really liked it

Had Shakespeare not been blessed with his oratorical skills, he would have hired Maggie O'Farrell to write his plays.
The third person narration in this story certainly gave me the feeling of being back at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival theater in Ontario and as usual, her way with words had me quite mesmerized and in love with this, just not quite as ardently as those gone before.
On the minor scale, am I the only one who would have liked to go into this completely blind without knowing that (view spoiler) But then how to market the book? I would have read it on the strength of author reputation, just like those wine labels that tell me my wallet is bottomless.
On the major to minor scale, the tone never varied from its tragic ode to the play for which it is named and heavy narration over dialog leached it of some passion I was craving.
Nonetheless, I firmly believe the Bard would have been first in line for playrights.

Dem This is up next for me and so looking forward to it. Great review.

Candi Great review, Cathrine! You've expressed perfectly one of my own little 'complaints' about the novel when you stated "heavy narration over dialog leached it of some passion I was craving." Also, re: your spoiler - yes! I agree :)

Diane Barnes I'm one of the few people for whom this was a first book by Maggie O'Farrell. I loved everything about it and was totally invested in that world. If her others are better, then I really need to get to them.

I saw that Candi. It is challenging to voice what kept that 5th star from appearing, but a small issue overall.

Thanks Dem, looking forward to your thoughts.

Perhaps not better; we all salt our food to taste, so who knows? For you it could be your favorite. I still think if I read, rather than listened to I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death, it might have been 5 stars. It's one I plan to revisit in hard-copy one of these days.

Libby Wonderful review, Cathrine. I love your play on words, 'playrights.' I hope to read this one.

Canadian Jen ah, stratford the great theatre. I'm not a fan of shakespeare but given the reviews of this author, I think I need to check her out. Ontario misses you, Cathrine!

Cathrine ☯️ At some point, I plan to come back J :)

Alexandra Such an interesting point about the spoiler given in the books description... I do think marketing would have been tough without it. Without saying what the story is about, I think it may have seemed to be more Shakespeare oriented.

It's a tough call Alexandra, but perhaps it could have said 'about the death of one of Shakespeare's children during the Plague? Still, I enjoyed it immensely.
