Transcript of a conversation heard between Tomi Adeyemi and Marissa Meyer:
TOMI: Skies! I am so excited to meet you!
MARISSA: Stars, I know, right!
TOMI: Skies, yes!
MARISSA: Stars!
TOMI: Skies!
MARISSA: STARS, STARS!
TOMI: SKIES, SKIES, SKIES!
But, I digress . . .
I really enjoyed the first half of this book. It had some really cool character development and world building. And, it culminated in a really awesome and intense climactic scene.
Then . . . I dunno what happened.
The last half, for me, was just kinda blah. It really got repetitive with long, drawn out romance scenes. Additional action sequences did not match the intensity of the mid-book climax. The plot around magic started to get a bit confusing. I lost interest quickly and did not get a lot of enjoyment from it.
So, a strong first half and a mediocre second, I will settle on 3 stars (Marissa, is that you?)

Thanks, Melissa! Awesome to be in good company!😁
I did like the magic system and love how it was used in the mid-book conflict. But, that was (for me) the best the magic got. Kinda like the big firework was at 50% and then the remainder of the book was the rapidly dimming particles of the firework (I hope this analogy makes sense!)

Thanks, Virginia! I am glad you could work through the issues to still enjoy it at a 4 star level!😃

Always awesome to find another reader on the same page as me - especially when I am going against popular opinion. Yeah, just dunno why the fizzle . . .

I wish I could provide you stronger direction one way or another.

I do what I can! ;)

Well, 2/3 of it isn't romance, but it does get pretty heavy in the last 1/3. I don't mind some romance in my stories, but it just felt meh for me in this case.

HA! Yeah, I was wondering if I was just being too sensitive . . .

Even the ones we like aren't always completely perfect, right!?😉

You got that right!

I am definitely not the one to look to for motivation to finish the second half of this book! 😉

It's likely that I will. If see it is getting a lot of positive feedback, I may reconsider and give it another chance.

It is - happened to me with the most recent Veronica Roth series, too. I couldn't bring myself to m1ove on to the sequel.

And this is generally why I avoid overhyped books. The fans of said books tend to be IMO very dogmatic/slightly fanatical.

Definitely - but I do find a diamond in the rough every once in a while.

As I have gotten farther away from the time I read this one, I am thinking I am definitely done with any future releases. That happened to me with Veronica Roth's followup series to Divergent, too.

Yeah, that's interesting to know. I suspect that might happen to me, especially as other more interesting books enter my radar. There are too many great books out there to waste time forcing yourself through an okay book. But for now, I have a hold on the second book and when it comes in, we'll see how I feel at that point. I still have quite a bit of time before it's released, lol.

No problem, Jerry! I know how you feel!

Yup - too many books, too little time!

Ha! Always glad to permanently influence a fellow reader! Methinks if you had trouble getting into this one a few times, it is not likely to improve - regardless of my witty play.😁

Bail Sara, bail!

It definitely needs an improvement in direction if it is gonna get me back!

Ha! And this is why ŷ is the best! This comment is the best part of waking up!🤣🤣🤣

Yep, I have a copy of the second one from my library, but I'm waiting to see if it's worth reading, lol!
