The Inheritance Games (The Inheritance Games, #1)

Ever since I heard this book was supposed to be like Knives Out, I was super interested, since that's one of my favorite movies of all time for its brilliant plotting, complex characters, sympathetic protagonist, and brilliant satire about class stratification in the U.S. Obviously with a comparison like that, a book has huge boots to fill and sadly, I'm not sure THE INHERITANCE GAMES can really hack it. If anything, it's more like a modern, reverse-harem version of THE WESTING GAME, but since that book is older (from the 1970s) and more obscure, I guess such a comparison won't sell as many copies.
Avery is a poor teenager who lives with her older sister who is constantly in this off again, on again thing with an abusive boyfriend. One day, she finds out she's become the heiress to one of the nine biggest fortunes in the world-- even though she's pretty sure she has no relation to the eccentric billionaire. So why her? That's what everyone else in the family would like to know, too.
I really forced myself to keep reading because I thought the beginning was really interesting, but I quickly began to get bored, as you can see from . The romance felt forced and I wasn't as amazed by the "puzzles" as my friends seem to be, and I thought the "twist" at the end was hugely anticlimactic and disappointing. I really don't care about any of these characters and I don't think I'll be reading the sequel. Younger readers will probably enjoy this but I couldn't suspend my disbelief.

Oh my God yes. I'm so excited. Is it weird that I thought the bad guy was kind of hot?? Lol

I think this was his first evil role so it was a fun change."
I don't know what it is about villains, but when I find out there's a hot bad guy, my engagement in the storyline increases 1000%.

That's great!"
Accidentally sent it to my friend's address cause I forgot to change addresses when I sent him his birthday present 🎁 haha so gonna get that from him (he's gonna leave it on the welcome mat)

More cleverly plotted locked room mysteries in 2021 👏

I heard they're making a sequel to Knives Out, FYI!"
Oooh 🤩🤩🤩🤩
I wonder what they'll do, i bought the DVD during lockdown cos I'm old skool like that...might finally stop reading & watch it now to see if I can guess what might be happen in a sequel 🧐 (<- my attempt at a sherlock emoji 😅)

My hopes and expectations are sooooo high lol.
Have you seen Ready Or Not? Similar vibes.

I have not, shall have to look it up!

@Aoife Ready or Not was really great too. I had a blast watching it. Plus I mean Adam Brody's in the movie so A+.

Me too! I've been thinking of renting it and re-watching it. I loved it so much.

May i humbly submit an application for consideration?

YES! The love triangle was definitely something I took issue with. I LOVE romance but I hate when it's just thrown in haphazardly for drama.

Aww, I just saw this! Luckily I managed to find a copy on sale. :)

May i humbly submit an application for consideration?"
AWWW I WISH I SAW THIS EARLIER! I would have loved to have BR-ed with you! We should definitely read something else together!!!

Prob for the best as this wasn't quite what we were pitched 😉
Our time will come 🥰
Sorry this wasn't what you'd hoped for 😕

I can totally see that! I think I probably would have enjoyed it when I was younger. Even though the characters are older, it definitely has a younger teen vibe, which I think is kind of cool because like you said, it does feel like it was written with teens in mind.

OH MY GOD YOU'VE READ THE WESTING GAME????
Did you read Figgs and Phantoms by the same author? Those were my JAM as a kid. <3
Haha they totally should have done that! I think the Knives Out comparison sets it up to fail because Christopher Plummer and Chris Evans are bae.

i actually haven't read Figgs and Phantoms but i think i have to because that is a truly great title.
OMG YES. Chris Evans and that whole twist was amazing because we as an audience are almost trained to see him as a "good guy". and yeah Christopher Plummer is bae LOL he'll always be the guy from The Sound of Music to me.

YES. Although (view spoiler)

Hahaha I mostly read positive reviews too! Maybe I was expecting too much? XD
I hope you love it!

Hahaha ..."
Maybe or the book simply isn't very good for you more like it 😂

it was just a rumor someone told me but GOD I HOPE IT'S TRUE

Any ideas? 😆

So I just Googled and it seems like Lionsgate has not officially announced a sequel but people are wildly speculating that it would make sense given the success of the first film and that Craig is finishing up the James Bond franchise (I think this upcoming one will be his last time as Bond).
I really hope they do! I just know it'll be amazing.

PS - I think I have also heard that Daniel no longer wishes to play Bond 😎

He's been doing it for almost ten years now I think! I bet he'd like a new role. :)

Oh my GOSH YES. It was so good. Such a fun, clever, touching, horrifying movie. Seeing it in theaters was such an experience.
Have you seen the movie Murder by Death?? It's got a young Maggie Smith in it! Similar vibes but with 70s cheesiness. If you love murder mystery parodies, you'll adore it.

Thank you! I hope the next book blows your mind in a good way. If you haven't read it and don't mind a few antiquated stereotypes in older books, I'd recommend THE WESTING GAME. It's more in line with what I expected from this book.
