The Written Review

ah. i
finally understand.

it's not the words
that matter,
but the spaces
between.

-a slightly sarcastic review -

I'm not normally a poetry person and this book did nothing to convince me otherwise.

This whole book felt like those instagram quotes minus the inspirational photograph. Does that even count?

I admit I'm no expert, but the words seemed more poetical than poem. Like the author took a really pretty sentence and then hit enter a lot.

Also, maybe I'm a hypocrite here (just based on the sheer amount of books in my house) but I kind of felt bad for all the unused page space in this book.

There's barely a handful of words per page and just vast amounts of white paper. It just felt a bit wasteful.

Overall - it was...an experience. Not the best experience, but an experience nonetheless.

- a final poem -

the above review
was far more
sarcastic than my
earlier poem.

but this one
is more vulgar.
poop.

Ammar I totally agree with you Miranda

miuccia rupi kaur's way too tumblr for poetry

Cassandra Totally agree, not my favorite.

Ahmed El-Sharawy Yup easily one of the worst lit i have ever read

message 5: by mj (new)

mj I don't think one person can decide what is or isn't poetry, e.g. you can't tell someone that their writing ISN'T poetry, but Kaur's poetry is a sad imitation of Nayyirah Waheed, occasionally a direct rip off from her writing. When she isn't taking directly from Waheed, it's a shadow's shadow of stolen talent. An incredibly derivative work that never should have gotten as big as it did.

Julie G Miranda,
Don't give up on poetry. Every person who proclaims poetry isn't their thing just hasn't found their poet yet! I've got a "wax poetic" shelf on my profile page, of reviewed poetry, if you ever want inspiration.
xoxo

yupppp

It did have a bit of a journal feel to it... good point

Never heard of the other person either, but I trust you on this :P

honestly, thank you. Poetry is always something that I've wanted to like but I just cannot find any that work for me. I think I was ruined by high school where it took about an hour to analyze a single line. I just hated how long it took to read.

Daniela Lange I feel like Rupi Kaur's poetry isn't "real" poetry (I know that poetry is a wide spectre) but it feels more like some of her thoughts written down and made to sound nice. I don't like the imagery and that she doesn't quite play enough with words and punctuation, which is what makes poetry fun to mee

message 15: by sarah (new)

sarah I actually really like her work WHENEVER I feel somehow the same, in that case it somehow really hits home because it puts something a feel in a few simple words and yes.. a lot of white pages. I like her poetry personally but I fully understand you. I'm currently rereading "the sun and her flowers" and I'm a bit confused about why exactly I have been so hyped about Rupi Kaur just 2 years ago.

Meghan Kalendek You are totally correct. Random spaces don't make a poem. And this is barely poetry. I studied a lot of poetry in college and after, trust me when I say you're spot on. Give someone like Mary Oliver a go!

message 17: by Eric (new)

Eric Plume Great review, Miranda...made me laugh, always good!

And I agree that Kaur's poetry is not that hot. The style being used is one where, unless the author reeeeeeeealllly knows what they're about it sounds pretentious and trite.

I'm also not a huge fan of most poetry, but one I do like is Alfred Noyes' The Highwayman. I think its in the public domain, and since it actually tells a story you might like it.

That could be it. Just wasn't in the right head space

Any suggestions on where to go with Mary?

joi. would totally read a book of your poetry, just fyi.

Just read it. Liked it a lot! I think it was the storyline that really hooked me - plus the way he ended each stanza with the little bit of repetition was cool :)

Thanks for the rec : )

Side note, are you thinking of publishing anything any time soon...? :D (i waaaaant more detective books!!)

Miranda Reads joi. wrote: "would totally read a book of your poetry, just fyi."

LOL I'll keep that in mind

Robin Bonne I can’t get over the plagiarism controversy.

message 26: by Jason (new) - rated it 1 star

Jason Kaur’s poetry is garbage. She is an absolute fraud, laughing all the way to the bank.

Ma This is simply the BEST review possible.

TMR Oh my...😂😂

message 30: by Ken (new)

Ken Five stars for the white space and one for what's defined as "poetry," then? The sarcasm is perfectly suited in this case!

message 31: by cat (new) - rated it 2 stars

cat Agreed!!! I’m not a person that usually reads poetry as well and this book didn’t make me want to start. I couldn’t even finish it because it felt like I was reading random poems from some 2015 tumblr account

Jessica (Ihaveseenthedragons) This review sums up my exact feelings about this book!

message 33: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca I love poetry and couldn't finish reading any of her books. I find most modern poetry lacking in style and substance. I started reading poetry by reading Shel Silverstein, Robert Frost, and Shakespeare's Sonnets.

message 34: by Mimi (new) - added it

Mimi Ah she is a performance artist first so her poems are most arresting read out loud by her

message 35: by Soha (new)

Soha I felt this way about Amanda Lovelace's "The Princess Saves Herself In This One".

Miranda Reads Jason wrote: "Kaur’s poetry is garbage. She is an absolute fraud, laughing all the way to the bank."

Hmmm...don't know enough to comment on that one.

I liked Shel Silverstein at least :)

Miranda Reads Mimi wrote: "Ah she is a performance artist first so her poems are most arresting read out loud by her"

Oooo...that's a good idea. I think I would be able to connect more if I could see her performing and get that emotional connection. Thank you :):)

Miranda Reads Soha wrote: "I felt this way about Amanda Lovelace's "The Princess Saves Herself In This One"."

Ohhh no! I wanted to read that one!!!

I recommend checking out Facebook poet "Not Rupi Kaur". They're feminist as well, deliciously intersectional, make funny parodies, but have actual nuggets of wisdom too

Eric Plume Miranda wrote: "Just read it. Liked it a lot! I think it was the storyline that really hooked me - plus the way he ended each stanza with the little bit of repetition was cool :)

Glad you enjoyed it! Its one of my favorite poems ever, because the language is so beautiful. I don't enjoy the ending to the story, but its still a great piece of poetry.

"Side note, are you thinking of publishing anything any time soon...? :D (i waaaaant more detective books!!) "

I'm working on a new Amber piece now, actually. Its a novella dealing with the events at the end of Hangman, specifically (view spoiler) I'm not sure about a release date, I guess "soon-ish".

Glad you enjoyed my first two...they've done pretty well, considering I never intended to publish the first one! :D

message 48: by Safa (new) - rated it 2 stars

Safa I gave it 2 stars. I was too generous.

Alexandra Elend Wolf Modern poetry is not for everyone. Certainly not for me.

message 50: by Tani (new) - rated it 1 star

Tani Lmao. You should definitely start writing poems, Miranda.

P. S. I hate this book.
