Ferrante’s story of Elena and Lila gets even more complicated in the second installment which was so much more evocative than My Brilliant Friend. The girls have now become young women in the 60’s and Elena continues to study while Lila’s struggles with her marriage persist. Their competitive natures spread to new depths. The writing is powerful, raw, emotional, intense and gritty and doesn’t apologize. Reading this I would shake my head in exasperation and unbelief many times. Some of the storylines are just painful to read. I definitely want to finish the series and find out what happens to these friends.

Oh Angela, I am so jealous of you! This is one of my all-time favorite series and I can't wait to read them again someday. I do hope you enjoy them!

Oh goodness, Megan! Don’t you love it when a book can elicit such real emotional reactions? I am so happy you are enjoying this series so much!

Oh, Carmel, you cannot look away from the lives of these friends no matter how awful - just like that car wreck!

I have bought copies of all of these somI can read them again. This is such a fantastic series especially if you like character driven novels with lots of ugly life happening.

I can’t recommend this series enough, Jan and would concur with your friend. I do hope you pick these up some day. My heart aches for these girls every time I think about their stories. They will fill you with emotions -maybe some you don’t know about. So good!

This has got to be one of my favorite series. I now own all of them and am waiting for the right time to reread them.
