Lots of good instruction on what not to do as regards alcohol, justice, sports obsession, and gossip. Also, good lessons on being who you truly are, and the pain that comes from hiding that in order to fit in or to become popular. Teen years are fraught with dangers, and parents try to do their best. Killing animals for sport is not my idea of sport. Although the title is Mexico, and there is a skim of history included, there is not a whole lot until the second half of the book. The characters are well described, but I can't say I felt any affinity with any of them. Had Mr. Michener used an actual tribe and real events it would have been worth the exercise, but it's hard to tell where fiction ends and fact begins. There is a bit of racial prejudice as well, nobody wants to claim being Indian and not Spanish....more
