Transcript of a conversation heard between Tomi Adeyemi and Marissa Meyer:

TOMI: Skies! I am so excited to meet you!

MARISSA: Stars, I know, right!

TOMI: Skies, yes!

MARISSA: Stars!

TOMI: Skies!

MARISSA: STARS, STARS!

TOMI: SKIES, SKIES, SKIES!

But, I digress . . .

I really enjoyed the first half of this book. It had some really cool character development and world building. And, it culminated in a really awesome and intense climactic scene.

Then . . . I dunno what happened.

The last half, for me, was just kinda blah. It really got repetitive with long, drawn out romance scenes. Additional action sequences did not match the intensity of the mid-book climax. The plot around magic started to get a bit confusing. I lost interest quickly and did not get a lot of enjoyment from it.

So, a strong first half and a mediocre second, I will settle on 3 stars (Marissa, is that you?)

Matthew After posting this last night, I am looking through other reviews today and it appears I am not following popular opinion!😬

Melissa Brown Skies, I love this review! I didn't love this book either so you're not alone. The instalove between 2 of the main characters killed it for me. The hate to love transition just happened why too fast for me with no really explanation. I did enjoy the magic system though & loved Amari.

Thanks, Melissa! Awesome to be in good company!😁

I did like the magic system and love how it was used in the mid-book conflict. But, that was (for me) the best the magic got. Kinda like the big firework was at 50% and then the remainder of the book was the rapidly dimming particles of the firework (I hope this analogy makes sense!)

Virginia Ronan ♥ Herondale ♥ I really liked your review Matthew because I was one of the few people who had issues with this book too! *lol* It's good to hear I'm not the only one! So thank you for that! =)

S.R. Harris I think we may have rated this one the same Matthew. I agree with you, I loved the first half of this book and then I don't know what happened but then it just became meh to me...

Thanks, Virginia! I am glad you could work through the issues to still enjoy it at a 4 star level!😃

Laura I still don't know if I should read this...

Jerry I'll pass based on your review Matthew, thanks for saving me time!

Always awesome to find another reader on the same page as me - especially when I am going against popular opinion. Yeah, just dunno why the fizzle . . .

Matthew Laura wrote: "I still don't know if I should read this..."

I wish I could provide you stronger direction one way or another.

Matthew Jerry wrote: "I'll pass based on your review Matthew, thanks for saving me time!"

I do what I can! ;)

Matthew Lucy wrote: "Okay I'm not a fan of romance so maybe I don't want to read this... Thanks Matthew!"

Well, 2/3 of it isn't romance, but it does get pretty heavy in the last 1/3. I don't mind some romance in my stories, but it just felt meh for me in this case.

Alondra Miller I actually had fun with this one, but got frustrated with a few items.... *cough*

Matthew Sara wrote: "I felt the same way! Our reviews on that point are very similar. If I heard "skies" one more time my head might have exploded!"

HA! Yeah, I was wondering if I was just being too sensitive . . .

Jade Fantastic review! Made me laugh :)

Even the ones we like aren't always completely perfect, right!?😉

Alisi ☆ wants to read too many books ☆ I feel the same. I've read the first half but have little desire to finish the second half. LOL

Matthew Jade wrote: "Fantastic review! Made me laugh :)"

I always hope to entertain!😃😃😃

You got that right!

I am definitely not the one to look to for motivation to finish the second half of this book! 😉

Enjoy when you get to it!😃

Sophie Are you skipping the sequel, then?

Matthew Sophie wrote: "Are you skipping the sequel, then?"

It's likely that I will. If see it is getting a lot of positive feedback, I may reconsider and give it another chance.

Sophie Same here! I was looking forward to the first book so that's a shame

Matthew Sophie wrote: "Same here! I was looking forward to the first book so that's a shame"

It is - happened to me with the most recent Veronica Roth series, too. I couldn't bring myself to m1ove on to the sequel.

And this is generally why I avoid overhyped books. The fans of said books tend to be IMO very dogmatic/slightly fanatical.

Definitely - but I do find a diamond in the rough every once in a while.

Eileen I totally wanted to love this book more than I ended up doing. I will likely give the second book a chance, but I basically had to force myself to finish this.

As I have gotten farther away from the time I read this one, I am thinking I am definitely done with any future releases. That happened to me with Veronica Roth's followup series to Divergent, too.

Yeah, that's interesting to know. I suspect that might happen to me, especially as other more interesting books enter my radar. There are too many great books out there to waste time forcing yourself through an okay book. But for now, I have a hold on the second book and when it comes in, we'll see how I feel at that point. I still have quite a bit of time before it's released, lol.

Jerry Thanks for the warning about this hyped book. (I don't force myself anymore. Too many books in the TBR pile!)

No problem, Jerry! I know how you feel!

Matthew Arline wrote: "I felt the same way! I had to stop reading bc it just wasn’t good anymore."

Yup - too many books, too little time!

Sara the Librarian Gah I picked this up and put it down like five times before giving up entirely. I still may try to find my way back to it at some point though after your little play up there I'm not sure I'll be able to take it seriously ;)

Matthew Sara wrote: "Gah I picked this up and put it down like five times before giving up entirely. I still may try to find my way back to it at some point though after your little play up there I'm not sure I'll be a..."

Ha! Always glad to permanently influence a fellow reader! Methinks if you had trouble getting into this one a few times, it is not likely to improve - regardless of my witty play.😁

gelowmichael Felt the same way. I hope Adeyemi will slightly lose that unsettling romance because Zelie was a strong character subdued by Inan. Inan should be dead in book 2, I might say.

Bail Sara, bail!

It definitely needs an improvement in direction if it is gonna get me back!

Yep, I have a copy of the second one from my library, but I'm waiting to see if it's worth reading, lol!

Matthew Amy wrote: "I dunno how you got through half of it..."

It was definitely a battle!

Matthew Eileen wrote: "Yep, I have a copy of the second one from my library, but I'm waiting to see if it's worth reading, lol"

The more I think about it, the more I realize that this was just a one and done series for me.
