2.5 trying too hard stars
A house, a desolate location, and a frantic call for help leads Noemí Taboada, to the Mexican countryside and into the path of something quite sinister, quite devious, quite malevolent and frightening. Heeding a frantic letter from her cousin, Noemi heads to High Place, a home secluded in the Mexican countryside. There she meets some very strange, disquieting and ominous people, the husband of her cousin, his brother, and a cast of spooky characters that will drive Noemi into a world that she never thought could have existed. There are secrets here, vast secrets that will lead Noemi into darkness, perverse and threatening situations. What is it about the house and its dreadful occupants and the connection to mushrooms and dreams that has awakened in Noemi a deep fear and a sense of foreboding?
This book definitely had the creepy factor charged up into overload and while I do like some creepy, I found this story went into overload and I found it was trying too hard to be sinister. Perhaps there was just too much crammed into its pages and while it had a slow prodding start the end of the book went like gangbusters. Phew! it was exhausting as the story went from zero to 100 in a space of a chapter.
I appreciated the concept, after all, creepy houses and its occupants are a real sell in the spooky department. However, this book, try as it did, became a tad too much, a tad too silly, and a tad too ridiculous.
So, sadly, no recommendation for this one from this reader and into the wish I had liked it more file it goes!

Thanks, Michael! I think you can push this one down lower on your TBR.
