A rollicking urban fantasy through the dark underbelly of London Below which you never knew existed, where rats chat, and portals to other dimensions exist. Gives a bit of Alice in Wonderland or Wizard of Oz, but with a serious case of urban decay.
A reluctant hero named Richard and his ordinary existence clashes hilariously with the fantastical extraordinary chaos of London Below. His privilege serves as a stark contrast to the dispossessed and misfits he encounters along the way, shining a light on themes of class, power, and identity.
I didn't connect with Richard that much, and sometimes he irked me, but I was charmed by some of the other characters, such as The Marquis de Carabas and Old Bailey.
An enjoyable read.

I tend to have trouble with Gaiman’s writing, but the Alice in Wonderland vibes make me want to give this a try. Glad you enjoyed this and wonderful review! 😁

Have you tried the short story - How the Marquis Got His Coat Back? It offers a fun backstory to the character. :)

Thanks Marquise! Do you know this is the only Gaiman book I've ever read in my life? I'll stalk your reviews to find which ones you think are the hits so I can keep them in mind. And as always, I look forward to your thoughts no matter which end of the spectrum they lie. 😉🤍

Thank you so much my beautiful Cara! 💞😘

Thanks so much, Darla. And right, how fun is it to say? 🥰

I so get what you mean based on my experience with this book, Ivana my love!! It was fun, but it's made me think I'm not sure if I will ever get a BIG win from this author? But then again, this is the only book I've ever tried LOL. I'll stalk your reviews to see what you reckon about his other stuff. Lyvmt my sweet ray of golden sunshine. 💗💝🌷🌺💫🐙

Aw thanks, grey! You're the third friend who has said Gaiman sometimes doesn't work for them, he seems to be a real hit-or-miss. I'm gonna stalk your reviews to see your thoughts on his other stuff. This one was entertaining enough, but check out some other reviews, some people LOVED it, and some were bored by it and I'm a bit of an in-betweener 😁 I look forward to your thoughts if you get to it, my friend! 🤍

Thanks so much, Rosh! I'm so delighted you enjoyed this world and characters too and I see your 5 stars! 🤩 I did read "How the Marquis Got His Coat Back"! My memory has faded though so perhaps a re-read is in order 🤍🧥

Thanks so much Thibault! I'm hearing a lot of mixed reviews with Gaiman. I totally get why his style might not be for all. This is the one and only of his I've read, I don't feel super compelled to try more of his stuff if this is his best, if ykwim! 😊🤭

Better charmed late than never 😁 Thanks so much, my dearest Debbie. 🤍🤍

Thanks a bunch, Coco! There were many other interesting characters to make up for Richard thankfully. So curious to know your thoughts if you read it. 🥰

Thanks so much for your kind words Dale. 🥰

We're so in sync for this one A Mac, glad you enjoyed it too! Thanks a bunch. 💐

Thanks so much for your kind words, dear Nika! I'm glad you somewhat enjoyed The Ocean at the End of the Lane. I was wondering if I should give that particular one a try, so I'll check out your review. 🤍

Thanks so much for your sweet words, Carol! 💗

Thanks so much, Isabel! It was fun. 🤍

It did Marquise! A couple of gripes but I was mostly entertained. There are a lot of mixed reviews though. Love to know your thoughts if you give Gaiman another go. 🤍
