really liked it

What a book! What a pageturner, just loved it.
Thoroughly good, 4 stars plus! Great crime read, loved by many here as I see it. Great characters all round and highly entertaining, keeps you on the end of your seat.
I think it is an unusual book to be longlisted for the Man Booker Prize, as I understand it, but I like it! So... recommended!

On a stifling summer's day, 11-year old Jack and his two little sisters sit in their broken-down car along the highway, waiting for their mum to come back and rescue them. 'Jack's in charge', she'd said. 'I won't be long'. But she doesn't come back. She never comes back. And life as the children know it is changes for ever. 3 years later, Jack is still in charge - of his sisters, of supporting them all, of making sure nobody knows they're alone in the house as their dad has left them, and - quite sudden - of finding out the truth about what happened to his mother. And then the police gets involved as well....

Annet Thanks Fran. I'm not a crime reader pur sang, do read some crime books, but this one stands out for its 'unusualness' and yes, edge of seat reading definitely! :-)

Kim Glad you enjoyed it Annet. If you haven't read any of her other books, try her first one Blacklands. She writes a great thriller!

Annet Thanks Kim, I will find Blacklands right away, intrigued!

Kim Blacklands is the first in a series called the Exmoor Trilogy - follow-on books are Darkside and Finders Keepers, the latter two featuring local policeman Jonas Holly who is a minor character in Blacklands. I'm sure you will enjoy them (and indeed her later books) - I've enjoyed all of them. Happy reading, Annet!!

Barbara I gave this 4 stars also but my rating was closer to 3.5. There were some flaws and still I feel people may have downgraded their ratings because they didn't believe it rated being on the Booker long list.

Paula K Excellent review Annet! I’m looking forward to reading this book.

Honestly, it is a bit of an unusual choice for the Booker list, but still, I enjoyed this one, fast entertaining read, quirky!

Marzena Strzalkowska I loved that book, especially because I live only 10km away from Tiverton where the action happens. Great one!
