Ferrante’s story of Elena and Lila gets even more complicated in the second installment which was so much more evocative than My Brilliant Friend. The girls have now become young women in the 60’s and Elena continues to study while Lila’s struggles with her marriage persist. Their competitive natures spread to new depths. The writing is powerful, raw, emotional, intense and gritty and doesn’t apologize. Reading this I would shake my head in exasperation and unbelief many times. Some of the storylines are just painful to read. I definitely want to finish the series and find out what happens to these friends.

Lori, the same happened to me- At one point I just slammed by book down in utter exasperation, my head spinning only to be drawn back into their lives several hours later.
