This is the sixth Fredrik Backman book I read. He’s become one of my favourite writers, so it’s always exciting to read something new from him.
Us Against You continues to delve into the lives of some of Beartown’s inhabitants. We are acquainted with many of them from his previous novel, Beartown (also known as Scandal in other countries).
Again, at the centre of this novel we have the Beartown Hockey Team manager Peter Andersson, his lawyer wife, Kira, their kids, Maya, 16 and Leo, 12. What happened to Maya in the past year still affects her, her family and, to a certain extent, the entire town. The only thing that makes Beartown tick is hockey, but they’re about to lose that as well. Many players had moved to the bigger neighbouring town, Hed. There’s conflict between the two towns stemming from hockey rivalry but also due to socio-economic issues. Add a sociopathic, master manipulator politician to the mix and we’ve got yourself an explosive mixture.
We reacquaint ourselves with some of the hockey players we met in Beartown : Benji, the excellent hockey player, who’s in the closet; Amat the immigrant, very talented player and his best friend, Bobo, hardworking, less talented but with a heart of gold. Benji gets more play time on the pages of this novel, I personally didn’t mind, as he was intriguing in so many ways. There are some new characters, who are given more or less air-time.
I loved the pacing of the book and how Backman kept adding layer, upon layer, upon layer, creating a tower of tension about to topple.
This is another ambitious novel that deals with trauma, parenting, friendship, small town mentalities, homophobia, sexism, and politics. Oh, and some hockey.
While I agree with every single message of the book, I did find this novel a bit too sanctimonious it pains me to say that, but that’s how I felt. Also, I would have preferred he’d dialled-down the melodrama. In saying all that, I adore the guy - Backman is a Renaissance man I don’t say that lightly.
As always, I cannot wait to see what he comes up with next. His writing is a treat I hope to indulge in for many years to come.
I’ve received this book via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to Atria Books allowing me to read this novel. I truly appreciate it.

Thanks. They're very good books, but I'm partial when it comes to Backman.

I know. 😁 I personally was annoyed with myself for noticing especially since I agree with all the messages and I love Backman for having those opinions.

I liked that Benji's story got more airtime. I hope you enjoy it as well.

I was very surprised that I had a critical thought. All his previous books had been 5- star reads. This one is more like 4-4.5, still, a great novel.

Thank you so much, Angela. I wouldn't mind another book set in Beartown. I would love to hear more about the female coach - she was a cracker, Reemus, the martial arts teacher etc.
As for Backman, he's an evolved man. He knows about feelings. Everyone's. I can't remember ever reading a novel with so many men crying. I love how he sees the best in people.

Thanks so much. I can't wait to find out what you think of it.

Thank you so much, Toni. All Backman's books are highly quotable, aren't they? I love that. But I appreciate the most his humanity and kindness that transpire in every book.

You can still read this one without having read Beartown. Try the library, Beartown may be found as Scandal. You'll have to wait for this one to be published in Australia.

Fair enough, Cheri. I usually skim if I know I'm going to read a certain book. I hope you enjoy it.

Hahaha, I understand, I feel the same about many of my GR friends who seem to find the greatest books. I almost feel like it's a good week if I add only five or fewer books to my TBR ... I wish I had narrower, more concentrated reading taste ... I do adore Backman, so I highly recommend his books.

You c..."
Thanks for the tip Bianca. My library does have it listed as Scandal so I've placed a reserve. Hopefully it'll come through soonish.

My pleasure. They should pay me a commission, I've made many people read Backman. :-)

Enjoy. It's a good one.

What??? You're going to see him? I'm sooo jealous! I'm expecting a detailed report. 😊 I've read all his translated work but the Christmas short story.

I know. I think I yelled WHAT out loud when I got an email about him coming. I will be sure to report back. I'm a junkie for going to hear authors speak. I'm going to see Lisa See Monday.
On his Christmas book....I saw so many less than stellar reviews on it I figured I would hold off. At least until the memory of those review is out of my mind.

I know. I think I yelled WHA..."
Me, too. I love going to the Perth Writers Fest and other events. I've been pestering the Festival to invite Backman, although I wasn't sure whether he did events - I'm under the impression he's not the type who enjoys the attention. I'm looking forward to hearing about the event (can you take photos, too? :-) )

Yeah, I thought the same. I think that's why I had an audible reaction to the news he was coming. I can take photos and I'll try to get you a good one. My city over the last few years really exploded with literary events and independent bookstores opening which is great. For years, I didn't think many in this area read. But they just announced their new season and I was so excited at the list. Plus the bookstores now bring authors in for talks.

It's wonderful that writers are becoming rock/ movie stars.

Thanks, Deanna. It hasn't veered away from Beartown, it may just be me. It's still such an engaging, well-rounded read, with plenty of good things to take away from.

Thanks, Susanne. I'm glad, too, I've come to expect it from Backman.
