A rollicking urban fantasy through the dark underbelly of London Below which you never knew existed, where rats chat, and portals to other dimensions exist. Gives a bit of Alice in Wonderland or Wizard of Oz, but with a serious case of urban decay.
A reluctant hero named Richard and his ordinary existence clashes hilariously with the fantastical extraordinary chaos of London Below. His privilege serves as a stark contrast to the dispossessed and misfits he encounters along the way, shining a light on themes of class, power, and identity.
I didn't connect with Richard that much, and sometimes he irked me, but I was charmed by some of the other characters, such as The Marquis de Carabas and Old Bailey.

Lovely review, Esta! Gaiman is a hit or miss author for me, when I've loved his books, I've loved them to bits, and when not . . . well, hehehe. ;) Happy to hear this one might have potential for being a hit for me as well, I'll keep this in mind.

Haven't read a lot of Neil Gaiman. Just a short story and Good Omes, which he wrote with Terry Pratchett. But for some reason his writing style just never managed to grab me. Glad you had fun though. And The Marquis de Carabas is of course a brilliant character, glad he's done justice here. Good review, Esta.

You're the third friend who has said Gaiman sometimes doesn't work for them, he seems to be a real hit-or-miss. I'm gonna stalk your reviews to see your thoughts on his other stuff. This is the one and only of his I've read, I don't feel super compelled to try more of his stuff if this is his best, if ykwim! 😊🤭
