when I was a teenager, Eragon was read as one of the coolest thing ever. True name and old tongue magic system was a briliant novelty for me at that time. As I grew up, I read the later installations and I started to see the cracks and flaws. Looking back now, it does read as entertaining but tropey series at very least.

Travis Great Review! I totally see where your coming from. I don't know how I would feel if I read these for the first time in the present! But since I did read these when I was still a tween they have a special place in my heart!

Jenna Kathleen Great review! I remember enjoying it as a kid, like many people in the comments. I agree that reading this as an adult would not be that great which is why it's not on my list of books to re-read.

I can totally understand that. Just like Harry Potter with a lot of people, the nostalgic love is immense! :D Yeah, unfortunately reading this as an adult who has read a lot of books in the genre really soured the experience! :/

Thank you, Jenna! Yeah, that's the sad truth :/ I can totally see why this book is so beloved by many though! :)

Ჹïڲ Fantastic review, Petrik! You said it all.
I was one of those readers whose interest for reading Fantasy has been sparked by this series, and for that, it will always have a special place in my heart! :)

I won't lie, I'm actually super surprised by how many people in my friend list that had their love for fantasy sparked by this book. But hey... mine is Mistborn.. that's even further apart xD
