it was amazing

This book literally unmasks a horrible beast. Wilkerson lays EVERYTHING out to explain the insidious and cancerous caste system upon which our country (US) was built and still functions. She compares and contrasts it to the well-known caste system in India, where the caste of Untouchables are the equivalent of black people in America. She also explores the caste system in Nazi Germany, where Jews were the Untouchables.

There is literally so much in this exceptional book that I cannot come close to summarizing it in a review, so I will say this: if you are a white person, I strongly urge you to read this. People of color are already acutely aware of this caste system's existence, but white persons, as a whole, are woefully ignorant and/or dismissive of such a fact.

It's especially important to read this before the Presidential election in November.

Libby I agree wholeheartedly with everything in your review. When I was in high school, I was shocked when I learned what happened during the Holocaust, but remember thinking it couldn't happen to good people. Even though I knew the history of slavery, it felt removed, far away. It was pages in a book that didn't bring home the tragedies, the sorrows, the awful lingering problems and dehumanization that continue to this day. Like you say, Pam, Wilkerson lays it all out. Great review about such an important book!

Yun Great review, Pam! I totally agree. This book was stunning in what it covered and uncovered about the racial structure of this country. It filled in all the holes in my understanding. Absolutely an amazing book!
