2023: My deep sincere love for everything Murderbot shines as brightly as ever.

2021: Yup, I read this again. “Murderbot Diaries for me are just as important as “Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon is for Murderbot. ‘Nuff said.

I think I’ve listened to this novella at least6 or 7 9 or 10times now. I love Murderbot more and more each time. The narration by Kevin R. Free is perfect for how I envision MB’s inner voice. Best find of 2020 - so at least this godawful year had something good about it.

“It had been well over 35,000 hours or so since then, with still not much murdering, but probably, I don’t know, a little under 35,000 hours of movies, serials, books, plays, and music consumed. As a heartless killing machine, I was a terrible failure.I loved this so much that I can’t shake off a sneaky suspicion that somehow inexplicably it was custom-written just for me. It’s like someone hacked into my brain and saw what kind of story makes me tick. So I don’t know whether to be happy about it or slightly paranoid.
“I don't know what I want. I said that at some point, I think. But it isn't that, it's that I don't want anyone to tell me what I want, or to make decisions for me.Murderbot is what our narrator, a cyborg that secretly has hacked its ‘governor module this allowing it to go rogue and free from company commands, likes to call itself. Its current job is being a Security Unit to a bunch of surveyors on a remote and seemingly unremarkable planet - while spending most of its time secretly binge-watching space soap operas and convincing itself that it only cares about its current bunch of weird humans (who insist on treating it as a person, not a high-functioning security system) only as much as the job requires. While being a pessimistic introvert and a murderous sarcastic grumpy snarky secret softie all at the same time.
“I’m always supposed to speak respectfully to the clients, even when they’re about to accidentally commit suicide. The plot takes off immediately as is necessary in a novella-length story and speeds along without faltering, making it impossible to look away from the page. And what’s amazing is that the tight plot in a short book in no way sacrifices characterization which is solid.
“That can’t happen. I have too much to hide, and letting one piece go means the rest isn’t as protected. This book manages to be funny and serious and touching at once, and seems to do all that effortlessly. I inhaled it in one sitting and it immediately carved out a permanent spot in my heart. Instant book-love - how can you argue with that?
“Gurathin turned to me. "So you don't have a governor module, but we could punish you by looking at you."
I looked at him. "Probably, right up until I remember I have guns built into my arms.
5 stars.

Have you read Tanith Lee's Silver Metal Lover?"
I resisted it for a while for some reason, but once I got it as a freebie from Tor I caved in - and I’m glad I did.
I haven’t read Silver Metal Lover, I haven’t even heard of it. Is it good?

I’m glad to hear that. I just started book 2, and so far I love it. I need Murderbot as my new best friend: we can both hang out quietly, me reading, it watching its soap operas, introverting together.

I haven't read any of her non-Murderbot works, other than possibly an online short story or two. I'll have to keep an eye out for them.

I definitely plan to read more by Wells after I finish Murderbot stories. I see that Death of the Necromancer is the second book in a series. Does that series need to be read in order or are those basically standalones?

Thanks, Sarah! I hope you will enjoy this book as much as I did.

Yes! This is how I got the 4 Murderbot novellas. I guess it was a smart move - now they will be getting my $$ for the upcoming Murderbot novel.

I have not even heard of Martha Wells until these books. Unacceptable, I know! Now I plan to get well-acquainted with her writing.

I will definitely try to get a copy of that book. Sounds interesting.

I’m glad I helped you find a great book!

Thanks, Peter! I was surprised at how much I loved all the Murderbot books - all the novellas and the novel. It is just so good and an ultimate SF comfort read for me. I feel like I know them by heart now, after all the times I read and listened to them (they are my go-to books on my commute).
And - you are welcome. I’m happy when my ratings and reviews point people towards good books.

I totally agree with Peter above, I've NEVER been steered wrong by one of your reviews Nataliya! We must really have similar tastes in books because I've really loved everything I've read based on your recommendations!
I have to thank you for your review of Murderbot, your comments about it had stuck in my head since I'd read your review, and you totally helped me make a great choice for my next audiobook!
My Mom and I have started a routine of listening together, and we'd been on a roll with really great books. Recently we'd finished Song of Achilles and Circe and it was my turn to choose and I'm thinking... How can I top those!? Didn't want to ruin our streak! Ended up having a craving for sci fi, and Murderbot was on my wish list from when I'd read your review.
We listened to the sample, laughed a bunch, and immediately bought the 1st in the series. We finished that way quicker than we would usually because we kept listening to more than one chapter at a time... "just one more" haha.
The narrator is so awesome! I love how he voices Murderbot, it adds to the humour. (how can anyone think he's monotone I have no idea!?) and wow I we're continually impressed at how he pronounced all those names of the research team, talk about tongue twisters!
Anyways, all this to say we're now set for a while for what we will be listening to, I know what my next credits are going to be spent on!
So thanks for your part in our current fun with our audiobook listening! :)

I tot..."
I am so glad you and your mother liked this book! This series is certainly my favorite find this year, and just like you I really enjoy the narrator. I don’t see him as monotone; he does a measured narration that to me quite fits MB’s personality and narrative voice. I had a bunch of Audible credits piled up before I got the audiobooks (I’m quite choosy with those, and so I often have a bunch of unspent ones) and I was able to get them for a listening binge.
These books are so good! I really need to check out Martha Wells other books as I’m sure she’s is not a one-hit wonder.

Mine too. It’s like a therapy session that leaves me happier with life and humanity.

I plan to check it out. I loved “The Martian but was quite disappointed by “Artemis. I heard that in spirit it’s closer to the former than the latter, so I’m hopeful.

Oh, you definitely should! At least you’ll know what all the fuss is about :) It’s simple science fiction, but so comforting and humanistic.

Thanks! I really hope that you like this one as well.

I hope you’ll love it!

AssaSynth? Oh dear.

Yes, it’s ongoing with the plans for another book this year!

Oh, that’s wonderful :)

I am so glad you've joined the ranks of Murdebot fans, Steven! Once you start with these books, there is no going back -- and there is a new one coming out this year. And as for Kevin R. Free -- I hope there NEVER will be a Murderbot TV series or a movie because the voice will be wrong, since there is only one Murderbot and it's Mr. Free :)

YEA I really hope they don't, this just seems like a series everyone has their very specific headcannon for and nobody should touch that. I love his accents for all the characters too, I'm actually considering doing the rest of the seires as audiobook because its just...really soothing? I've never really done audiobooks so this is all too much fun haha.
And that is great. Is it a full length novel one again? I was just looking and Martha Wells seems to have some super intriguing fantasy novels as well, have you read any?

I’ve read one - City of Bones, and I have an ARC for Witch King.

I used to be wary of audiobooks, but after I tried a few good ones I got used to them and I often listen to them now. Fun on long drives and long walks. And I’ve listened to all the books in this series after I eyeball-read them, and it was so much fun.
