I plodded through this book to the end, and I now know more about bullfighting than I ever wanted to know. Killing animals for sport is not my idea of sport. Although the title is Mexico, and there is a skim of history included, there is not a whole lot until the second half of the book. The characters are well described, but I can't say I felt any affinity with any of them. Had Mr. Michener used an actual tribe and real events it would have been worth the exercise, but it's hard to tell where fiction ends and fact begins. There is a bit of racial prejudice as well, nobody wants to claim being Indian and not Spanish.

"Bullfighting isn't grisly enough, now we get front row seats at the Spanish Inquisition. What's your preference, strangle before being burned or burned alive?"

"The second half of the book focuses more on history and less on bullfights. I find this portion fascinating. He has built up the families and characters so that it takes on a special meaning and becomes more cohesive."
