it was amazing

I sat down to read a little of this during lunch, and ended up sitting in the restaurant for an hour after I was done eating. Eventually I felt guilty and left, but my plans were shot for the afternoon, as all I could think about was finishing this book.

I wish there were some mechanism on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ to occasionally give a book more than five stars. Something to indicate when you think a book is more than merely excellent. Like for every 100 books you review, you earn the right to give one six-star review.

If such a mechanism were in place, I'd use my six-star review on this graphic novel. It was lovely and clear. It had a strong emotional impact, without being sugary or uncomfortable. It was eye-opening without being preachy or didactic. I read the whole thing in less than three hours, and I can honestly say I am better for the experience.

Mike Thicke Your average rating is 4.83 stars! You're like the teacher who gives everyone 95% on their assignments and then has to give someone 110% when they actually do something well.

Tanja I read this too not long ago and it shocked me into tears. The brutality was so elegantly put in there, it slips up on you and really makes you understand how it must have been to grow up in that world and bear witness to the torture and horror of the regime.

Amanda I read this in a day! It's so fantastic. The film adaptation is quite beautiful too...

Hari What Mike said. You should to be more stingy with your stars!

Abraham Check out HABIBI by CRAIG THOMPSON

message 6: by Chips (new)

Chips O'Toole I've taught this work several times, and I've never come across a student who didn't take something from it. A great work!

Patrick You know what I love? When people tell me how I should do things. Like how I should review books on my own goodreads profile. That's awesome.

message 8: by Pngnlove (new)

Pngnlove Crazy thought, but maybe he is only posting reviews of books he likes. Seeing as the people Mr. Rothfuss is reviewing are his fellow authors he may not wish to post negative reviews on a public forum.

message 9: by Daniel (new)

Daniel hehe, and from now on nobody will dare speak their minds against you. Just saying.

message 10: by Amber (new)

Amber With the way Pat reads, it would probably take up way to much time to review all the books he didnt like or thought were just mediocre. I dont see anyone else with a goal of 250 books this year. I'm just glad to get a few suggestions from him here and there, which is a lot more than most authors on this website.

message 11: by Ann (new)

Ann Doesn't surprise me. I only pick up books I think I would like. And it's not entirely difficult to judge before reading them. Gut feeling is usually not far off! A 2 star book in my standard has very rare chance to be put on my own shelf!

message 12: by Phil (new)

Phil I give up on books that I don't like so they never get a review for what it's worth.

message 13: by Tyson (new)

Tyson I know Anne Rice, for instance, has stated she'll only post reviews on books she rates 5 stars and recommends completely over on Amazon. It makes sense when you're a public figure not to trash other writer's works. And even a thoughtful 2 star review can be taken as "trashing" by someone.
As for 6 star reviews, that's why I started my Favorites shelf.

Misha I'm with Patrick--why is he being held to a different standard than any other reader? Looks to me like he doesn't waste time reading books he doesn't like, which makes perfect sense to me.

Kim Currently reading Persepolis for a class and I couldn't agree more. It is absolutely wonderful and her humorous narrative makes it impossible to put down once you've started.

Angela Oliver This is why I tend to give low stars - because then I can truly mark the stories that really stand out to me. Although Patrick, you have convinced me that I should read this book. And I don't normally do graphic novels.

Angela Oliver Brookanna wrote: "I think people would be more accepting (or at least less judgmental) of the graphic novel as a medium if they started with something like Persepolis."

It's not that I am anti-graphic novels - I do regard them as literature - I just find them harder to read than text based books.

Sarah Or start with Francois Schuiten, he is a genius. He also did the art work for Golden Compass, and, more importantly, Mr Nobody, which was divine (the artwork that is).

I don't know if he translates well to English, as it's French originally, although I read them in Dutch. But before Schuiten, I was not interested in graphic novels at all. I don't love him for the story as much as I do for his art. His dark cities series is just mind-blowingly beautiful. Umberto Eco actually inspired me to read Schuiten as he named Schuiten one of the artists that convinced the world that graphic novels were literature too.

Might be a bit offtopic all of this, but I just wanted to gush about Francois Schuiten :D

message 19: by Angela (new)

Angela Oliver I'm reading it now, it's very engrossing! Sad though :(

message 20: by Marsha (new)

Marsha If Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ had a six-star system for reviews, someone would wish they could have a seven-star one. You might try going to Bookcrossing.com. They have a one- to ten-star system and that’s good enough for most purposes.

Ellie Lee Couldn't have put it better myself!

<3 it lol

message 23: by PJ (new) - rated it 3 stars

PJ There is a 6 star rating. It's called favorites shelf.

Andrea Totally agree! Persepolis deserves a constellation. Awesome book And story. It mades me smile And cry at same time. One of the Best books I've read

Christina Yes absolutely, I am better for having read the book, more aware, more empathetic, and more motivated to be bold and inquisitive and appreciative of life. Also set aside an entire afternoon for a story like this.

message 26: by Kristen Urbanec (new)

Kristen Urbanec I NEVER WOULD HAVE READ THIS. Without book club. I think the presentation is as much as or more than an equal character to her*.

message 27: by L (new) - rated it 5 stars

L I usually rate a book based on how much a book has inspired me, if it made me laugh, if it made me cry, if it moved my whole world, if the book is finished and I want the characters to be real, that book will take the Best score Regardless if it is juvenile literature or a classic book. I do not see why one has to be more strict if in the end it is what you felt.

Ilana (illi69) My mechanism is I only give 5 stars to books that are truly exceptional. All the rest get 4 or 4.5 stars. I'm just very very very choosy about which books I give 5 stars to, and I say so right on my bio. If everyone else hands out 5 stars willy-nilly, that's their problem for having a lack of discernment, not mine.

message 29: by Jose (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jose G. P. Totally agree. This is one of the only books that I have enjoyed this much. It really changes your perspective and shows you another story of someone that is growing up like any one of us did.

message 30: by Jenn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jenn I love this review! I get the same way
